Something that goes unnoticed by many while watching Sherlock is Martin Freeman's absolutely breathtaking acting. He's so very good at playing John Watson that no one ever really notices how it's acting, because he just fits the rule perfectly. Personally, it took me three times watching Sherlock to notice how John's standing position, walking position and running position resembles a solider. Whenever situation gets tight, John straightens his back and tenses his shoulders, almost like second nature. The Mary scene, where he said "But she wasn't supposed to be like that... Why is she like that?" genuinely shook me, because it's a hundred percent real; His voice, his face, the delivery of words. Benedict Cumberbatch is hella good in what he does, but simple fact is, without Martin Freeman, it would've been impossible for the show to have half the success it has.

Wonderful comment. And I totally agree with you. Although some people have described him as out of character in season 4 (Cheating on Mary, blamed Sherlock for her death, and beating his friend), I have always loved him. Like you said, a cool guy, really. Because after all he's gone through in his life he can finally be the man who he always want to be. And he is happy with Sherlock and Rosie. His live had changed since the day he met Sherlock, and I think John will always be grateful to him, that he gave his life a new sense, the sense that he will be still needed.

What I love from this TV show is that it doesn't fell into the same trap of other Sherlock Holmes shows where they use Watson as a bumbling sidekick. This show actually make him an important partner to Sherlock by being the knight while Sherlock is the strategist. Also they humanize him so much by using ptsd well
@porcusuxor6 жыл бұрын
What a wonderful tribute to my favorite character in the series. Your editing highlights what exactly people forget about John -- not only that he is a soldier and therefore has that sort of character, that capacity in him, but that everyone he had ever let in his life and his heart lied to him and treated him as if he did not deserve the truth. That, in itself, is a full keg of gunpowder that's ready to explode at the slightest provocation. And explode it did, unfortunately. I will, however, never forgive Gatiss and Moffatt for writing S4 in such a way that no one really remembered all of these reasons behind John's actions nor emphasized the complexity of his character, but treated him in the same way that everyone else in the show did: callously and without consideration of his feelings or context.
@eminapuskar70145 жыл бұрын
Can I get a hallelujah!?! For serious though. It makes me so angry and sad that everybody forgets these things. Altough it was extremely badly written as said these things should be taken into consideration.
@thecabbageman14 жыл бұрын
Didn't they? S4 John is the next logical step after all his previous development.
@forestgreenking4 жыл бұрын
@@thecabbageman1 It undermines everything with the overall development of the season. John's actions would "make sense" if you empathize with him greatly and you see that the frustration/anger/helplessness/hopelessness have been building. However, the story structure shows him wanting to become unfaithful (despite S1-S3 all about him being loyal, and accepting those wrongs) suddenly, getting angry and losing his emotions over Sherlock (a key point that the series sometimes forgets that he is an army doctor= you don't treat people like that; also blaming Sherlock). If the development is 'logical' then the story structure would've been like this: after S3/The Abominable Bride, John DOES become angrier/more impulsive to emotions, but lashing at Sherlock AND Mary. He becomes more expressive OR becomes more closed, and from the development he's had throughout S1-S3, it's becoming more expressive. It's not secretly texting someone else for 'not feeling it' anymore (from Sherlock or Mary); having a fight with them is more plausible. The purpose of cheating was to make him guilty, the brutal beatdown was to make him guilty, not being able to save Mary was to make him guilty. If it was along the season's development, then it would've been John getting angry at Sherlock because Sherlock isn't caring for himself anymore (drugs were the tipping point of John in TAB) AND angry at Mary for being a double-faced person who'd rather talk to Sherlock than him. Yes, texting someone was him wanting an out, and hitting Sherlock was also letting out his emotions, but he comes across as a cheater (later it's revealed he was being manipulated, than someone finding peace in another) and a high-strung bastard (the brutal beatdown shown was very unnecessary). S4E1 put him aside for Sherlock and Mary, and Mary died in the stupidest way possible. S4E2 John was trying to confront everything, but again: he was being manipulated by the secret sister (we don't even get that side of his again). S4E3 was so bad that it didn't even connect Eurus' situation with 'best friends' and Sherlock to John. Sherlock in S4 was massively god-like and full of emotions that he came out as a paragon of kindness and John came out as an asshole for opening his arms and accepting two people who wouldn't be accepted by others.
