Doc was 1/3 of one of the greatest late night shows of our time (my opinion). I may only be 24 and all but i remember him also as a substitute announcer when johnny carson was off. for Jay Leno and Joan Rivers

In 1979, I was a guest on the Tonight Show. Doc was very humble and shy when I met him back stage before the show. When I was showing him how I was going to shape his hands during the Show, he was shaking. I asked him, "Doc, what could you be nervous about.....you are one of the greatest trumpet players in the World". Doc's reply to me was, "That is the only thing that I am good at!" I was twenty six years old, and this great man, my idol, told me that! The video is up.

They don't get any better, classier, or cooler than Doc!

I have the "Swingin' the Blues" cd. It is excellent. One of my favorite discs. :)

Wait a minute. He says he’s completely satisfied with how his new recording turned out and makes a brief reference to the musicians on the date. And you don’t ask him to identify any of them? Just because you didn’t think of that follow up question beforehand is no excuse.

yeah, successful musicians who avoid drugs and aren't overly neurotic do tend to stay young ...
