From what I have seen and read about him, he refused to enlist during WW2. John Ford thought he was a coward. He was also known for being a mean nasty alcoholic. He played heroes in the movies, but didn't live up to the rep.

Stop spreading hateful misinformation. He tried to enlist and neither was he a mean, nasty alcoholic. Everybody who met him said he was one of the nicest men in Hollywood, had great manners and never behaved badly, even against people with other political opinions like Kirk Douglas or Paul Newman. That's something we lost today, at least today's left can't do it. And there were several reasons, like old injuries from college sports and movie stunts, which contributed to him not serving. The biggest was that the studio boss of Republic threatened to sue him for everything he owned if he broke his contract. Back then, if your medical examination deemed you unfit, like Wayne's, you needed the permission of your employer to serve. John Wayne tried to enter the OSS but they didn't want him because he was too famous. These circumstances haunted him for the rest of his life.

That is a lot to unpack. I don't think the indigenous people were selfish, but l look at North America now and l think what an amazing world we would have missed if all that underdeveloped and sparsely inhabited land had not reached its full potential. My family lived in a communist country for decades. When the curtain fell and they were allowed to leave my Aunt's words inspired me to avoid the Marxists at all costs. His wives were all pretty, but its hard to find wedded bliss in Hollywood. For years l thought John Wayne's role as Ghengis Khan was an insane choice. It's nice l'm not alone.

I have massive respect for Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart, Clint Eastwood and Sir Michael Caine for their service in the forces and in conflicts, but there are a few like John Wayne who talk the talk but hypocritically walk the walk.

I grew up watching John Wayne. I always liked how his children were in films with him. He may have been married 3 times but all his children have done everything they can to honor their father. So he was a great father and I hope people look at that as well as the rest of his life. I know plenty of actor and actress that have cheated on partners, married multiple times but that does not affect their movies! It should not affect John’s either. He has a lot of good movies out there.

He was a draft dodger and not due to age he filed for a 3-A exemption claiming to be the sole provider for a family of 4. He was only in his early 30s during the war and they took men up to 40. He was concerned he would be to old adter serving. His draft status got changed mid war to 1-A fit for service but he got the movie studio to intervene on his behalf . Clark Gable and Jimmy Stewart despised him as a coward and the shame of being a coward resulted in him becoming a super patriot later in life.

It’s interesting that he could defend someone for being gay yet also tried to defend his country for the lies and deceit that was done to the true indigenous people of what is now called america. A lesson I quickly learned was never trust a yank after spending time in that country though the indigenous people were great people to talk to full of interesting stories my heart certainly goes out to them. The African Americans complain about their treatment but they still have a country that they can at least go back to while the Indigenous had theirs stolen from them and I am certain if the US could of wiped them out they would of done. They hunted the Buffalo to near extinction because they knew it was the staple food for most tribes plus the other uses they had for the skin. Just remember as the indigenous people say Americans speak with a fork tongue. The US might of been on the same side as Great Britain in WW2 but England still had to pay them 7.5 billion dollars. John Wayne made billions of dollars for Hollywood - tens of billions in modern day money. I don't think his era gives a rats butt about what the modern era thinks of him. I grew up with John Wayne on every Sunday afternoon. He was a hero in the minds of millions. Like everyone, he was a flawed a human being, and probably suffered more heartache and pain due to his fame. He didn't die a rich man by Hollywood standards, and in fact had a rather modest estate considering his contribution to the movie industry.

The only movie that he made that I really liked was "The Quiet Man" with Maureen O'Hara and Barry Fitzgerald. One of my favorite. Otherwise he was cast in stereotypical roles in the rest of his movies. On his death, he made a bit of a name for himself for medical reasons for the very large amount of waste matter that was contained in his intestines.

You both don't know his work, obviously. He was a good actor and character actor too. There are reasons why the greatest directors chose him for partly very complex character roles. No other actor, no Brando or Newman, could have played Ethan Edwards in The Searchers. I've seen and read almost everything about him and I tell you that this opinion is just a strange prejudice that has survived the reality. He was overlooked for an Oscar (nomination) five times: They Were Expandable, Red River, The High And The Mighty, The Searchers and The Shootist.

Why Wayne didn’t serve in WWII is much more complicated than just being too old to serve. Jimmy Stewart was 1 year younger and flew 20 actual combat missions in WWII. He would have flown more if he had been allowed to. Clark Gable was 7 years older and also flew several combat missions in WWII. Hitler actually put a bounty on both Gable and Stewart, so they were limited in flying combat. Ah, but Wayne and all the others I mentioned suffered from being human. Like all of us, they had their good, bad and ugly. On many occasions, Wayne went out of his way to perform acts of kindness. As with so many of us, Wayne improved with age as a human being. It’s fallacy to look only at the negative of anyone’s life and feel superior.

Many celebrities like Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, John Wayne and others were asked not to serve as their contributions in entertainment were seen as being more valuable. Wayne had 4 children at 34 years of age when the war began making him ineligible for the draft. Can’t be a draft dodger if you weren’t eligible. Wayne was classified as 3-A, again not a draft dodger. Wayne also had serious back problems and, in spite of this, it is documented that he did try to get into John Ford’s filming unit that came under pretty severe fire during the Battle of Midway. As I said, it’s more complex than just _____. Do the research before making snap judgments.
