Well, I worked with a spotter/partner on every sniper op in Ramadi Iraq back in 05-06 & we both "Guestimated" when we did not have time to "Lase" the targets distance, then simply split the difference. Most times we were around 10/20 yds off at the worst and it was negligable. Much more comes into the long shot (elevation/wind/angle, etc.) But this is good info for the naked eye quick estimating. But no designated marksman/sniper should have much difficulty with any shot out to 600 yards, or your definitely in the wrong MOS/ Job position. Field Craft is a bigger part of being a Sniper than being able to shoot. So much to constantly learn since technology is always changing and making it easier to rely on high tech equiptment nowadays. But the basics are what every shooter needs to master to extend his confidence and hit probability.
@mcjon777 жыл бұрын
One fun aspect of this is that since you are doing this with the naked eye, you can actually practice this in public without a gun. Use Shrek's rules-of-thumb to judge distance, then confirm your estimate with something like google maps.

cool vid and great hasty system, i used to just judge distance every and anywhere I went. What helped me was I judged based on avg man height at a certain distance usually 600m and down a 100 meters at a time. Then when I could confirm with the range finders. Over time I just started memorizing man height on avg at distances from 600 down. But I think the point is to do it all the time and come up with your own comparison system.

I can see light between people's legs out to 700 yards when they are walking. Out to 400 yards his system seems workable.
@p51mustang248 жыл бұрын
+Hаndouts Аre А Slаve's Rаtions I think the system is workable dependent on an individuals vision, and also the way that their individual brain perceives that visual data. I can say for a fact that I do not see someone as a triangle at 600 yards, so I would have to identify what I DO see and substitute that. With contacts I do see slightly better than 20/20 though, about 20/15. Without them I can't identify a face at 20 yards! There are some other differences such as bright lights on a dark background producing pronounced halo's that are unique to wearing contacts, and can be affected heavily even just by changing contact brands. It's still good food for thought so each individual can devise a similar scheme. It might need tweaking over long periods of time as well; what you see and perceive in your 20's might not be the same in your 50's.

Interesting idea. Will try it out. Recommend just getting a good rangefinder and practicing estimating. If you have good depth perception, you can get pretty proficient. Honestly beyond 400 yards you're going to need help from your target- either contrast or movement. Keep in mind beyond 400 your bullet is dropping fast. Small errors in range est result in big misses.

+minicoopertn He doesn't explain the distance, but he seems to be implying that this is for the naked eye. You could adapt the system based on the magnification you are using (4x => face at 400yrds, no face at 800, no hands at 1200, etc.). Then again, maybe this is for quick estimation outside the scope, so you know your approximate dope before you get in your glass, so you can make accurate hits quicker.

@maxk43245 жыл бұрын
Depends on the game, but in the mass majority of cases no this will not hold. Most games with seemingly large maps make use of subtle optical illusions to make distances seem larger, or things move faster. For example, in every GTA game, even the absolute best cars don't actually go that much faster than the average cars of the same type in the game. Instead, they use a very slight blurring/warping effect around the edges of your screen to make objects that approach you (ie as you drive towards them) appear to zip by you crazy fast. Then they just tie the degree of this warping effect to your current speed so that you don't trigger it when driving slowly.
