Firstly it’s Qantas AIRWAYS not Airlines and John Travolta NEVER flew for Qantas, he owned an ex Qantas 707 that was painted in Qantas livery by Qantas and he acted as an ambassador for the company on a worldwide tour. Qantas got him a 747 endorsement free via their training department. I wish people making/narrating these things would spend more than a nanosecond on research.

I met John late one night in Salina, Kansas. A well known fuel stop for what both of us were flying at the time, 20 series Lear Jets. He had an instructor with him and wasn't particularly chatty in the pilot lounge. In about 2005 I ferried a B-757 to Lake City FL for maintenance and his 707 was there. Our maintenance rep knew his maintenance rep and we got a tour of his 707. The media loves to feature John all dolled up in a pilot uniform but he has never turned a wheel as a professional pilot. He is a hobby pilot that always has qualified professionals accompany him on his flights. He's a successful actor with an aviation habit, not a pro pilot that is an actor.

I’ve tried to find out how much time-in-type John Travolta had in his 707. I know he had 5,200 total time and nearly dozen type ratings. That time sounds like a lot but if you spread out the time equally over the 40 years he’s been flying, it comes out to be about 2 .5 hours a week. I can’t even imagine how the insurance works in his case.
@andredarin8966 Жыл бұрын
@@justreeln2946 It’s not hating to wonder how much “time in type” he has or what the specifics are of his insurance coverage. It isn’t hating to wonder how tricky approaches are handled, given the almost obsolete avionics.

Makes it even more special that while working full-time as a top actor and raising a family, he was able to get all his type ratings(12) and buy 5 jets with a dream house & runway. No need to minimize his aviation achievements. He certainly didn’t choose to work as an ambassador for Qantas because he needed the money. John Travolta been flying Airplanes almost 40 years. I remember John flying a Learjet into the Hilo Airport in the state of Hawaii in the Mid 1980’s. John would fly his B-707 into state Hawaii all the time. His late wife is from Hawaii. No one flies a jet solo. Maybe he flies with instructors, retired airline captain , that is a very smart thing to do, it is always good to be flying with experienced pilots. John has love for flying and aviation and that’s what it’s all about.

Commercial pilots dont get licenses for each type of aircraft they operate. For instance, John doesn't have separate licenses for the 707, 747, 737. But the newest addition to his personal aircraft fleet is amazing.

That is just a private with stricter tolerances. Technically, to fly a 747, you just need a private, with multi engine, and type rating, and you do not even need the instrument rating if you stay below 18,000 ft. Any jets or over 12,500 lb gross weight plane need a type rating. I don't think that include turbo props?

@@bradcrosier1332 I don't know just what FAA license John has, but I do know that for some years he took recurrent training at the AA Flight Academy, in one of the remaining 707 simulators that were kept on, after that fleet flew west, in order to train ANG KC-135 pilots and some of the other remaining 707 pilots around the world. Word from the instructors in the 707 program was that John was, in fact, a very good and professional pilot on the 707. I personally witnessed John arrive at EAA Airventure Oshkosh a few years back in that 707 - he was in the left seat as it pulled up to AeroShell Square. My understanding always was that he flew it himself; assisted, of course, by a copilot and a flight engineer. It is possible, albeit very rare, for someone to have something like a 707 type rating on a PPL. But since the 707 type rating check ride, like the rating check ride for any transport category aircraft, is always done to ATP (airline transport pilot) standards, it would make little sense not to get the ATP at the same time (of course, he would have had to take ground school and pass the ATP written exam, but every aspiring airline pilot does that long before applying, so it is not really a stretch). Anyone who could train and pass a 707 type rating at any level of license could qualify for an Airline Transport Pilot certificate without much further ado!

I once had the opportunity to ask then Boeing CEO Phil Condit if he was surprised by the popularity of the BBJ early in its program. He laughed and indicated that he was slated to receive one but they kept bumping him in the queue for key customers.

He’s a little odd, mainly cuz the Scientology stuff.. but end of day he’s a family man who really cares. That means more to me than a plane or movie. I gained a whole new respect for him after seeing his reaction to his son Jett’s untimely death. He changed, the grief physically and mentally changed him. He faced it head on, in the public eye. I dunno, how he didn’t care about ANYTHING in that moment but his son hit me hard. Selfish people don’t react like that to death, they make it about them somehow. John, just fizzled out and was a mess. End of the day, he’s a good man. So, I support him and pay to watch his shit when I can afford it. Also, Jett was a neat kid.. really brought John and his wife together and was the glue. He loved his dad a ton. That’s a special thing and he should be remembered. Thanks for reading.

Wow, John Travolta is amazing. He owns a fleet of jets, and fly's for Quanta airlines, and owns his own airport. Who blessed this guy? I didn't know his movies raked in that much revenue.

Nice planes, exorbitant price of operation and maintenance is crazy intense
