@@katerinaargyropoulou8818 LOL... have you seen the Greek letters? It is very difficult for Greek ex-pats to learn to speak Greek, let alone learn how to write and read it. Even Italians have trouble learning their grandparents language wich is written in Latin alphabet, and similar to Spanish wich is like a second language in the USA. I know a Kakouri in our neighborhood. They don't speak Greek though.

As a fellow Stamatopoulos with parents from nearby Arcadian villages just to the west of Kakouri (Artemisio) there is nothing like visiting your ancestral villages (mine are Drakovouni & Nymfasia). Also Ancestry has been great at finding more relatives in North America.

John we are close in age. Our parents left Greece for a better life. My mother was 18 years old when she took the Trans Atlantic voyage to Halifax Canada and then on a train to Saskatchewan to meet up with my father. It was considered scandalous for a young unwed woman to travel across the Atlantic. Not a word of English. Her parents we’re against her leaving Greece unwed. But my mother trusted my father who was waiting for her. Both determined to make a life together in Canada. I am now planning to retire in Greece in the next year and a half to Nafplio. I’m going back to Nafplio to buy property in March. Once I get my Greek citizenship it’s good bye Canada!!! My father’s side of the family are rich in heritage. They are descendants of the famous Medici family of Florence and Toscany Italy. So much still to learn. Good for you for wanting to discover your roots.

My parents and their births were obscure and in some cases false and in multiples in some areas. My uncle was only 15 when he fought to save his village. They had rounded up all the male of all ages to execute them. My uncle saved them. Long story, point is, after World War Two they had more luck. Documents for my dad in Tripoli were non existent

I will tell you why Greeks left Greece. For many in the 50's who went to Australia, it was because Australia needed workers. The Greek government sold them to the Australian government and was supposed to give the money to the families they left behind. And in true Greek tradition, they did not pass on the money. The government kept it. For others who left. It was because there was no future in Greece. And for Greeks today still in Greece there is no future. The ones that left, made money, purchased houses and carved out a decent living. And now travel back and forth to Greece. However, Greeks don't consider them to be Greek. Even though they were born there.

The years 1904-16 was the time of the "Spanish Influenza" as well as post-war famines. Greece was abandoned by the Ottoman Empire and invaded/plundered piecemeal by Italian and Bulgarian princes in the interim
@kourtourafi
@kourtourafi 2 ай бұрын
I'm really trying to understand what the heck you're talking about. Greece was never... abandoned by the Ottoman Empire (you make it sound as if it's a bad thing for Greece). The precise verbiage would be that Greece 'hacked' the Ottoman Empire in the 1st Balkan War (1912-1913), thus liberating Epirus and Macedonia, with the latter being coveted by Bulgaria, ally of Greece in the 1st Balkan War but enemy in the 2nd Balkan War (1913), which Greece also won, thus solidifying the annexation of Macedonia to the Independent State of Greece. Bulgaria had always dreamt of gaining access to the Aegean Sea, however their dreams remained dreams. Therefore, there was no Bulgarian invasion of Greece and there was no Italian invasion of Greece either from 1904 to 1916. I guess you refer to the Italian seizing of the Dodecanese but this happened when the islands were part of the Ottoman Empire.

Why not? I think you can love your heritage and still marry someone from a different one.

Some half Greeks do far more honour to their country than some... Greeks Greeks. You belong in the 2nd category.

You can. And you can say that you have a certain heritage. What do annoy me with Americans is when they say that they are English, Irish, Swedish, Greek or whatever. No, you are not. It's like saying that I'm a butcher just because my grandfather was a butcher, even though I've never butchered anything in my life.