@thecabbageman14 жыл бұрын
@@forestgreenking I disagree with everything in your statement. First of all we know that Eurus isn't like Kilgrave. She doesn't just order people around with brainwashing waves. She slowly conditions them through dialogue. So even though she did probably feed off his anger in ep2 she definately didn't manipulate him into wanting to start texting her because they didn't talk much in the bus. Secondly once again Sherlock's explanation about why John chose Mary establishes that John is emotionally unstable and in desperate need of constant change. So cheating like that is a normal reaction As for that beating I think it was too brutal but that was the point. Both Sherlock and John needed that to happen to move on. And it doesn't ruin his character since the scene in Sherlock's house where Sherlock consoles him explains why he lashed out like that. And all of that is a normal reaction. John blames himself for Mary's death. He feels like he betrayed her. That he wasn't caring enough to protect her. Or who knows what else. Self loathing is normal in situations of such grief. And projecting that guilt onto someone else is also normal I do agree that the way she died was ridiculous though. Esecially after they spent an episode establishing how you can survive a bullet shot
@forestgreenking4 жыл бұрын
@@thecabbageman1 I've taken the beatdown to thinking, and yeah, it was in character, so I concede to that point. I think it really was super graphic for me to see from a character that I really like. I kind of equated it to Sherlock's mental/psychological abuse to John, and John retaliating in physicality. Still though. It was such a dissonant addition to the series it was like they WANTED us to hate John. And yeah, I know it was John's fault for the first step with 'the girl on the bus'. But that's what I meant; it was such a pivot from S3/S4's characterization of John, it seems out of the left field for me, and I imagine, a lot of people. I can recognize that feelings of distrust towards a partner, longing for love and understanding, wanting an out-- those are real and understandable sentiments that I will not fault for John to have, but the thing is, the season was structured so weirdly-- and his dialogue, especially-- that it insinuates that John wanted things to happen just because he's tired of Mary and misses Sherlock. The WHY is important, and the structure of how it is built is important. When I say Eurus manipulated him, it would've been massively service to his characterization to show us what exactly she did in order to lure him into the false sense of security she gives him. Eurus isn't Kilgrave but someone as emotionally calculating as her would've seen that John was emotionally compromised; and no, I don't think it was unintentional that they looked at each other on the bus and she just apparently targeted the one person OUTSIDE the Holmes family as her guinea pig. Also it worries me that you keep saying 'cheating is normal' for this circumstance, because no, it really isn't. He was never shown to double-time anyone, didn't contact any girl outside of another girl he's dating, and at the most, it's Sherlock that he communicates more with. But that's where his loyalty stands; Sherlock is the partner, he is loyal-- Mary is his partner, he stays loyal (and heart-wrenchingly so). He explains that who he is is someone he wants to be, not the person everyone perceives him as. That's a therapist's/psychologist's red flag, and no, as I say again, it is NOT a coincidence that Eurus takes his therapist. It sounds extremely like Impostor Syndrome, not feeling like you're the best, but I don't know why you equate thrill=cheating, because if he's searching for thrill, he could've just found other ways for that. Also, yeah, John says he wants more to happen between the girl and him. Again, WHY? Why did he want it? The audience is left hanging at that, especially "that's the whole point". Well, what's the whole point? That he felt stagnant so he wanted to cheat, he's not perfect and his wife is haunting him because he couldn't admit to others that he wanted to cheat? Sorry for the rants, I just-- I know what S4 was trying to say, and it would've been good (and good I say as I don't exactly like the direction they made John go, because again, there are more ways to create the guilt/thrill-seeking) if they just... fixed the story structure and added a few more scenes. This video is a testament to that; it shows his fears and character in a few minutes. The show repeatedly forgets that until convenient for Sherlock to dissect, so I hope that my opinion comes across.

