Please remember that John was influential had pull had admirers and followers and he took a massive step back. Did not let his pride nor his friends nor his followers get in the way. Everytime I hear or read about our Lord Jesus Christ who took the sin of all men , past , present and future who knew not sin , tears drips from my eyes coz he saved me too , but here what I don't get clear is, John knew Jesus when he came to be baptized from him and how he replied to Jesus confirming that he atlast saw the Saviour , but why did he doubt and afterwards while he was in prison ? Unfortunate that after so much preparation, sacrifice and personal experience at the Jordan River, John the Baptist ultimately could not believe that Jesus was the Messiah. John had so many followers, some say as many as one million, yet only a few were recorded as following Jesus. Why? Why wouldn't John say to all his followers that now was the time for them to follow Jesus? Even John himself - why was he not the very first disciple of Jesus? "I must decrease, He must increase? No! How could John decrease if he followed Jesus? He went off on his own and got caught up in Herod's personal relationships for which he lost his life in a most ignoble way. Although Matthew 11:11 is mentioned, there is no attempt to explain this very important verse uttered by Jesus Himself: Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. You understand what this means; do not let others interpret it for you with twisted semantics. If someone is least in the Kingdom of Heaven and that someone is greater than you, then you are not in the Kingdom of Heaven. A tragedy for John but much more for Jesus. For without John and his followers support, without that foundation, Jesus stands alone at the mercy of a fallen world. "None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory." 1 Corinthians 2:8

I can only offer the following: In an alternative world where the ranks of Jesus followers swell to such numbers, there is no certainty that Jesus would have been crucified and with such there would be no resurrection. Things are as they must be, though your point raised is truly valid, and begs the question 'Did John truly do all that was in his power to pave the way for Jesus'?

The Gospel spreads throughout the Roman Empire; Jesus is accepted as Messiah by many millions. It is no coincidence that Jesus is born when the Roman Empire ruled some 20% of the known world. Wouldn't God desire that his will for mankind be completed as quickly as possible to end the suffering of His children? Of course, it's heresy, but what if Jesus did not come to die? What if that were the only option after it was clear that he would not be accepted as Messiah? Going to the cross was mentioned only after the Transfiguration because that was the message carried to Jesus by Moses and Elijah. It just doesn't make sense that after 2,000 years of teaching and preparing the Israelites to love, follow and obey, that God would finally send Jesus only to have him killed. A blood sacrifice was not necessary; there are other examples but that is certainly the lesson of Abraham and the "sacrifice" of Isaac.

@@geecrawdad Agreed, all very valid, but all we can say is 'What if'? I just console myself with thinking when he returns, he will remain and his Kingdom will forever be. I just hope I make the cut? I've always tried to be a good person and treat everyone with respect, but this world makes that a daily challenge, and i'm sure there are not many perfect people living among us.

​@@siroswaldfortitude5346 I've presented a brief but logical and commonsense refutation of two of the most established beliefs of orthodox Christianity. That is not just a "what if". But that's ok; I understand that it hasn't piqued your interest. For other visitors that may happen by, I will close with this. We have been taught that Jesus' sole mission was to die on the cross to bear the weight of our sins as a ransom; the redemption of mankind. We have been taught that John the Baptist was perhaps the greatest prophet as his mission was to prepare the way of the Lord. But did Jesus really come to be crucified? If not, what was His plan? Indeed, John was a great prophet but did he accomplish his very crucial mission? If he failed, was it that failure that drove Jesus to the cross? Practically speaking, what will the Messiah do at the Second Coming? Will He float in on a cloud so that every eye sees Him or will he come like a thief in the night? Or shall we go with the Rapture? Which is it? Do you have a loved one who hasn't been a paragon of virtue? Is there a chance he will burn in Hell for eternity? Knowing this, will you be happy in Heaven? You might be told that your memory of that person will be wiped away so - no worries for you! Is that the God you believe in? Will our loving God allow such a place in His creation to exist for all eternity? Never stop asking questions. Never stop searching. God is alive and ever reaching out to us.

@@geecrawdad the crucifixion was prophacized and had to come to pass. Jesus blood is what saves us. Your "what if" scenario doesn't make alot of sense or line up with the fundamentals of Christian theology.
