In this clip, gave his take on the MoNique-Netflix situation saying that he doesn't believe she approached the situation correctly. Witherspoon said her tirade didn't accomplish anything but further isolation and that her Academy Award doesn't hold the weight she thinks it does in the comedy world.
Later on, John Witherspoon talked about comedians having writers, Robin Williams stealing jokes, and names the funniest comedians off camera.

@Psalm 139 Monique's issues with Netflix don't appear to be valid. She expected to get paid the same amount of money as people who appeal to a way larger audience than she does, as a comedian. She even tried to use an award she won, years ago as a _dramatic actress,_ to justify why she should be paid more for her _comedy special._ Did she maybe deserve more money? It's possible. All negotiations surrounding compensation are subjective to a degree. But to compare herself to people who are actively drawing larger crowds, while she regularly plays relatively smaller venues and hasn't had a comedic role in years that justifies her ask, then blame it on racism when those arguments don't hold up, is disingenuous. Was she onto something? Sure, that's how hijacking an issue works. However, just because black women experience systemic racism and sexism doesn't mean that every single roadblock they face comes down to that. And don't think that just because I'm a man I'm not incapable of understanding. Otherwise you're no better than those who refuse to look past your gender when you try to make a valid point. I admittedly have not had the female experience, but I'm aware enough to call a spade a spade. And that's all I'll say.
@raym.778
@raym.778 4 жыл бұрын
@Psalm 139 I'm not even a fan of Amy, especially after the joke stealing allegations, but Amy Schumer's audience is way larger than Monique's and, as a comedian, Amy Schumer was relevant and actively had jobs in her industry around the time of her special. Her audience for her movies, shows, and stand-up can be used to estimate how well her special would do. What did Monique have? Didn't she star in another dramatic movie around that time? And then there's her stand up, but who in the media really talked about that until she started calling out Oprah & Lee? I mean, Amy Schumer regularly plays at venues like the Paramount Theater (capacity 3664), while Monique regularly plays at places like Nyack Levity Live (capacity 400). And who knows how regularly they tour and any variation in the capacity of the venues they play along the way, that only further complicates things. That the two are even being compared is nonsense. Amy Schumer in this era is in a whole other league commercially. Her audience is large enough for her to demand millions because companies can count on her making that money back. Can we say the same for Monique? No. Like I said there were probably ways for Monique to negotiate upwards, but she hadn't done anything, as a comedian, in a while. You can even go to some of her old stand-up videos and read people saying they forgot she even did stand up. Nobody forgot Amy Schumer did stand up. Netflix is going to pay based on how much money they think they can get off her name. If I was an executive at Netflix I'd pay Monique more money to star in a dramatic role than do a comedy special. That seems to be where she has excelled most recently. But otherwise she's not as much of a draw as a Schumer, Chappelle, or Rock as a comedian. So, why would anyone compensate her in a way that is comparable to any of them?
@raym.778
@raym.778 4 жыл бұрын
@Psalm 139 I'm already aware that the venue Amy plays is 9 times larger hence why I commented that we don't know the frequency of the venues they play, the variation of sizes in between, and also noted that Amy has other projects outside of stand up that were relevant and more recent than Monique. Furthermore, while you or I don't have any idea the specific formula Netflix uses to calculate how much they pay people, they've hinted they try to figure out how much of an audience a special is going to draw. If that's the case it's easy to see why comedians like Schumer make so much more money than what was offered to Monique. She's far more relevant and far more likely to recoup the money spent on her because she's actively doing things that demonstrate how many people she can draw. And as far as white comedians not being given opportunities based on their "latest genre" of work. That's has nothing to do with my point. My point is that if you had to figure out how much money either would bring in for a comedy special, Amy's recent work speaks for itself in terms of her ability to draw a crowd. When did Netflix take Amy's _entire body of work into account?_ They don't seem to take anyone's _entire body of work_ into account. They do indeed seem to go by now much they think their name will draw. And there's various ways of trying to figure that out. Amy, Chappelle, and Rock had been active enough to prove what they could do. Chappelle had sold out Radio City Music Hall, like, what? 6 times and had been touring around that. Plus his show is still wildly popular and I'm sure it still does well on streaming platforms. You can even look at someone like Eddie Murphy. He's a little harder to suss out, but being that he's coming out of retirement, and had a legendary career as a stand up and comedian he's going to draw way more than Monique ever would. People still talk about his specials and companies can literally see how well they're selling on various platforms. What does Monique have to really fall back on? Where's her leverage? Her specials don't have the same reverence, The Parkers is still beloved by many, but hardly compares to something like the Chappelle Show, and the only thing she was doing comedy related was her stand-up in which she draws well, but not in the league of comedians who were paid way more than her. Otherwise, she had been busy making waves outside of comedy and a special by her was not highly anticipated by a large audience. So why wouldn't there be a huge disparity between her and Schumer? Why not be paid 26 times more ? Because your argument seems to be that it seems too high of a difference, all while ignoring that there's a _huge_ difference in drawing ability and visibility of both comedians. Amy has had projects built entirely around just her and can use them to demonstrate her drawing ability. What did Monique have? Monique hasn't demonstrated that she would be able to draw an audience anywhere close to Schumer's for a comedy special. Monique's career, as a comedian, stalled over a decade ago. She does very well, but she's not in the league of Amy Schumer commercially. Monique hasn't had any notable comedic project that drew a mass audience in a very long time. Schumer has had plenty. That's the point. Monique, at some point, became known more for her talk show and dramatic roles than for her comedy. So, for her to then go back to comedy and expect to be in a ballpark of someone who was relevant and has an audience that far exceeds hers is nonsense. If she started comparing herself to other comedians who kind of weren't doing much related to comedy outside of stand up, and regularly played venues that seated ~400 people, and we found out she was offered far less for a special than them, then she'd have a case. But instead she compared herself to someone who's drawing ability is incomparable. So you can talk about your degrees and what you regularly study, but that doesn't link back to the case with Monique and Netflix. Who's a more comparable comedian commercially that had a special on Netflix and was offered far more than Monique? What projects old or new or could we use from Monique, to predict how well Monique's special would sell? Does she have a comedy special that's doing well on a streaming platform or selling well in stores? Has she been in a comedic role in a major project that is still selling well to this day? What do we have to go off of here? Because otherwise you're just arguing that it's "too high" in the absence of evidence. Meanwhile Amy's demonstrated her drawing ability in various ways recently while Monique has not. And that's what gives her the leverage to demand higher compensation. Edit: I just searched for her special Play Music you can tell she doesn't even have anyone watching out for her on platforms like that. It's buried under the work of someone else with the same name. So it's hard to find even if you spell her name correctly. And guess what that does? That takes away from views she could be getting, which she could then use as leverage to get paid more. There's just so much wrong with how she's being handled and the decisions she's made I could write a damn book.

