Brought this old Boomer (69 in '23) to tears......and a few belly laughs immediately after. John can tell a story, allright. Do you other Boomers really know how lucky we were to have been born into this time and this place?? We had just KILLER music coming at us from every which way back in the day. I've had a great life......any big pains were pretty much my own doings. What a joy to see this vid....thank you for posting it. jbeinarizona

I was at this show. First time since 1986 that I was in NYC. Never got to see the Spoonful in their heyday. I wasn't about to miss this one though. Joe Butler was nursing a sore body part so he didn't show even though he lives nearby. Five tunes with half the Spoonful is a great memory. John's stories are icing on the top.

John should do a story tellers tour... once the world gets back to normal. I saw John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett together with both telling stories and performing. It was amazing. I can only imagine what John’s would be like. But it would be fantastic.

Saw him at the first Woodstock. I was one of those stuck in traffic and parked in the bottom of ditch miles a way and walked in. The girl I was with was lost when they split the crowd because a light fell over on one of the towers, and kept my calm by listing to Johns soothing voice. Don't remember anything he played, understood the reassuring vibes he was putting out and certainly didn't know he was a last minute fill in act. Was impressed by him then, later discouraged by some of his solo work, but was impressed by a tv interview and more impressed by today's performance. Welcome back John! I'm now a fan.

Do you remember who he followed or who followed him? I read a story, could've been in Wikipedia, where's there's debate about when he came on to play. Country Joe swears it was a Friday, most other people say it was Sat., either before or after Santana, but I guess it was after a rain storm and they had to sweep the water off the stage to get it dry, that's why they needed an acoustic set until everything was dry enough for the next band. Do you remember any of that? It's weird that John himself can't confirm or remember the sequence of it all. Thanks!

Saw John twice at Poor David's Pub in Dallas. Terrific shows. He weaves great stories through the performance. It was a real treat seeing him, as the Spoonful was and still is one of my favorite Sixties groups. I think the "Goodtime Music" label led them to be taken less seriously than they deserved. They remain quite underrated to this day. And they played their own instruments!

Fantastic ! Thanks for posting. The Lovin' Spoonful was the best American group of the 60's, bar none. And they played their own instruments on their fantastic songs. Who needs the Wrecking Crew in NYC ? Thanks, Steve and John for this great video.

Sometimes he tells the story that a YOUNG GIRL actually showed up and danced in front of them at the Night Owl-which was unusual-and one member, maybe Zal, said "it's starting to happen"! this song(magic) was written later that night

I'll bet that guy has that bottle of water on his mantel...lol I would! These guys are royalty..Rip Zal.. They were what I was...Privileged to grow up with.. You can understand why today's music is just like processed cheese and performers look like a Las Vegas production behind them to hide the lack of pure talent, hard work and dedication..
