This video reminded me of an old memory from middle school. A black teacher of mine was talking to us about segregation and how explicit white supremacy was back then (though I don't think she used that term). At some point in the lecture she said that the white kids in the class would have been fine if in that situation (I'm white but the heritage I know is all throughout Latin America. I wore it proudly on my sleeve especially back then). When she said that I kinda just looked at her confused because I didn't feel like I was explicitly the same as other white kids and she said "you would have had to hide your identity but you could survive. That's something others couldn't do". Then I just felt upset. It was the first time I had learned about what white privilege meant and it disgusted me that I was in any way related to that. I grew up poor. Having a strong moral compass ment more to me than any other social or material status and it was hurtful to know we had a system that was explicitly against that idea.

My mom's family came from Ireland after the potato famon to New York. My dad side is more mixed, but we've traced an ancestor coming from London to Virginia to work as an indentured servant. Some of my family doesn't support immigration to our country, and it really baffles me. I would really love to see the melting pot of cultures that my grandparents experienced living in the Bronx in the early 20th century. The United States was built by immigrants - some of whom did not choose to come here. We are a stronger nation when we come together as free people. I think the contribution of Asian immigrants is often overlooked. They were instrumental in building the west. Nowadays, I see many Middle Eastern and Indian immigrants, and of course, the racism that comes with that. But surely as time progresses, they too will be undeniably American

Your comment on how Ireland sorta does similar things to what Britain / England did to them can 100% be paralleled to people reacting in ways they may not realize are a direct result of the abuse they endured. After all, all countries are is concepts created by people, so naturally if another country hurts another group of people, its gonna lead to some cracks in the people that make the foundation of a nation. Everything you've said - beautifully spoken. I was hesitant to watch initially because it seemed different from the content I've come to associate you with, but I'm so glad I did. A huge topic - weren't the English colonised (clue in the name) - the country we call England was ruled over by the pre-Celts, Celts, Angles, Saxons, French, Welsh (yes the Tudors were Welsh), Scots (House of Stuart), Dutch (House of Orange), Germans (Hanoverians). I guess the English got so used to being colonised by ruling elite's from elsewhere that it was a given in life. People thought of countries in a different way then and so no one batted an eyelid when Dublin was made a part of Bristol in 1171 so that Bristol could sell slaves onto the European markets (cit. A Concise History of Ireland, p.263, Joyce, Patrick Weston. M.H. Gill, 1912). It's easy to be revisionist in our view of history, and judge the past by the standards I hold dear, but we need to remember that we're only one small spec on a huge flow of history. What seems a normal way of thinking to me today will be equally outrageous tomorrow.

It is worth pointing out that when the English Crown started invading and occupying Ireland, the English at that point in time were a subjugated people and had been since 1066. King Henry II spoke French as a first language, was born there and spent the vast majority of his time there. Heck, his successor Richard I wished he could sell London, such was his lack of interest in the place. To those guys, Ireland was just one of many territories that swore allegiance to them.

Unfortunately the Irish are not interested in hearing this, they do not want to know. And there isn’t any actual evidence there were “No Blacks No Dogs No Irish “ signs all over England. They don’t want to hear Cromwell waged a terrible bloody civil war in England that took generations to get over. The Irish only want to hear the bit about Ireland . English history is in the hands of other people and there doesn’t seem to be much we can do about it. We are to be the bad guys Our history is subject to historical negationism and it’s damaged us badly.

The thing about the 'mangling' of Irish placenames by English is that that's nothing special, it always happens when a people speaking one language conquer or rule another. It happened again and again just within Britain. I come from Lincoln, which is an Anglo-Saxon version of the Latin 'Lindum Colonia', which comes ultimately from the Celtic 'lin' meaning a pool or water. I live in Nottingham, which is a Norman reduction of 'Snottingaham', the Anglo-Saxon for "homestead of the followers of Snot". The Normans will have found an initial sn- "too difficult to pronounce" as you put it, because that consonant combination didn't exist in Norman-French. It's not just a British thing, in other words. The Pictish language is buried somewhere under the Gaelic/English placenames of eastern Scotland. And since Gaelic will not have been the first language in Ireland it's entirely possible that some traditional Gaelic placenames are versionings of pre-Gaelic names that the incomers couldn't pronounce properly.

As an Irish American I feel both sides of the coin. My ancestors have both been colonised and been colonisers. And it's something that happens insanely often throughout history. As others have pointed out, a very loaded, long and complex topic. In regards the relationship between England/UK and Ireland, this may not be popular but pre-reformation, what happened was nothing unusual for the time. To the English Crown, Ireland was just one of many territories that in their eyes owed allegiance to them and they had the Papal authority to back it up. I think things really went sour during and after the Reformation when England, Wales and Scotland became Protestant and Catholics were held in deep suspicion. This suspicion only ended relatively recently. I think even when my Mum (Anglican) married my Dad (Catholic), some of the older members of the families didn’t particularly approve, I believe that even my paternal grandmother had an opinion on it and this was in 1980. Thankfully it is better now and I am now happily married to a wife whose parents are Irish and I have been trying to encourage her to learn about her heritage (actually using your videos as it happens). Somewhat in vain at the moment, but am getting there. I think though there are a couple of things I didn’t fully agree with you on. While the British Empire was doing its thing, so was every country in Europe that had access to the Atlantic. The British just happened to be the most successful at it. If anything, colonialism that we would recognise was spearheaded by the Spanish and Portuguese. Even in Europe, you could argue about Islamic colonisation as the Ottomans steamrolled across South Eastern Europe and ruled there for over 300 years. Further afield, you saw empires in the Middle East and Asia subjugating other people in particular and warlords in Africa trading other Africans to serve as slaves to the Europeans. Pretty much nobody gets a free pass. I’m not saying if the British Empire was better or to excuse the bad things it did do, I’m just saying this was the international norm of the time in the same way things like the UN are now. Had I been born 100 years earlier in 1891, there’d have been no reason to assume that the British Empire would end anytime soon. It had been around for centuries at that point. My other point that I strongly contend with is claiming that the Scots were colonised by England. That is false and a BS narrative pushed by a sizeable number of Scottish Nationalists. Scotland joined the union with England after their own attempt at colonisation backfired and left them bankrupt. Afterwards, they were among the most enthusiastic imperialists and most of the hardline Protestants in Northern Ireland come from Presbyterian churches from Scotland. Just to end, I can’t thinking of anything more insulting to the people of Donegal than to compare it to Blackpool 😂

