JOHN WAYNE (1907 - 1979) was a tough, affable, generally unequaled American leading man of action films who after a slow start, became one of the best known and most successful actors in Hollywood.
Marion Mitchell Morrison known professionally as John Wayne and nicknamed Duke, was an American actor, filmmaker, and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient. He was among the top box office draws for three decades. Wayne's enduring status as an iconic American was formally recognized by the U.S. government in the form of the two highest civilian decorations. On May 26, 1979, he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. Hollywood figures and American leaders from across the political spectrum, including Maureen O'Hara, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Mike Frankovich, Katharine Hepburn, General and Mrs. Omar Bradley, Gregory Peck, Robert Stack, James Arness, and Kirk Douglas, testified to Congress in support of the award. (Wikipedia)
MERV GRIFFIN (1925 - 2007) was an American television show host and media mogul. He began his career as a radio and big band singer who went on to appear in film and on Broadway. From 1965 to 1986, Griffin hosted his own talk show, The Merv Griffin Show. He also created the internationally popular game shows Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune through his television production companies, Merv Griffin Enterprises and Merv Griffin Entertainment. In 1974, Griffin was inducted to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1998, a Golden Palm Star on the Walk of Stars in Palm Springs was dedicated to him. In 2005, he accepted the degree Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) from the National University of Ireland, Galway, and in 2008, he was posthumously inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.

He was a wonderful actor, but more a genuine, honest and humble man who loved his family. I recently went to Ft Worth and the John Wayne American Experience. I came away from there knowing so much more about his life. My admiration only grew bigger after seeing this exhibit. I highly recommend visiting this, if anyone finds themselves in Ft. Worth Texas !

On a moto trip, I turned left and had to find his birthplace in Winterset, Iowa. It isn't 'wow' like Graceland, but it is awful cute. There is a very well run museum/giftshop for fans, downtown. He lived the American Dream = born in the Mid-West, raised in California. I love his movies, and it made me feel a little more connected to his legend.

@@rivaridge7211 ...& yet still wore lifts...according to Robert Mitchum. Duke must have wanted to look monumental. The ten-gallon hat made him look almost 7 ft tall! Even tiny stars like Cagney & Bette Davis seemed larger than life, in attitude & spirit, in those days...

@@philiphalpenny3783 True, but as you get older your spine bends a little and some of the cartilage disappears. I'll never be 5'10" again, but I don't have to be big; Wayne was expected to be every bit of 6'4".
@juliebless7119
@juliebless7119 Жыл бұрын
@@philiphalpenny3783 Mitchum said that to be funny, not factual. They were good friends. You don't look the size he looked when he was sitting down due to having lifts in your shoes. He is wearing dress shoes, no lifts here. Marty Allan was ~5'4" and Merv was 5'8". Using their heights as reference points, Wayne is 6'4", believably. Like all other cowboy boots of that time, when he wore cowboy boots, they were high heeled. Low heeled boots are not recommended for safe riding.

Playboy had a way of making John Wayne look bad. He was very knowledgeable about politics which prompted his remarks about Blacks in politics. At that time there were few Black poiticians on the national scene. Of course Duke was not preudice or racist. He worked with people of every nationality. I have seen photo's of him in Viet Nam with his arm around Black soldiers. Not the actions of a Racist.

Not defending his comments, just the man. The Playboy Int. has to be set in context. He was a man with opinions. Doesn't make him a bad man. In fact, thousands of people- black, white, brown and otherwise- will tell you how fair, honest, and kind he was in person. Does that count for something?

Merv lusted after Wayne. I mean lusted. I think Wayne is an amazing western actor. But sadly he had a lot of stinkers. Stagecoach and Red River is an amazing picture. Wayne was absolutely wonderful in these two movies. Award winning! I never ever get tired of watching him in these movies. He really benefited from John Ford and Montgomery Cliff being part of his acting life. The only movie I liked Dean Martin in was with Wayne Rio Bravo. Martin was fabulous in that movie as was Walter Brennan.

It's funny that Merv mispronounced Ronald Reagan's name as "Ronald Reegan" - not uncommon back in the day. Later in life, Merv would become quite close to the couple, and to Nancy Reagan especially, and (no doubt!) he never mispronounced the Reagan name again.
