John Wall is a great shot blocking guard. When he was younger, Wall would to use his insane athleticism to chase guys down, or cover ground so fast as the help defender to erase shots. Today, he is still capable of doing those things, but he’s learned to slow down, on both ends, and that makes his eruptions that much more deadly. He wants to compete on the defensive end more. Instead of doing the playground reach to poke the ball lose and leak out, he’ll hawk the ball and stay in front. His discipline and drive have earned him All-Defensive Second Team honors, and he’s still only 24 years old.
There’s one thing that can be said about Wall with absolute certainty: he wants the ball. He’s willing to sacrifice his body to get the ball back for his team and he does so without hesitation. He’s matured as a player, and taking the challenge of going at elite ball handlers is evidence of that. The desire to do the dirty work, to get down and grind it out is the mark of someone who leads by example. He’ll fight with everything he’s got. It really doesn’t matter if he’s going up against Chris Paul, or LeBron, or a 7 footer. He won’t give up an inch, and that toughness has translated into steady improvement. Washington has had playoff success, with the Wizards pushing the #1 seed to six games in the Conference Semifinals in back-to-back years.
In this video, you’ll see what John does exceptionally well, which is block shots. Obviously, I’ve already made a video exclusively focusing on that (link below), the focus of this one is more on perimeter play. Dislodging the ball, diving for it, and just running it down, in general. It’s about his improved ability and knowhow combined with his bursts of explosive force.
Here's a link to the John Wall shot blocking video:

Really solid defender when he doesn’t reach and is fully engaged. His biggest liability is evading screens and whether to go under or over them. If he can still learn how to do that after the injury and he comes back with a jumper 🤔

As much as I love Wall and as much as I've grown sick of CP, Paul played all 82 games, finished in top 5 for steals per game, had absurd defensive +/- numbers. Outside of Tony Allen (hard to deny the work he continues to put in), Chris is probably the only spot you can argue (the rest being Dray, Kawhi & DJ finishing top 3 in DPOY voting) for 1st team. As for the All-NBA team, your guess is as good as mine. I'd have put him ahead of Klay or Kyrie but their teams were much more successful and Whitman didn't really get it together until the playoffs.

+Evin Gualberto Steals should not indicate if a player is good on defense, if so Steph Curry is an elite defender. It's not far fetch to suggest that John Wall is the better defensive player than Chris Paul. Chris Paul does not have the same defensive impact on his team as John Wall does. When Chris Paul on the court the Clippers defensive rating that is middle of the pack in the league and when he's off the court the Clippers are still middle of the pack. John Wall is a whole different story. The Wizards defensive rating when he's on the court is in the top 3-5 in the NBA and when he's off the court the team is bottom 5 in the league. And on multiple other advanced stats suggest that John Wall > Chris Paul defensively.Chris Paul got it off of reputation and reception. He is known as a guy that been consistently good/great defensively for so long that he was a no-brainer choice for All NBA First team.
@EvinGualberto
@EvinGualberto 8 жыл бұрын
+Vince Cook First, I agree with you that steals don't indicate if a player is good on defense. If you know anything about me or my page, you should have recognized that by now. Second, if you're going to throw out stats, at least be accurate with it. The Wizards finished 5th in terms of defensive efficiency while the Clippers finished middle of the pack (15th to be exact), but take into account teammates and individual performance. It could (and has been) argued that Paul plays with a plus defender in DeAndre Jordan, but basically no one on that team is outside of them. Defensive win shares vs win shares is a viable way of looking at this according to basketball reference, and those numbers are as follows: Chris Paul is second in DWS on his team at 3.2, compared to a 16.1 overall WS. DeAndre contributed a 5.4 DWS with 12.8 WS while no one broke 2.5 DWS but had much higher WS (Blake 2.4 DWS, 9.0 WS, Redick 0.9 DWS, 6.7 WS, Crawford 1.2 DWS, 3.6 WS, Barnes 2.1 DWS, 4.3 WS). The Wizards on the other hand were more balanced. Wall tied for DWS with Gortat at 4.2, while Gortat had the higher WS (8.6 vs 7.8 for John). Beal (contributed at 2.5 DWS versus a 3.0 WS) & Nene (2.4 DWS vs 3.7 WS) have higher numbers than anyone on that Clippers squad AND the DWS that are 1.0 or higher run 7 deep whereas the Wiz go to 11. Third, Paul ranks first in the entire league in isolation situations (as per Synergy sports), as he allowed only 0.565 points per play. Wall allowed opposing point guards to shoot 42.7% when he was defending, meaning they shot 1% lower with Wall defending them versus the rest of the year, while CP caused opponents to shoot 1.4% lower [that's the link I have featured, in case you want to check]. That being said, I agree that Wall was more important to his team defensively, but Chris Paul didn't earn the award on reputation. The entire voting system is flawed, that's why Kawhi Leonard didn't have the most first place votes but still won DPOY. Seeing as you're a knowledgable person, you know that people have first team votes and second team votes, so it's not as if they were presented with the choice of John Wall vs Chris Paul as the point guard for the all-defense team. The teams are put together by three positions (center, forward, and guard) and by the most number of votes, and unfortunately, the voting finished such that Paul finished 5th (with 170 points total with 67 first team votes) and Wall finished 9th (67 points total, 7 first team votes). washingtonwizardsblog.monumentalnetwork.com/2015/05/20/why-john-wall-was-named-2nd-team-all-defense
@kaysnow5567

