The Director is on record as saying - "Yes, it was a cheesy, nasty, brutal start to the movie. But with what John was going to do in the film, it was the best way to drag the audience along cheering for him as he slaughtered EVERYONE."

Maybe so...but it was still really well-executed and was radically effective. A plot-device like that is really easy to fuck up or misuse. It happens all the time, with far lesser stakes. This could've gone horribly wrong if done improperly. But they pulled it off magnificently.

This movie is a masterclass in both action choreography and in storytelling. Chad Stahelski was one of the main stuntmen working with Keanu in The Matrix series, before directing this. His attention to detail reinvented the action scene and created the John Wick style of combat. The story telling is remarkable, built on a direct, minimalist script and a focus on world building using "show, don't tell." The different details and concepts of this world having an organized, underground crime world is carefully shown by the characters just living in it, and it is up to the viewer to figure out the context. Using gold coins as a currency built on favors or services, using dialog like "dinner reservations" with no explanation, the matter of fact conversation between John and the policeman... all of this makes the viewer that much more invested in the viewing. My favorite example is the limited exposition explaining the Continental as a safe haven. The idea is laid out briefly, then we see Willem Dafoe fire a shot to warn John, but he doesn't shoot Ms. Perkins... because he CAN'T. You can kill someone to defend yourself in the Continental, but he wasn't at risk, so if he shot her, he would violate the rules. The dog he picked at the end was scheduled to be put down the next day. The scene of him walking off with the dog at the end is the same spot he and his wife were at when she collapsed at the start.

This comment is so interesting, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge of the story. We both truly went into this basically blind and I have to say - personally, this concept of the ‘criminal underworld’ is the most gripping part! I am so intrigued and excited to see more exploration of that. Danny is more of a fan than I am (Niamh) of action-style movies, but I have been blown away by the world-building that has been so subtly introduced in this first movie. I think it’s safe to say we are both VERY excited to see more of John Wick and his world. Thank you for your support!! ❤️

@@CoyzyMovieNight What'll really blow your mind about the hotels...is that part of the reason for their rules isn't just because criminals need a safe haven to chill. It's because they act as a front of legitimacy for all the criminal stuff that goes on. Like a bridge where the "normal" world and the criminal world can exchange goods and services. After all, it's not like they have their own power and water and such. They still use real civil services, and have to pay real money legitimately for them. The result of that, is that the hotels aren't JUST for the criminals...they are in fact for everyone. Normal people stay there too, which is part of the reason for the rules. What that means...is that a sufficiently wealthy family on a vacation could have their kids running and playing through the halls of a building full of the world's deadliest killers...and yet be safer there than they would be even in their on damn home. Which is just mind-blowingly ironic.

Just as ‘Dinner Reservation’ was code for clean up, John Wick spared Francis the doorman security guard, because he gave John the code word for how many gunmen were protecting Iosef inside. The weight he lost is the number of gunmen inside. Always makes me wonder, if Viggo could have avoided all this if he had swallowed his pride and apologized, grovelled and begged for his son’s life. Or at the very least, promised to get his car back for him…The incredible Swedish actor Michael Nyqvist who played Viggo, sadly passed away about 6 years ago from lung cancer. RIP.

You did what I’ve done, what my brothers and friends have done. The ‘what if’s’ or ‘if only’, in certain moments of the story. The alternative scenarios increasing with each sequel. John Wick is more than just an action film. It is almost Shakespearean in its tragedy. Whatever alternative scenarios we came up with it always comes back to that incredible scene with Viggo: “The way you got out, lying to yourself. That the past held no sway over the future. In the end, the lot of us are rewarded for our misdeeds…This life follows you. Clings to you. Infecting everyone who comes close to you. We are cursed, you and I.” All the characters aware that they are bound to their fates.

The director for this movie was one of the stunt men Keanu worked with on the matrix movies and they wanted to make it as much about the action as possible. They kept the plot simple and didn't go dialogue heavy for the exposition so the movie just let's John wick show you who he is after the quick story Viggo told his son, thereby redefining the action movie genre in the process
@redthorne1129

It's interesting to look at the way they really relate the viewer to the character in this movie. Usually it's a lot of exposition, scenarios that feel familiar, we can relate to...but in this movie, it's very jarring. My favorite example...the dog's death lingers with the viewer more than it would in most movies because of the hard cut to the shovel going into the ground. It's just as unceremonious and abrupt as John being knocked out and waking up to his dog dead. The action does so much talking in this movie, but it's easy to overlook the editing and cinematography in general that just amplifies the effect of everything as well 😀

Personally I think 3 scenes are very important for the film: 1. The dead puppy: we are emotional invested for John. 2. The reaction of Aurelio: we don't know John, but now we know he must be some badass or at least a good person a friend would punch an important criminal for. 3. The reaction of the father (especially the "Oh.": now we know to 100 % he is a guy even the really dangerous guys don't want as an enemy. Of course the movie has a lot of other great and smart scenes, but this three are the core imo.

