Equally the figures released have no details of the ‘missing’ presumed dead (under the rubble). No realistic assessment can be made in such a short period of time. A proportion of hospitalised patients who would have naturally died from disease or natural causes I suspect have also been added to the ‘death toll’ to inflate the numbers. Likewise, the number of fighters are missing from the list including those who are Hamas but are employed by UNRWA, Hospital Staff & Press Reporters. The tunnels are a three-level network of living spaces. “We didn’t want to kill the enemy soldiers,” “We only wanted to wound them - as they would need four more soldiers to carry the casualty back immediately and his blood, wounds and screaming would lower the morale (of the others), whereas a dead soldier could be left behind temporarily and also may raise tempers and the morale,” he tells us. What I find the most egregiously dishonest is the reports of children killed. Nobody wants children to die. But it’s not as simple as that. I saw a BBC report where a 15 year old and an 8 year old were killed, shot. This was on the BBC website, a service I used to trust implicitly. There was a video, one taken by a group of boys and most of them looked around the same age as the 15 year old boy who was killed. The lead photo for the article was an old photo of the 8 year old in happier times, which is kinda dishonest in itself. Looking at the video with a dispassionate eye, the video provided by the boys looked like they were setting up to throw something, an object that was handed from one boy to the older boy who was shot, it looked exactly like an attempted ambush of a passing IDF convoy of soft skinned vehicles. They even had the phone video as one of their number was positioned to get the best video. The BBCs reporting had a diagramme of locations and the 8 year old was almost directly behind but back maybe 20 metres from the boy with the object, from the direction of the vehicle occupant who shot them. The IDF provided a photo of an object they claimed was being held by the dead boy (the 15 year old) that looked like a pipe bomb but it could have been something more military, it was unclear. Maybe that object was planted, but the boys sure acted as if they had a weapon of some kind. So, and I cannot say for sure this is what happened but it looked like a group of adolescent boys planned an ambush. Someone’s eight year old brother or neighbour tagged along, because of course it’s normal to let your eight year old attend a terrorist/resistance action against heavily armed conventional troops. The soldiers noticed the boys and when one of them looked to be about to throw something they opened fire. The thrower boy and the 8 year old almost directly behind him were killed. The other boys took off (no one else was shot) and passed the video on to the government of Gaza which distributed it to news orgs. Now, this is an awful tragedy. But it doesn’t matter how old you are, if you plan to throw a possibly explosive device at conventional troops in the middle of a war, don’t be surprised if you end up dead. So, we have two more statistics - an 8 year old and a 15 year old child were shot by the IDF. It sounds horrible (and it is) but the IDF behaved well and within the rules of war. Whomever was responsible for the 8 year old heading off to war is responsible for that boy’s death. But all we see, unless we want to look more closely, is two more children killed.

The daily numbers are from the Gazan health ministry, these numbers are based upon counting corpses. These numbers have been investigated and were found to be reliable (in Lancet, for example). They are not reliable final estimates. They are a lower bound for casualties.