Evin Gualberto Actually, I was pretty accurate with the stats. I said John Wall have a bigger impact defensively than Chris Paul. Chris Paul and the Clippers team defense is around 15th in the league when he's on the court. While, when he's off the court the team is still around 15th in the league. That's a fact. Even with poor defense and him being the best perimeter defender on the team there should be more of an defensive impact he brings to the team. If you go off my statement of John Wall making a bigger impact than your point of Wizards players vs. Clippers players defensive win shares is pointless. Look at the numbers when John Wall does not play and when he does and they numbers goes down drastically. Gortat typically play with Wall tons of the time and when he don't play with him the numbers goes down. Let's look at the advanced numbers that John Wall is better than Chris Paul at.... Defensive Real Plus/Minus (Player's estimated on-court impact on team defensive performance, measured in points allowed per 100 defensive possessions) that was by a long shot. He also ahead of him by a mile in the defensive box plus/minus ( a box score estimate of defensive points per 100 possessions, a player contributed above a league-average player, translated to an average team ) You bring up the fact that he held players to a lower field goal percentage and you can see the contradiction. You making it seem like my point of defensive impact is flawed, which is not, but you can't see the fact that DeAndre Jordan is making that defensive impact. People will not go to the paint with DeAndre Jordan and when they do it results in a miss shot. If you don't see that impact the Chris Paul iso stats and defensive field goal percentage stats, just like it would with Andrew Bogut. Perception is reality in the NBA. Most would believe that Chris Paul is the better defensive players because they see him guard Kevin Durant for 5 plays and rack up steals. John Wall was pretty clear cut the best defensive point guard last year. It's just like the LeBron James is the best defensive player in the league perception when he only chase down blocks and guard multiple positions.
@EvinGualberto
@EvinGualberto 8 жыл бұрын
+Vince Cook I agree like I said before that perception helped him get there, and I wasn't wholly disputing your point about them being better players. Also, at no point did I minimize DeAndre's impact. I told you he and Paul were plus defenders on a team with mostly non-plus defenders and that's why I brought up the isolation statistic, because they are similar at keeping their men in front of them (1.4 vs 1) and they have great shot blockers behind them (Gortat finished in the top 25 for shot blocking). My reason for bringing up that he held opposing guards to a lower FG% wasn't to point out that Paul > Wall as a defender, but simply to stress that it is a statistic used by others and that Paul isn't without merit. I did make this video in part to get people talking about Wall's defense with more reverence than they do. While I would like to see some statistical backup, or maybe a cited source for the stats you did throw out there (because while I know the stat you're talking about "by a mile" isn't a sound statistical reference), please recognize that I'm not trying to shut this argument down. If it were on me, the voting process would change because the entirety of the media selects picks and certain people should genuinely have their votes retracted. Blake, Wade, Pau Gasol all got votes for all-defense, and Carmelo, Kyle Lowry, Drummond & Love got for for all-NBA. It's an extremely flawed system.

kevinso187 There are only 3 forms of fouls, which are pushing, blocking, and holding, and the term "reach in" doesn't actually exist as a rule. You can go in and try to quickly poke away the ball (with the hand being an extension of the ball rule you can hit his hand ABOVE the wrist to). What you cannot do is keep your forearm extended there. For example, while your opponent is moving with the ball you try to stick your forearm across his body to the opposite side "reaching" for were he is dribbling the ball, with you moving with him on the side keeping your forearm extended. That would be considered holding/blocking which is a foul.