The feeling of solidarity with Native Americans as an Irish person is something I feel so strongly too. And, judging by history, that’s always been the case, right back to indentured/enslaved Irish folks being exploited alongside African slaves, to when, while Ireland was being starved by England, native Americans still reeling from the Trail of Tears scraped up funds to help with our struggle. I also really appreciate how you also put a spotlight on how us Irish folks still have white privileged, and how our colonization was still not unique or crueler than other colonized people’s.

Every culture in the world is formed in some way by wars and by colonization, even the Irish culture as it existed before the English invasions. The Celts invaded Ireland in 4 waves from 1000 to 500 BCE, the Celts themselves being from Central Europe. Irish is as natural on the island of Ireland as English or Arabic. You make yourself out to be a member of a persecuted group, similar to that of the Ukranians but in any real sense that couldnt be farther from the truth. Even the English themselves are a product of colonization. So are many native american tribes who spent eons fighting wars with each other, as any human civilization seems to do. You seem to strip what you call "native" peoples of the negative aspects of their human nature, describing them almost as noble savages, but the truth is that their history is much the same as ours.

There are arguments whether or not the Celts were a people or a culture which spread from Central Europe. Some linguists suggest the “Celtic” languages predate the arrival of Celtic culture by thousands of years. One group doesn’t have to replace another. The Vikings integrated here. The Normans integrated here. Some question if the Anglo-Saxons invaded England or did the Britons simply become Anglicised, the way they’d been Romanised. The Germanic languages became the language of trade along the North Sea so it made sense to start speaking like that.

@@kingofcards9516 you don't think the narrative of Irish repression will influence those being taught it? The winners write history and the Irish Republic are the current winners in this story. Thus a leftish Irish person taught about Irish regression would lead to them identifying ad one of the colonised. I have a mixture of British and Irish ancestry; specifically Irish, English (and a little Scottish), I have married a Welsh lady, although sadly walking into a pub isn't anymore funny. As it's illogical for my English half to apologise to Irish half I've developed a very disattached view in regards to the historical actions of the nationstates where my ancestors performance menial work.

@@JohnDRuddyMannyMan did the average Irish, Kentish, Northumbrian or mercian peasant really care which boot was on the neck? I'm not convinced most of Ireland did prior to the Easter rising. An oversimplification but people back then killed people to get things. IMO it doesn't matter if the person your killing to get something happens to be from a different culture. Add onto this that the winners write the history and on this topic the Irish Republic are the winners. As we're the anglo saxons and the vikings. I really enjoy you history videos, I listen to these other ones because whilst i don't agree with your political reasoning* it's important to avoid an echo chamber and I can't afford to give to patron but I can give you my time. *I don't agree with your reasoning, I do agree with plenty of your conclusions.

@@dww6 Identification with the colonised is not just a "leftist" position here, it's basically our default position, except for some pro-British elements in Fine Gael, generally from the upper classes. The overwhelming majoritu of the Irish people has always hated passionately British rule here. Our long history of rebellions tells you everything you need to know.

Scotland chose to form a Union and the Welsh were conquered long before the notion of a British Empire was ever conceived. Also it was the British Empire, not the English Empire. Anglo-phobia is very real in Ireland and I'd appreciate it if you didn't play into it. I have some sympathy for the way the Irish were treated by the BRITISH. The contempt that was shown to them was pretty abhorrent and Ireland is probably one of, if not the only, former territory that did not benefit from the Empire in any meaningful way however can we take a moment to imagine a world where the British Empire never existed. A world where the Atlantic Slave trade was never forcibly abolished by the Royal Navy, where the Indian practice of burning widows at the stake against their will was still commonplace, where global trade still involved long, dangerous journeys with a high risk of piracy attached to it. Also, do you think the industrial revolution and all the associated innovations that came with it would've happened without the Empire? Do you think that the Nazi menace in Europe wouldn't have succeeded in dominating Europe and wiping out vast demographics of people had the British Empire not stood alone against them following the fall of France? No Empire is innocent of any wrong doing but a world where the British Empire never existed is a bloody bleak one indeed. We need to celebrate the positives of the Empire whilst also condemning the negatives.

This is not aimed to be Anglo-phobic. Your suggestion though that the ONLY reason change happened in the world was because the British Empire existed is quite telling. That mentality of “well without us, would the savages have ever modernised at all?” Is exactly what I’m talking about. Sure, yea, loads of good things came from it, but loads of terrible things did too!

Now look, a Brit with a colonialist mindset and a superiority complex, what a rare and almost unheard occurence.

@@JohnDRuddyMannyMan Of course it is Anglophobia, John. The British Empire civilised us. We would be living in caves, worshipping the moon and living naked in the woodlands without the mighty, culturally superior and yet benevolent England. We should be eternally grateful for their civilising effort in this island. If we are not that grateful, well, that's because we're anglophobic!