it makes no sense for me to be angry with John, he was very hurt. Sherlock acted almost the same when he thought Irene had died. That beautiful embrace scene in TLD has sealed what this BBC show really means: the incredible friendship of these two men.
@OneAllysa7 жыл бұрын
dama de copas I was angry because since Season 1, I was already aware of the lurking violent anger within John (I've been good at detecting those) and I've been scared of the day that comes when John places his anger on Sherlock... I thought I was wrong about it when I watched Season Two because John had been awesome to Sherlock at those times... but after what Sherlock did to him? I get it. Sherlock did a dick move, but I was still scared of John actually using his fists against Sherlock (though I kinda understand the punches when Sherlock came back. He really deserved those lol). I wanna say tho... Sherlock didn't beat John up when Irene died, but I get what you mean. John is not the world's consulting detective. He is not the kind to show his emotions quietly like Sherlock. John is more expressive, and it just so happens that Sherlock was the easiest person to target the blame of Mary's death because Sherlock was there at the time of her death, as well as making a promise to keep her safe. I understood John's pain but I still feel a bit more disappointed now instead of angry. I've been more sympathetic with Sherlock. I relate to him more, to be honest-ostracised, isolated though in need of some forms of social contact, eccentric, and intimidating to some people (yes, people say that to me unfortunately)... and I've had friends who were John Watsons too... whom I've done everything for but only received a beating in the end. So, I was kinda quick to get angry at John, especially as I hoped that my impressions of him in Season 1 were wrong... that I had a feeling John will get more violent after more seasons but I hoped something happens that prevents John from finally snapping, releasing all those pent up anger he's always been hiding.
@queenheart61677 жыл бұрын
I understand. I had also noticed a kind of 'dark side of the force' in him already in season 1 when he expressed that in his 'bad days' he even killed people, but just as you, I have attached myself to the qualities of patience and loyalty which John also had, and which attracted me to him. I did not want Moffitis to have made John angry at Sherlock (although Sherlie exhausted everyone's patience, I do not like anyone hurting him). But the time John was faithful to Sherlock induced me not to be angry with him, but try to understand. And I'm glad that once it's all cleared up, that both heroes have forgiven themselves and apparently are going to 'heal', John and Sherlock have returned, already in the third episode, as they have always been before. John being his faithful squire, and Sherlock saving his friend in the end. In the end, love and friendship won, and if all is well between them, then it's fine with me. kisses, and great video!

OneAllysa I agree with you in the most that you've said. But I can't agree with the fact that Sherlock deserved to beaten up by John after the return from his "death". He had to live in the underground for two years to destroyed Moriarty's criminal network to keep his few friends save, including John. Sherlock was severely physically tortured by the Serbians short time before Mycroft came to save his brother. And then John punch him again. I understand John, he was angry for Sherlock, he must assumed his friend is dead for two years. Sorry, he had not deserved it, but we all know John how fast he gets angry. But just as fast he can forgive, we saw that later in the tube. That's my opinion about that.

How would that feel, eh?
@christinabeyer92984 жыл бұрын
@@aayushipriya0216 Disagree, 25 people of Sherlocks homeless network knew it, not 150, and of course Mollly. The only thing that Sherlock can be blamed for that he never told John why he really faked his death, not only to dismantle Moriarty's criminal network, he did it for the main reason to protect John and nothing else. And not to forget it was Moriarty himself who manipulated Sherlock to commit suicide when he suggested him: "Your friends will die if you don't." And of course Sherlock had to hide, he lived for two years certainly under false identities on several places in the world, everyone in a similar situation would have did the same. But it was at no case just a game of hide and seek. But of course I understand Johns reaction, except of the beating I would have react the same way like him.

It only took her 15 minutes to take over the warden and then her prison. Trust issues, indeed.

Thanks for the video, it's brilliantly edited. I've seen too many negative comments on John after season 4, which made me really sad. John is just broken because of everything happened to him, and he is such a great person in nature. How could they don't understand???
@sell87894 жыл бұрын
because they are superficial idiotic fans, who did not know how to understand the depth of the character. They thought he was made of kittens, but they forgot that kittens hiss and scratch from time to time

There's a reason why John and Sherlock get on how they do. They not only balance each other out, but they are more alike then either would care to admit. Sherlock is softer and more human then he'd like to admit, and John is crazier and colder then he'd like to admit. And they both get high on danger in the end.

