Nothing simple about perfection. First of all, he must understand everything that is happening, has happened and could happen. He executes and controls the gameplan. He probably had a bag, but restrained himself and had the focus to ALWAYS make the best play.

As someone who watched and loved that whole era, what people today don't realize is Stockton was a deadly shooter also, he just didn't shoot often and always looked to pass 1st unless he was wide open or the game was on the line. He shot very little. He could have easily had a higher scoring average if he jacked up shots like today's PGs do.

an overlooked point with Stockton is that he played with the all time leader in free throws, Karl Malone, which diminished his assist totals a lot. I heard Chris Ford make this point on the Simmons podcast circa 2007. Stockton should have had more assists, because on a lot of the plays Malone was just looking for the foul. Chris Ford made the point that Stockton got screwed on a lot of his assists due to this factor.
@steefvanburen7985

Could be a good one. If the player who gets fouled makes a freethrow, and so adding a point to the score. The player who assisted before the foul should get rewarded with a assist. Without that assist he wouldnt have got to the line anyway.

@@markcothran2615 I’m thinking English must not be your native language. If that’s in fact the case, I suppose it makes sense as to why you’d misconstrue my comment.

Im from NJ so have been a lifelong Nets fan but the Jazz was my Western Conference team and John Stockton was one of my favs of all time. Cant tell you how many times Jordan broke my heart for Stockton. That game winner should have never happened when he pushed off Bryant Russel. Still stings me lol
