In junior high I snuck in to the room of my friend's older brother and found A Go Go in his cd player. Listened to the first track, stole the cd. I have been hooked on scofield ever since. Looks like crime does pay.

I had the opportunity to see Scofield in Sweden a while ago. Probably the best concert I've ever been to. Small village too. It turned out the guy who booked him helped Scofield out in a situation he had in Stockholm some years ago. Scofield's luggage (guitars, amps, pedals etc) got lost at the airport and this guy (living some 600 km south of Stockholm) was a big fan of Scofields music and had an exact setup of his gear. He drove up to Sthlm and lend him his gear. As a return favor he played ..

Scofield's soloing has such incredible depth, and the energy from the musical synthesis among the 3 is so palpable, it makes you go into high.

The Scho man is a revolutionary. He slaps mainstream music in the face and dares to redefine all genres that pigeonhole what is "normal" in the world of music. I saw this guy at the 2009 Jazzfest in NOLA; what a fucking show! I missed out on a lot of great playing over the years, but not anymore.

Sco takes me places. I can't account for all the sounds that come off his fingerboard from watching him. He's like a magician. His tone is an acquired taste, but his feel is something very special. There is no other guitarist I'd rather emulate.

I couldn't disagree more. Everything he plays is completely conscious and intentional. It takes a sophisticated ear to appreciate Sco thoroughly.
@johnielsen0817 жыл бұрын
there is a "Like the Moon" tease in here (or at least an extremely similar riff). That song is from the JSB disc "Up All Night." Listen at around 1:50ish. It sounds a lot like the intro to that song.
@ShablulZoem14 жыл бұрын
@firedancerart still, this is refreshing. Scofield plays this style well even without an organ backing him up, his sound his so full it sounds more than a trio... It's nice there's more than one version for this number.
@TLPnega14 жыл бұрын
even his voice has mad effects.

I like his comping with intervals and three note chords more than his single note lines...but they're great as well.

Been thinking about the Metheny vs Scofield thing lately. Everybody seems to bring it up. It comes down to what you like to hear. Honestly, they are both equally world class players, but Scofield makes me want to listen, think AND dance, where Metheny makes me want to go to sleep.

His playing is right on the edge of what's comfortable- I love it, but I understand how non-musicians would be thinking "what the hell is this guy playing?"
@disgruntleddave16 жыл бұрын
At first the tone strikes as a bit abrasive, but that quickly passes if you listen to it all rather than just his tone. Wonderful groove going on here with that bit of atonality that just blends so wonderfully with the groove. I quite like the harmonic style here over some of the other scofield stuff I've heard.

@egyptianminor13 жыл бұрын
@egyptianminor I meant Abm7, since he plays Dorian based lines over it, implying this chord is a ii degree mode, hence from Gb Major/Ionian- I chord, hence more appropriate to refer to the G#m7 as Abm7
@QuistJam13 жыл бұрын

@pfarnac1 She is entranced and hypnotized by the music. We can see what she's doing...but she doesn't know what she is doing or where she is. She is blinded by the music and is in Heaven.

He just switched to electric in the 60's or 70's (I forget which) and stuck with it. He's always been using a pick on the electric.

i like my drummers like my surfboard shapers--named bill stewart. shredding occurs either way. i'll never forget the first time i saw stew play with sco. it was in pasadena in '89 (i think, maybe '90?), and stew had just joined the band as this fresh-face youngster. ripping!

awesome tune. changed it a lot compared to the album. go scofield. you guys need to hear the remake of The House On The Rising Sun he did in his last album This Meets That.
@mturbevi17 жыл бұрын
swing...feeling. who cares. it is scofield and he is great.
@disgruntleddave16 жыл бұрын
Swing is often a term thrown around to mean more than just the traditional meaning (ie, long-short eights). In this case it is referring more to the rhythm in terms of the groove, the accents, etc. Instead of implying that the music is 'swung', it is simply swing'n, in the same way it's kickin', grooving, or another adjective that suits your fancy.
@MY599FERRARI16 жыл бұрын
So you want Scofield to sound like all the other players? All great players you mentioned for sure! I personally like and appreciate John's sound ......Very distinct 'John Scofield sound'...not cookie cutter playing.
@frizzzzzzal14 жыл бұрын
@Holycrap27 i'm sure he was trying to make that sounds. Scofield is amazing.

@fourfinger451 Well, as a matter of fact, I do. But thanks for your initial posting of the pitches (I hope that's the correct term in English - what I mean are the references to the parent scale in Roman numerals).
@gupta7615 жыл бұрын
Great video! Thanks for sharing this... Eh? Are those feedback noises? I never thought an ibanez of that class still prone to this kind of feedback! Nevertheless, sco handled that reallly well!!!
@ShaneBluesRI12 жыл бұрын
I couldnt agree more.Saying that theory takes away from creativity is like saying the best carpenters only use a hammer.Not to say there arent naturals who didnt study theory and still play well but with todays wealth of musical knowledge why not look at it?
@DrummerInExile16 жыл бұрын
shreddin from bill stewart...absolutely amazing./.... anyone know what kit/cymbals hes using? preferably cymbals :D
@eniltonbs16 жыл бұрын
I like it very much. The bass and drums line sounds a little bit like Samba or Bossa Nova to me. Very nice.
@egyptianminor13 жыл бұрын
A: G#m7 / G#m6 (G#m Dorian/Mel.minor) B: E7/9/13(+11) (E Myxo/Lyd.b7) C#m7 F#7 (C# Dorian-ii/V in B Maj) A 4-3 or G/A (A Myxo/G Lyd.),but @ 1:32 he plays A7+11(A Lyd.dom)or E Mel.minor, since it resolves back to G#m.
@mrsdalloway8412 жыл бұрын
is this available on any record i can buy in a store? since it was recorded live, i assume there's some kind of john scofield trio live at blue note CD or sth..?
@artestra15 жыл бұрын
I think that phantom 'wooooo' feedback adds to his overall character and when he rakes that arpeggio 1:49 it creeps in as if its answering his phrase, Scofield wins
@mrtyreus015 жыл бұрын
that's sco's sound. he uses distortion, and the bridge pickup.

@tiluriso15 жыл бұрын
It's a semi-hollow, so if your drive is on, your aamp is tilted in a certain way and you're too close to it (as it seems to be the case for Sco here) you should expect some feedback...By the way, where's Part 4 of this DVD?
@shoegazer66615 жыл бұрын
is there something wrong with the sound? is anyone else having the problem where the guitar sound is crackly?
