Firstly it’s Qantas AIRWAYS not Airlines and John Travolta NEVER flew for Qantas, he owned an ex Qantas 707 that was painted in Qantas livery by Qantas and he acted as an ambassador for the company on a worldwide tour. Qantas got him a 747 endorsement free via their training department. I wish people making/narrating these things would spend more than a nanosecond on research.

I met John late one night in Salina, Kansas. A well known fuel stop for what both of us were flying at the time, 20 series Lear Jets. He had an instructor with him and wasn't particularly chatty in the pilot lounge. In about 2005 I ferried a B-757 to Lake City FL for maintenance and his 707 was there. Our maintenance rep knew his maintenance rep and we got a tour of his 707. The media loves to feature John all dolled up in a pilot uniform but he has never turned a wheel as a professional pilot. He is a hobby pilot that always has qualified professionals accompany him on his flights. He's a successful actor with an aviation habit, not a pro pilot that is an actor.

I’ve tried to find out how much time-in-type John Travolta had in his 707. I know he had 5,200 total time and nearly dozen type ratings. That time sounds like a lot but if you spread out the time equally over the 40 years he’s been flying, it comes out to be about 2 .5 hours a week. I can’t even imagine how the insurance works in his case.
@andredarin8966
@andredarin8966 Жыл бұрын
@@justreeln2946 It’s not hating to wonder how much “time in type” he has or what the specifics are of his insurance coverage. It wasn’t all that long ago when you could count on planning to spend 10 years as an F.O. with your butt planted in the right seat before you qualified as captain of a beast like the 707. It isn’t hating to wonder how tricky approaches are handled, given the almost obsolete avionics.

Makes it even more special that while working full-time as a top actor and raising a family, he was able to get all his type ratings(12) and buy 5 jets with a dream house & runway. No need to minimize his aviation achievements. He certainly didn’t choose to work as an ambassador for Qantas because he needed the money. The man deserves to wear a pilot’s uniform if he so desires-he can land a heavy jet the same way any airline pilot can.

John Travolta been flying Airplanes almost 40 years. I remember John flying a Learjet into the Hilo Airport in the state of Hawaii in the Mid 1980’s. John would fly his B-707 into state Hawaii all the time. His late wife is from Hawaii. No one flies a jet solo. Maybe he flies with instructors, retired airline captain , that is a very smart thing to do, it is always good to be flying with experienced pilots. John has love for flying and aviation and that’s what it’s all about.

Actually, if he is a member of the crew (without a relief pilot) he is required to be in the seat per the Federal Aviation Regulations: § 91.105 Flight crewmembers at stations. (a) During takeoff and landing, and while en route, each required flight crewmember shall - (1) Be at the crewmember station unless the absence is necessary to perform duties in connection with the operation of the aircraft or in connection with physiological needs; and (2) Keep the safety belt fastened while at the crewmember station. Schmoozing or getting a massage is NOT going to make the definition of either "duties in connection with the operation of the aircraft" or "physiological needs."

Commercial pilots dont get licenses for each type of aircraft they operate. For instance, John doesn't have separate licenses for the 707, 747, 737. He would have a commercial pilot license, with type ratings for each aircraft he is qualified to operate, to include whether they be multi-engine piston, turbo, or jet aircraft. But the newest addition to his personal aircraft fleet is amazing.

John's lack of ATP is just because he did not need it, (or it expired, at his age and not working for an airline, he would have lots of recurrency training problems) he can pass a commercial test real easy. That is just a private with stricter tolerances. Technically, to fly a 747, you just need a private, with multi engine, and type rating, and you do not even need the instrument rating if you stay below 18,000 ft. Any jets or over 12,500 lb gross weight plane need a type rating. I don't think that include turbo props?

It would be FAR more important for him to have the basic airmanship skills to deal with a trim system malfunction, since that's how an MCAS malfunction manifests itself. If _EITHER_ of the two accident crews on the MAX flights had that (which ANY professional airman should, it is a very basic non-normal condition) they would have landed safely, just like the crew of the preceding Lion Air flight did - but the media didn't tell you about that (or at downplayed it if they did), because that doesn't fit the narrative they wish to present to you...

I found it quite funny, when they were explaining 737’s and they showed an A320 landing! 🤣

John that impressive because remember "welcome back carter" show and then just disappear after that movie because he was learning how to fly back then in then mid 70's. This is what you call doing something with the money you made by acting a good smart move. Also there is a rock band (don't recall the name). They own a plane to a concert anywhere else they're going to speak about the smart move there is .

That inspection schedule is suspect with the pressure that these aircraft will be under. Boeing Dreamliners had to have carbon fiber to attain and hold that much pressure. You can do this for almost any modern airliner, but it means that the rivets and welds are stressed too much and will develop fatigue earlier. I used to see it on commercial aircraft all the time. That's the biggest reason that most are only pressurized to 8000 ft instead of 6000 ft.

He’s a little odd, mainly cuz the Scientology stuff.. but end of day he’s a family man who really cares. That means more to me than a plane or movie. I gained a whole new respect for him after seeing his reaction to his son Jett’s untimely death. He changed, the grief physically and mentally changed him. He faced it head on, in the public eye. I dunno, how he didn’t care about ANYTHING in that moment but his son hit me hard. Selfish people don’t react like that to death, they make it about them somehow. John, just fizzled out and was a mess. End of the day, he’s a good man. So, I support him and pay to watch his shit when I can afford it. Also, Jett was a neat kid.. really brought John and his wife together and was the glue. He loved his dad a ton. That’s a special thing and he should be remembered. Thanks for reading.

In 2003 I met Travolta in the Crystal City Ritz Carlton 17th floor Concierge Level dining with a Pentagon office buddy, we were both Naval aviators (USMC pilot and Navy NFO). We were sitting close to the elevator, and all the sudden the elevator doors open and in dances John Travolta! He was with two of his bodyguards. He starts dancing around the hors d’oeuvre table, and then he immediately glanced at us. We were in uniform, and he came over and said, Hey, you guys are pilots ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Yeah, we had a short little chat with John and then all of a sudden his bodyguards tell him John we’ve got to get out of here and go to this meeting and he was gone like the wind. He was very young at the time.