Despite the title "Sherlock", the main character is John Watson. The best characterization of Watson ever, and stunningly artfully delivered.
@AnOldYoungPerson5 жыл бұрын
I feel like they downplayed John's military career in the show and it's what caused him to be the way he is in the story and his character arc I'm Sherlock, and it's a shame because it was a very important part of him and his personal story in the novels and the reason he has a limp and walked with a cane. (Due to him being a medic in the Second Afghan war and taking a Jazzel bullet to the leg, but in Sherlock for the modern version of the shoe, he was injured in the Afghanistan war.) in the novels is because he was shot in the leg during his service in the Second Afghan War. Where as his leg injury in the modern War on Terror in the Afghanistan campaign, that kinda links to the novels with the only link being in Afghanistan but both wars are around 180 years apart. But it's all the way he was injured in the series was just explained in a dream sequence rather than amount the detail Conan Doyle goes into in the books and his past military career from Jim graduating and university to become a doctor to joining the military. The writers for Sherlock also didn't understand, that Watson's military career was what made him and defined him as a man and a character, it was the reason he was so regimented with his life and his actions in the books and choices he made for himself or for Sherlock or for Mary to save them, to comfort them or to assist them in any way possible. And the meer fact that in the series they only speak about Watson's military past, in passing remarks rather than a full blown conversation or Watson writing about it on his blog, is waisted potential to develop Watson's past. (Also I know they went into his military backstory in the Abominable Bride episode, but that was technically a flashback to 1898/Sherlock's mind palace and was a spin-off adaptation of Conan Doyle's work so it doesn't count.) And to try and divulge his mentality as a soldier in a criminal and crime fighting world trying to survive with the most unlikely of friends. Also I don't understand, why Watson didn't wear his Military uniform for his own wedding in the series as it is a big inaccuracy, Major Sholto did it so why didn't John? It might have been that only active servicemen are to wear uniforms for formal occasions, but that's kinda like when retired veterans wear their uniforms for remembrance Day, it doesn't make sense. (They did got that detail semi right in the Guy Richie movie so why not the TV series?!)
@iangow-robinson96714 жыл бұрын
perhaps that is the objective ? Military career means so much to the individual but civilians will never understand the change and stresses. The prison that a servicemen carries with them and there bubble of lies of being a nations pride. When reality is far different an inability to adjust and cope with civilian life, trained to spot dangers in everything, always alert, inability to switch off and loss of purpose. Comes across as hostile, difficulty sleeping as every time they close there eyes they see the horrors of war on a constant loop and more screams than you could possibly count. The frank indifference of the nation I believe is well portrayed in this movie and correct about missing war, many veterans miss it. People are scared to have an open conversation with a veteran, only getting a forethought by a majority of public on remembrance day even then it's only a performance to keep up the pretence. The fact of the matter a majority of the UK population do not care about there servicemen, women and especially veterans as it's easier to choose forget that we send 18 year olds of to war and are only to happy to brush them aside and marginalise them. Pride and perhaps anger, I know of service men to whom injured themselves to avoid disgracing the unit with bad marching during a returning parade. Perhaps it's the same with his limp. Anger at the way the military has abandoned him, he is out and military no longer cares about him. People romanticise military service and the treatment of veterans sadly after Vietnam all that changed, people are more happy to forget the exist. The contrast suits the eras they belong to.

I think they understood, but I think they wanted a different interpretation. They threw in some vices for John, like how he's gone on a string of dating so many women as a form of escapism, and not even just to find The One. He can't even remember names. They added alcohol. They added a therapist. They added infidelity. Sherlock's John is a far cry from regimented Dr. Watson.

2:24 Hearing Sherlock say some affirming things about John's relationship after Mary's death was everything a best friend could do to help rationalize John's choices. We know nothing of the future or certain truths. This did John Watson a lot of service. He's a dynamic character with his own vices and poor decisions. Seeing characters struggle with their mistakes and conflicts within Sherlock brought it closer to home.
