@@Vlad-co6dd For people at your height, whats important is doing everything you can to prevent them from posting you up down low. Make that shit uncomfortable for them, use elbows and get low so that every time they try and push you they feel your elbows digging into them. From there, if they try and drive on you then its essential for you to get people when they gather. Quite often when that happens, they bring the ball low and that is your opportunity to slap the ball away. At your height, every time they take a jump shot, its a victory. When defending on the perimeter, just play good positional defense and be active.

Another thing that you gotta understand while playing defense is to NEVER EVER give up middle to the ballhandler. Force him/her to the sidelines where there is much less room to operate as the ballhandler. It's one of the reasons guys like Jimmy Butler and Kawhi Leonard are such great defenders; they don't let their man have any sort of space in the middle of the lane. Being a great defender means that you not only pay attention to tendencies of your opponent, but that you also have great core strength and good defensive footwork. Great vid!
@andreialexandruparfeni71298 жыл бұрын
Baqar Ali Agreed.
@jamesbycinthe7 жыл бұрын
Baqar Ali funny enough I remember growing up teammates always telling me back then to not give up baseline. I would get burned allowing them to go middle and they would blame me. I started using baseline as extra help and that would work way better. since then the baseline has been a great weapon to use against guys
@sammysammas3736 жыл бұрын
I think there's two schools of thought on that. The old school belief was that if you force the ball handler to the middle, you're forcing them to where the help defense is. Though the baseline can be used as an extra defender, if the ball handler goes around you baseline there's less of an opportunity for the help defense to arrive and the ball handler then has a clear path to the bucket. On the other hand, 3 point shooting has become such a big part of the game, especially in the NBA, that help defenders allow the person they're guarding to wait at the 3 point line for a wide open 3. So I think in high school and college when you are playing a team that isn't loaded with sharp shooters, forcing the ball handler to help defense in the middle is still a viable strategy.

Exactly. Send them to the wings where there’s less help, they’re further away from the basket and to possibly set them up into a trap like the North Carolina Tar Heels have done for years. They force players towards the sidelines and baselines to set up the trap and use the out of bounds lines as an extra defender.

It drains your morale. However if that happens I try to play hard every time and show my desire to win. At least I can work on my defense and offensive game even though I know my chances are slim to win. Plus, people can see it and that is why I always get picked up for games when they need players. When I see someone blowing by everyone and just shooting the lights out, I switch onto them and see if I can lock them down or run damage control. Maybe its because I've never been a scorer, since I usually played PF and C when I was in highschool, but I was undersized and usually overmatched, so instead of looking to score, I just locked down the other PF or switch onto the other team's top scorer and kept locked them down.

I think it'd be pretty similar (though would be cool to see). All the same principles apply, except you need to be even better at making the right reads and adjustments - playing closer up to make up for shorter reach, forcing players off of their preferred spots and paths (on and off ball), going for strips and deflections before they can use their size to finish, and just going harder at all times. Also, there are more times when you have to be willing to ask teammates for help in certain positions so you can make certain overadjustments, since you can't guard everyone straight up. Being quicker (lower center of gravity) and having a strong base also go a long way in making up for lack of length. Source: am a smaller defender

The best way to play D on a point guard is to take away the fastest dribble move and that’s the crossover. If their dribbling with the ball on your right at the top, get close, extend your right arm and force them left. They can’t crossover without getting poked, spins are predictable when they initiate because no one half spins at the top, and behind the backs are the only move they can do.

Curry's defense isn't super weak per say, he just looks super weak because he's a team with 2 of the leagues better defenders, plus he's usually up against super athletic pg's. Westbrook? If you are guarding a great ballhandler with quickness, force them baseline into the help defense. For those of you who think youre a good defender and youre the one thats reacting to what the ballhandler's giving you, thats not good enough to compete at the next level. You have to show aggression. Sitting back waiting to see what the ballhandler does isn't good defense.

Decent points but players need the requisite baseline athleticism to be able to do any of this. You ever hear coaches say "just slide your feet quicker"? Yeah there's a problem with that. The other guy is way more athletic and it doesn't matter how fast you try to slide your feet that's gonna be a blow by. You can have all the technique in the world. Without the quickness its all irrelevant
@ByAnyMeansBasketball8 жыл бұрын
RondoStyle9 Yeah, agreed, there is a baseline athleticism for the entire sport of basketball at high levels... so of course this will not be applying to someone that is unable to even come close to the competition athletically at their level.
@andreialexandruparfeni71298 жыл бұрын
RondoStyle9 Well, that's true, but you can defend well without being faster than your matchup. Igoudala did a great job against Lebron in the last 3 games of the 2015 Finals while not being bigger, quicker or stronger than him.
@josebatista29497 жыл бұрын
tteverywhere 97 iggy is pretty athletic and quick his lateral quickness and wingspan allowed him to lockdown lebron
@andreialexandruparfeni71297 жыл бұрын
jose batista I would say that Lebron was more athletic than Iggy.
@jamesbycinthe7 жыл бұрын
the way I c it the less quickness u have the more u have to focus on anticipation and discipline. there r quick guys who don't play good on ball defense cuz they lack the concentration to stay with a ball handler, so it should definitely work in favor of those with a speed disadvantage if they apply the right technique. I'm pretty quick on my feet and to be honest I have had some of the toughest times guarding guys who r more deceptive than quick. guys who know how to attack at the perfect time. usually really fast guys want to just blow by u and u can anticipate it easier and stay with them.

