Organist John Scott plays organ music of Johann Sebastien Bach, the three setting of Nun komm' der Heiden Heiland from the Leipzig Chorales. He performs on the Taylor & Boody pipe organ in the Gallery of Saint Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue in NYC. These were filmed by Joe Vitacco in January of 2014. Please share these video and leave your thoughts on them. Thank you.
From John Scott:
I'm looking forward very much to playing Bach's 18 'Leipzig' Chorales on the beautiful Taylor and Boody organ at St Thomas Church on Saturday 14 June at 4pm. The centerpiece of the set is a triptych of settings based on the Advent hymn "Nun komm der Heiden Heiland." The first of these, BWV 659, is a quietly rhapsodic decoration of the chorale melody in the right hand, a phrase at a time, over a walking bass line. This is accompanied by two other voices that begin by foreshadowing the chorale melody.

I regret not hearing and seeing this great organist play. He was superb. And the organ is just what Bach would have enjoyed playing, RIP Mr. Scott. William Stead

John is such a spiritual player, and always has been. In the late 70's, John was assistant organist at Southwark cathedral, where I was in the choir at the time. I still remember the way he played 'There is a green hill far away', a simple hymn, but the memory of it still makes me cry. I've heard this piece so many times; how does he wring so much out of it?? We've lost a great musician.

I absolutely love this piece, have since I was a little tot. I want to play this so badly on an organ one day.....perfect speed, I loved the registration. The extra-long picardy third chord at the end caused me some tears, I must admit. Thank you :)

+Clo B (ILoveTakeThat5) 7 months later, this piece has an air of grief when I listen as I remember that this lovely sir John Scott, beautiful organist, has just passed. :'(

Chloe B ,- did you get around to learning this piece? I'm a terrible sight reader, but can play the first minutes worth perfectly without music. I too am aiming to be able to play the entire piece. It really touches the soul.

Although I sadly do not have access to an organ (lol), I want to learn the Bach-Busoni version for piano, as that will suffice for me, at least for now. I totally agree, something about this piece feels so ethereal and soul-crushing, but in a beautiful way..

this piece in particular sounds so different played by different organists and organs, but this is how I like it best, like I heard it originally.

What a beautiful piece - yes I guess I agree with anyone who thinks it’s melancholy but....again the beauty trumps EVERYTHING else. RIP Mr. Bach!

+Sanrus Yes, there was to be more. Just wanted to do this to promote the organ. There is a recording of the Bach A minor and the Guilmant March on a theme of Handel. I have to re-edit these, my audio was horrible noisy and now I can clean it with software that didn't exist. Wish I owned the Sound Device 702 by then.

+pipe-organ It's incredible, though, how the most refined playing can still communicate so much through audio equipment that is far from ideal. I listened to the Bach A minor, but not to the Guilmant yet.

+Sanrus This was what the rector said the day after Mr. Scott died as a Mass for the repose of his soul - that in less then 24 hours had hundreds and hundreds of people filling Saint Thomas Church for a silence Mass for the repose of Mr. Scott's soul. The below is what I wrote down from the rector's excellent and short homily. The NY Times sort of incompletely quoted a piece of the sermon from the Requeim Mass last Thursday - which was just likely an over site. But it took away from the meaning of what was really said which was much more encompassing. Here are a few quotes I took down. “John has been nagging us for weeks and weeks, ever since I arrived as rector, he (John) said I want on the new organ, Bach's words, I want to look at it like Bach would have looked at it, soli Deo gloria, Glory to God Alone" Rev. Canon Carl F. Turner, the rector at St. Thomas went on to say how John taught him about humility. Fr. on to say, “ I have met many musician in my life, not that many of them I have met, in church, have first talked about the Glory of God, AND THE NEED TO HELP PEOPLE DISCOVER JESUS IN THEIR LIVES, but John did and he was remarkable for that…” “….How could you go through Holy Week at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue and not know that our Director of Music had any doubts what he was singing and teaching others to sing, he taught people to sing the story of our Faith. He taught us to believe what we sang! - the Glory to God alone….” The NY Times sort of incompletely quoted a piece of the sermon from the Requiem Mass last Thursday - which was just likely an over site.