Viggo, "the bad guy" - aka the 'final boss', aka "Theon's" dad, is played by Mikael Nyqvist, a swedish actor. He's always been a great actor. Sadly he's no longer with us, as he passed away in 2017(lung cancer) at the age of 56. He was my favorite in this movie next to Keanu. Several things. Keanu Reeves trained over 400 hour with Taran Butler of Taran tactical. A expert at 3gun combat style shooting sport. So everything you is proper gun handling. Including the 3 shots two in the chest one in the head. The conversation between Wick and Francis. According to Kevin Nash who played Francis. The amount of weight he said he lost was code fir how many men were inside waiting for Wick. Which is why Wick says "Impressive" I believe John doesn't want to kill Yosef in the bath house. He's installing fear into him. Making his remaining time hell. The dog kennel at the end is at a international shipping port. So the kennel is a quarantine for animals being brought into the US which requires a two week holding policy. This way illnesses like mad cow disease do not come in and sweep through the US animals

This is also being used in the military forces around to world too. VERY cool way to again show us how much of a badass and how respected John Wick is. Also thee one thing I like about Keanu Reaves is the amount of effort he puts into a role. You can find videos of his training sessions for these movies where he spends countless time at a gun range training with all sorts of guns to the point where he knows how each gun he handles will behave IRL and will actually handle them accordingly for things like checking to ensure the weapons are not jammed. You will see him handle a pistol in the second John Wick movie where he will kinda toss the gun in his hand a little to press down on the chamber because the pistol he is using at that time is known for having bullets getting jammed and is checking the chamber to make sure it is clear enough to fire. Keanu also went through 4 months of training, 5 days a week, 8 hours a day to bring his character to life. He also went through Judo, Japanese Ju-Jutsu, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. So Keanu is that accurate and deadly in real life. You can find a few videos of his trainings with a company known as Taran Tactical. Keanu also had help from former Navy SEAL and CIA Contractor Shawn Ryan. Interesting thing about Marcus (Willem Dafoe) , he asked Vigo if the contract is open or exclusive. Then Vigo replied it's open, because it needed to be done fast. A open contract means EVERYONE in the world will try to kill John Wick, meaning there is no reason for Marcus to betray John or try to put his own life in danger. An exclusive contract means there is just a certain people a.k.a assasins, best ones in the world, probably around 10-15 people trying to hunt him down.

People miss this detail. Viggo's idea was to lure John to Marcus's house, where Perkins would ambush and kill John. But they didn't account for the hotel to interfere. The hotel lobby instead called and lured Perkins away, to her death, thus saving John's life, and afterwards Winston supplied the info about Viggo's location to John. Viggo wasn't being stupid by calling John, to tell him about Marcus.

His car is actually a 1969 Mustang Mach 1. They just put the 429 trim on it. A real 429 boss is WAY too expensive to run through them like this movie does. Less than 900 were made in 1969. Perkins conducted business on Continental grounds. Bad ju-ju. The Continental manager takes care of these infractions. You have to admit, the old man went down fighting. Body count for John Wick in this movie. 77 on screen kills.

When John is talking to Francis outside the club, he asks Francis how much weight he had lost. Francis responded by saying 27 kgs in Russian, which is roughly 60 pounds. There were 27 guards in the club watching Viggo's son. I've heard from some people that the actor accidentally said 20 kgs probably due to a mistranslation of the Russian words, but he meant to say 27 kgs.

The director of this movie is a stunt man. He was Keanu's stunt man in the Matrix series. Keanu trained hard for around a year, you can see some of the clips of him working at Taran Tactical. Keanu's skills allowed them to shoot wide shots with a long duration and very few cuts because he was good enough to make that work. (it is almost a dance)

The lady at the continental hotel is not double jointed. If properly trained in the art of escape, anyone would be able to do that. They would practice dislocating their thumbs and the more the do it, their ligaments would stretch enough to where they can do it and put it back easily without pain.

An ancient order called Assa-sins used to accept only gold as payment (weight in gold) for their services such as espionage, murder, or counterintelligence. It adds to the believability of the movie since there is precedence in real history. Some even argue that this is the origin of the Beggars Guild in China's past as well as the Ninja of Japan. If I may add a personal note, people who do work in military, intelligence and kill or capture squads must keep their feelings firewalled so they don't get in the way of what must be done.

The officer (Charlie I think?) who saw the body in John’s house, asked him if he was working again, then politely wished him a good night before leaving is by far the smartest character in the movie Edit: Scratch that, Francis is up there too. When offered a ‘night off’ by John, he thanks him and leaves without another word, and I think gives him a coded warning on how many guards are in there (if I remember correctly the amount of weight he said he lost when converted to kg is 27kg, which is how many guards are in the red circle)

They didn't just kill his dog (who happens to be literally the cutest beagle that has or ever will exist in this universe), they destroyed the last token of his dead wife's love and devotion to him. They destroyed her sole dying wish that he still have love and goodness in his life. They basically figuratively murdered his wife, all over again right in front of him, WHILE he was still grieving her real physical loss.

One thing a lot of people miss is the cop's reaction...yes, the cops know exactly who John Wick is and what he does (or rather, what he used to do), hence the "Uhh...you workin' again?" question. They also know that, being retired, he's not going to do anything to anyone who doesn't deserve it, so if there's dead bodies in John Wick's house they came after him and they got what they deserved...and they ALSO know that there's no way they could stop him, so it's best to just keep themselves out of his crosshairs and leave him the hell alone.