@Psalm 139 Your college education is irrelevant if you're not actually privy to any more information regarding the disagreement between Netflix and Monique than anyone else. It's not like you brought up any concepts that anyone isn't familiar with. Just because you have a degree in something doesn't mean you don't still have to actually argue your point or provide rationale. There's plenty of questions you can't answer to even begin to justify your position. And you can argue "It's sexist" all you want but that's a pathetic cop-out. Arguing that of two women, one received considerably higher compensation due to the fact they recently demonstrated they can draw a much larger audience is hardly sexist. You're racist for thinking that it is. That last line is sarcasm in case you didn't pick up on it. I'm not sure if they covered that in any of your classes. Edit: And you claimed white actors were given offers based on their entire body of work. Right? The point was Netflix doesn't seem to just say "Oh hey you've done this throughout your career so we're going to give you *x* amount of dollars." They don't seem to just pay people based on their body of work. Every person that Monique was compared to was active _and/or_ their past works were still making money *now.* So your point is moot unless you can demonstrate how Netflix paid someone based merely on their body of work. Monique doesn't appear to have any past body of work that is selling well now and she currently isn't doing much outside of stand up at smaller venues than everyone else. So, unless you can demonstrate that she's getting paid less than someone on Netflix with a more comparable situation, your point is just a feeling based around how much money someone way out of her league in terms of drawing ability, is making.

I'm going to say this and then I'm out, no need to respond because I'm a teacher not a debater or troll that's going to go back and forth. With that said, anyone on Netflix can be seen by millions rather you are a star. Millions watch regardless or not. Monique is very popular in the Black community which Amy is not. Monique is very popular in the white community as well and if she's seen on a national stage she would be far more popular than Amy. I never her of her before this, I i listen to comedians. Monique is still relevant it's just she didn't make nice with the right people.
