The planning sequence is one of the best parts of this movie because it shows how John typically operates on a job, and the coded dialogue between John and the sommelier is just awesome. Plus, once you see how the mission plays out, you realize that John bought the rifle and the shotgun not for the job itself, but because he expected to be betrayed and attacked in the sewers.

Ya I loved that part! You really see John in his element & his skill planning a job. He wasnt even surprised in the catacombs, he's ready for anything!

Honestly, the equipment he chose was more in line with "hope for the best. Plan for the worst." He was thinking ahead with his placement, more as a "have it and not need it" in case he was discovered. As a member of the high table, he knew she would be protected. He hopes to get in and out without discovery. However, he won't leave anything to chance. So, he strategic leaves himself a path of least resistance and stocked supplies.

One of those impressive little references of these movies, Gianna slitting her wrists in the bath was a traditional way to go out among ancient Roman aristocrats, often to avoid dishonnour. Its similar to the Japanese seppuku. Its thematic for her character.

See, what makes John Wick so devastating is his almost Superhuman Endurance. Others may be as good of a fighter as he, like Cassian, but you have to remember that Cassian was fresh, while John had already been through dozens of grueling fights. He is about as tireless as a human can be.

Probably the funniest part of the shootout sequences in all three movies is John shooting a goon in the leg or chest, they start to get back up and he shoots them in the head. Dude, he told you to stay down, a five minute break or something.

Fun fact: The 'John Wick 2' poster which depicts John encircle by people who are all pointing handguns at his neck is an homage a famous photo of Col. Anthony Joseph Drexel Biddle encircled by Marines pointing bayonets at his neck. Drexel was legendary for his combative skills and pioneered bayonet and hand to hand combat training in the United States Marine Corps. There's an action movie trope of a martial arts teacher giving a student a weapon and telling them to try to kill them then handily defeating the student to demonstrate the effectiveness of the teacher's fighting system (or the toughness of the teacher). Drexel used to do that in real life.

Great reaction Jen! I especially liked your point about nuanced characters in John Wick Chapter 2. The movie also expands on the idea of possible "honor amongst thieves", established in the first movie when John kindly suggests that Francis "take the night off" rather than killing him and Marcus refuses to kill John despite a $2M contract. In this movie there are several examples - John leaves the knife in Cassian's aorta as a "professional courtesy" rather than killing him outright, Laurence Fishburne's character as the Bowery King spares John's life despite a $7M contract, and Winston gives him an hour before the excommunicado begins. Interesting and thought-provoking stuff! I can't wait to see your reaction to John Wick Chapter 3 - Parabellum. Another movie you should add to your reaction list is "Meet Joe Black" with Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, and Claire Forlani. It's a love story with a twist. Keep doing what you're doing. You're a natural!
@jenmurrayxo2 жыл бұрын
Thank you John for your kind encouragement! Yes I'd say a huge theme of these movies is honor amongst thieves for sure! You’re not alone, I too liked this one a bit better than the first. I believe the first just had a lot of shock value. The execution of the fight/gun scenes. (No pun intended.) Now that we all know what a John Wick movie is capable of producing, we can actually dive into the nuisances like character development and camera work of the film. And of course Ruby Rose playing a bad A$$ per usual. I also like how Ian McShane’s character “Winston” is portrayed as more of a father figure than just an acquaintance in this one. McShane is good in just about anything he does. My favorite role of his is in the HBO series “Deadwood.” Since you like “Firefly”, I think you’ll like it too. Over 5k now! Woot Woot!

The ending breaks the series for me. John could have found a way to kill Santino while not breaking the rules and the ENTIRE population of Central Park NY visitors being part of Continental is BS.
