Scofield gets my attention and keeps it more than 99% of guitarists out there. One of the best ever.

Hes a gift that keeps on giving whenever he gets too rocky and pentatonic-y i come back to his more dissonant stuff to scratch that itch

Bill defies the odds playing match grip I feel. Though it's not all that orthodox for jazz, Bill Stewart makes it work. And inspired me to play more swing time match grip going against what my greatest teacher taught me.

I love how distinctive and rough Sco's playing is. You can tell it's real improvising, he's flying from the seat of his pants! Some of those lines are pure filth! Woo

@@triggSerable It's interesting, I started on drums but have a hard time discerning different drummers just on sound and playing style. I think it's the TONE that Swallow and Scofield get out of their hands/instruments, also note choices. I will say, Stewart's kick drum sound and playing is distinctive. I think it might just be a little beyond my ear. Regardless, I love jazz/funk, and love that the artform is still developing in other, newer forms. (Jacob Collier, Thundercat, Vulfpeck) ...I understand these aren't jazz, but are definitely influenced and carry on more complex musical arrangements using jazz chords and awesome funkiness!

I often feel that if Hendrix could've lived to be an old silver haired guitarist, he'd have emerged into much the same territory that Sco frequents. The slippery merging of blues, jazz, country, funk often in the same song, often in the same lead break!
@basildog0073 жыл бұрын
Mmm Hendrix would have a lot to work on in terms of harmonic context, chord progressions. He is still a blues/pentatonic guy... I can see a similarity in terms of adventurous playing though. I see what you mean I think. They share kind of the same freedom in their respective genres...

The first song is actually "Heck of a Job" from the album "This Meets That". I spent years looking for it as "New Orleans", but it was futile. I bought the CD and just played it out of curiosity one minute ago, and almost cried.
@ojnabieoot9 жыл бұрын
I think Scofield called it New Orleans before 2005 (that is, Hurricane Katrina) - the title on This Meets That refers to a comment Bush made about FEMA head Michael Brown.

Right you are Robb! I misunderstood this section of his Wikipedia article: "The largely self-taught drummer began playing at the age of seven. While in high school, he played in a Top 40 cover band and the school orchestra, and went to a summer music camp at Stanford Jazz Workshop, where he met jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie. After high school graduation, Stewart attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, playing in the jazz and marching bands as well as the orchestra. He then transferred to William Paterson University (then William Paterson College), where he played in ensembles directed by Rufus Reid, studied drums with Eliot Zigmund and Horacee Arnold and took composition lessons from Dave Samuels".
@GlennMichaelThompson11 жыл бұрын
Refreshing music to my ears. Absolutely love the interplay... and since they're improvising I guess that would be a reason to call it "jazz". But honestly putting music into categories has always been irrelevant to me. Steve Swallow's been one of my favourite electric bass players since I first heard him back in the 70's. Thanks for the upload!
