Who decides to name the plant? Great video, short and precise.

Some were named in the original development by Smirnow, who purchased some of the Itoh collection from his widow, some I believe by Itoh himself or his family. HOWEVER we find the naming is a little imprecise. The American peony society has some information.

I'm a little surprised...I was under the impression a good portion of Australia was in the subtropics and therefore not enough chill hours to grow peonies, but those look amazing!

In New South Wales in the Highlands, Victoria again in the foothills and Tasmania they grow very well. These would be classed as Temperate zones and all get cold winters.

I am in NC USA zone 8a. I put an Irish in the ground last spring. It is green this spring but has no sign of a bud. What do you suggest??

Our Itohs were slow to flower, took 2 years after transplanting I think. Check soil pH, it needs to be on the alkaline side. Add some lime, 2 - 3 cups. Make sure it gets good sun.

Try Farmergracy they seem cheaper, at £40 they are way overpriced.... Will be cheaper in a year or so.

How do you care for them if they are in a pot in full sun please?
@johnnyAGardening5 жыл бұрын
They are OK in full sun except in very hot climates, especially hot windy areas such as on a balcony, so depending on location, some light afternoon shade will be beneficial. They will also need more water in pots, so keep them moist, never wet and soggy, check that the soil dries just a little between waterings, and ensure drainage is good. You may also need an annual application of lime in pots as most potting mixes are lacking in lime. Fertiliser in early late winter. In very hot climates, .

Is lime a must have requirement? I have neutral clay soil for reference.
@johnnyAGardening5 жыл бұрын
Most growers suggest adding Agricultural Lime to the soil unless you live in an area with natural lime, Peonies originate in China from the Limestone foothill areas, So yes we recommend it.

@@johnnyAGardening Thank you for the very prompt reply. I was considering growing both tree and herbaceous penies with roses. Will this combination work and can the roses withstand the lime needed for the peonies? Much appreciated and love the videos from an Australian perspective as most are either Euro / US based.
@johnnyAGardening5 жыл бұрын
@@stephenkendall839 Roses generally prefer a slightly acid soil, so for optimum growth and flowering it not really recommended although we have seen them grown together.

What happened to the names of each Peony? You started out showing them and then all of a sudden, no more names… can you go back and add them please?