If you could make a part 2 for this but mainly for some drills and workouts you can do to improve these defensive techniques and skills that would be awesome. Keep up the great work bro love your videos!!

Where do you find those defense clips because all the lockdown defensive highlight reels just show steals and blocks not good defensive plays where they cut off a drive and force a bad shot or pass

You can't really teach defense. Defense is about desire. You have to want to lock the other player down.
@ByAnyMeansBasketball8 жыл бұрын
It's undoubtedly about desire. But if you don't think that fundamentals make you a great defender, then you're crazy. Smarts on defense is what truly differentiates good defenders!
@sam560948 жыл бұрын
Um , yes there are techniques to master the art of defense , such as learning the fundamentals of staying low and hands up, and working on you lateral foot movement, and strengthen of the lower body and ect, its just like any other part of the game , it requires time put into it and it is taught in whatever league you are in.

@giancarlocorrell58938 жыл бұрын
By Any Means Basketball I don't disagree with you about techniques that can make someone a sound defender, but you can't teach someone to be a lockdown defender. You don't think James Harden has the tools to be a great defender? He doesn't have the desire.
@mrslick588 жыл бұрын
Giancarlo Correll you can teach defense, maybe just not desire or effort

I know defense is important, but if we think carefully, every great defender has above average athleticism, dies it mean there's no hope for those who aren't athletic enough?
@andreialexandruparfeni71298 жыл бұрын
Isaac Wu Well, you can't be a great defender while being slow, but you can become good enough so that you are not a liability. Especially shot-blocking big men.
@unnwas7 жыл бұрын
Isaac Wu If you can't move like the other guy, just do not let him play comfortably. You will beat him with stress :D. And if you can't keep with him, switches the defenders :x

there are also athletic people with average defense
@killerdebit57097 жыл бұрын
Isaac Wu I agree, but not always true. Klay Thompson is not that athletic at all yet he just gives all his effort on D
@minhvu11846 жыл бұрын
Isaac Wu, If you are not fast or athletic, then just back up. I know that sounds weird, but watch Kawhi. His objective is mostly to just be in between his man and the basket, and tries not to give up anything easy

Thanks! this can really improve my defense because my friends say I reach a lot. But some of the time, I do get a steal. A lot of times people are quick enough to drive right pass me but I didn't know how to stop it until you said keep your hands active, pressure the defender, and getting around screens.

Defense almost comes naturally to me based on my football and martial arts background. A player can't change directions when you force them one way. But that's kinda a 'cheat' and players hate it when i do it.
@hamzah16943 жыл бұрын
what? what do you mean by chagning direction? and how is it a cheat for you?
@Vibestr3 жыл бұрын
@@hamzah1694 In causal pickup, a lot of guys get frustrated when you guard them like this. Hack is a better word than cheat. It's a hack cuz you defend smart without much effort. It's nonetheless a skill. You have to know what you're doing otherwise you'll give the offensive player a free path to the basket
@hamzah16943 жыл бұрын
@@Vibestr ohhh.. ok cool but it might not work evrytime some players fake their way or pullup fakes and stuff but its still a good technique to stop players

You get beaten with quick moves and steps if your focus is on the dribblers certain body areas. Your focus should be staying in front of the dribbler cutting off the angle to the basket - this takes away all their fancy moves 'cause you react to what they are doing laterally.
@sixo_ashton8 жыл бұрын
I hear what you're saying, and I'm not disagreeing with the tactic. My take on it is that it usually works on guys who rely on their shooting, and always look for shots over drives. A guy who can slash well will beat a hands up defence more times than it will stop him. With hands up defence, you are almost always off balance (esp. if you get attacked on the side with your hand up) and it takes a while to recover. I'd say as long as you close out well, and contest well, you don't need to play hands up defence. An active hand, bothersome active hands will counter all those jab moves the guy will try to get you off balance with. But hey, if you can move your feel well with your hand up on their face, I say keep doing it!

The lateral movements to absorb contact seem like such a small thing but that alone will instantly elevate any defender. As a 5'8" white dude who wrestles and has a broken jumpshot, I've never been a scorer, but I've always been able to lock it up in pickup games, even against much bigger matchups, because I do that.

@Rodrigo43918 жыл бұрын
no, just some for the youngins in the comments
@ShareefusMaximus7 жыл бұрын
I was going to leave a similar comment that WAS in response to the video. I don't think you should encourage reaching in, as it is only for advanced defenders. Most people are just going to wind up in foul trouble. Someone who is consistently winning spots and getting deflections can add a few stripping moves, but if reaching is NOT a change up, any good player will penalize the reaches they are expecting. "You reach. I teach ."
@tankbusta74367 жыл бұрын
Rodrigo4391 no with both. That saying comes from the truth that you have to move your feet to have your body absorb contact with offensive players instead of catching them with your hands (either player will get by you easily or reach in foul)
