The post read: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Sykes after a courageous fight with cancer. He was not only a brilliant musician but also a kind and charismatic soul who touched the lives of many.”
Sykes was a true guitar icon, celebrated for his powerful riffs and memorable contributions to rock music. He gained worldwide fame for his work on Whitesnake’s self-titled 1987 album, which featured timeless hits like “Still of the Night” and “Is This Love.” Despite his pivotal role in creating the album’s sound, he was controversially dismissed from the band before its release due to creative differences with frontman David Coverdale.
Born in Reading, England, in 1959, Sykes began his career with the heavy metal band Tygers of Pan Tang before joining Thin Lizzy in 1982. His contributions to their final album, Thunder and Lightning, cemented his reputation as one of rock’s finest guitarists. After leaving Thin Lizzy, he joined Whitesnake and later formed his own band, Blue Murder, continuing to influence generations of musicians.
Beyond his music, Sykes was known for his dedication to his craft and his love for his fans. In recent years, he had been working on new material and often expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of those who followed his career.
Tributes have been pouring in from fans and fellow musicians around the world. Many have taken to social media to honor Sykes’ legacy, calling him a “guitar legend” and “one of the greatest rock musicians of all time.”
