From Hullabaloo, The Lovin Spoonful performing: You Didn't Have To Be So Nice. (1965) Great looking video with a bit of shimmy due to the age of the original tape. Still an excellent look at a huge band in their day...

Aberdumbie Well, I was there as a teenager in the 60's, and remember my favorite musicians like Hendrix, Joplin & Morrison die from drugs. I remember the race riots & the cold war. I was in grade school when JFK, RFK & MLK were assassinated, so don't pretend to school me on how great everything was back then, as though life was all Leave it to Beaver. Sure life seemed simpler then, but it was because we were young, carefree, didn't have a mortgage, have bills to pay, kids to raise etc. I'm sure for our parents it was just as stressful as ever, especially since in most families back then, only the father worked & the mother raised the kids. So, when I ask my kids today if life is good, they sit there with twitter, video games etc & think they have it so much better than we did. It is all in how you look at it. There were great times then, but let's not forget what else was happening back then too.

Saw John Sebastian back in 2002 or 2003 while volunteering as an usher in a performance arts center in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He had recently undergone some sort of throat surgery and we could hardly hear his voice. But the audience loved him so much, even if he was louder we still probably couldn't have heard him, what with the applause and shouts of happiness (especially when he started playing "What a Day For a Daydream") and it was still a great show. John is such a lovable character!

All of their big hits were in just a two year period. They were around for a bit longer than that but once Zal left the band they didn't do much (two moderate hits and that was it). Like most successful 60's bands they were really diverse, they didn't stay with one style of music. Compare this, Dayream, Summer In The City, Nashville Cats, Darlin Be Home Soon, Do You Believe In Magic, Rain On The Roof ..., all different from one another yet all really good. Great songwriting, performing and production. I had no idea back then what a speical time it was for music. I was born in 1960 and started paying attention to what my older siblings were listening to by late 1963, right before the British invasion. I was so lucky to grow up in that era. For several years from the time I started listening the radio was filled with great new music constantly. We'll never see anything close to that again.

British invasion was about 1774, and people were excited about tea or some such energy drink. Music is and was multicultural - no invasions.

Surprised my wife with song at our wedding. A close friend with a great voice collaborated with the band - who didn’t know the song - and they nailed it. Just me and her, gown and tux - great memory, great song. Thanks Keith and Alan!

Not this performance obviously, but there ARE clips of the Spoonful singing live. One of the better live bands I've heard.

Who could vote down on this?! Beautiful and such a talented person in John Sebastian. My grown daughters are glad that we shared the best music with them as they were growing up.

The romans, my Latin teacher stressed, turned thumbs down in the Coliseum to indicate to gladiators, " no. Don't kill him." I have no idea why youtube even has that thumby thing. I do understand nerdish zucherberg cashing in on his college dating evaluations 20 years ago, doing such stupid stuff - facebut started as a way to secretly rate girls.

I used to go to Hullabaloo after hours when I was a teenager. We weren't old enough to get in to the show, so they would put on a revolving stage, local groups and some popular ones as well. Every half hour the stage would bring in another group that was setting up behind the curtain. They took out all the tables and most of the chairs, so we had to bring our own chairs, and brought food and our drinks because everything was closed except the bands that played. Saw the Doors for the first time, and I think it was one of their first gigs before they had even recorded their hit song "light My Fire". the girls in the audience of which there were only about 30 or 40 people. Not a large group. But it was a great way to watch bands. Lots of people took drugs to keep them awake so they wouldn't fall asleep, but a lot of them did sleep through it. Can you imagine if they did that now, all the homeless that would try to get in. Not that I have anything against them, but our streets weren't overtaken by the homeless back then. But there were some travelers that passed through Hollywood on their treks to where ever.

I was so young - only 6 years old - but remember this song well. We always had the radio tuned into WIXY or CKLW in Clevleand. The radio sat on the kitchen table - was there until the house sold 30 years later. Anyway, even as a kid I appreciated the harmonies and jangly guitars of songs like this. Somethign about the harmonies and easy going pop style that really resonated with me back then - and to this day as well. Happy to be stuck in the past!

I was front and center for the British Invasion, the summer 1964. Loving Spoonful was one of the big invading British bands in America and You Didn't Have To Be So Nice. (1965) rode the top of the charts all summer long that year.
