We show how to replace the RV slide out Topper awning fabric on the large slide out of the motorhome.. I opted to go with the heavier duty tarp they describe as 18oz instead of the 15oz Vinyl fabric. To order see description.

I watch your video before purchasing our replacement awning (which I got on amazon for 80 bucks for the big slide-out). About a hour ago we watched the video again and decided to bite the bullet and take advantage of a nice 60 degree day. The worst part was cleaning the slide out and gathering the tools. This was a great video and we had it installed in less that 20 minutes. Awesome and thanks for sharing your tips.

Oh the other thing was the slide out was super slippery and I suggest taking a squeegee up there to get the extra water off quickly.

Thanks Frank. The blooper is make sure the camera is on all the time, I'm missing the part of cutting the old awning in 2 pieces LOL it happens but that was a good idea instead of sliding the whole tarp from both sides. live and learn. have a good weekend my friend and looking forward to your new home progress, you got me hooked on that garage.👍

Nice job, John. Julie and I did the same on our slide several years ago. Like you say in the video the most important thing is to go slow and make sure not to snag the new tarp on the edge of the slot when pulling it on. You should get some views on this one.

They are a family run business and really take the the time explaining from the thickness of the fabric to how to take the measurements, their prices are very reasonable as well.

Great video,only issue with us dyiers is since none of us have more then likely done this before one important piece of information is that there is front and back to the Fabric. Why they don't mark it is beyond me. Check to make sure you have it the right way, I could have saved alot of time knowing this which I have watched a couple different videos now and again no one mentions this. The plastic round cords they use are two different sizes,so again make sure you have it the right way. 👍

Thanks for your comment Robert. Yes it's all if you are up to it that makes any job easy or hard. Many people I spoke with at campgrounds were more afraid of the spring loaded roller than the rest of the job itself. My son was a great help for this kind of job, he is a perfectionist and the best welder I have ever seen. Have a great day my friend and may the gods of fishing look upon you with favor this weekend, hope you catch nice ones 👍

Hey John! I saw your comment on DR outdoors video about his channel switch. Just writing to say wow, you are awesome! You gained at least 1 more supporter from that...me. I have a personal YT account with (essentially) no content. I use my “channel” just to help follow/support/comment. BTW, Ken is on his knees begging you to help us replace our topper 🤣. We had a tiny leak in the outside wall of the slide during the 3 straight days of rain at Lost Lake. We have to remove the topper (I think 🤷🏻‍♀️) in order to deal with the leak. Not sure, haven’t researched it yet, just saw this video when I came to respond to your kind remarks to David. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
@JohnCRV
@JohnCRV 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about the leak. Your slide out is much shorter than mine it should be very easy to do . One thing about having the toppers its hard to clean the top of the slide out and hard to caulk as well. Do you have warranty?
@desertcat8029
@desertcat8029 6 жыл бұрын
No, we bought used last July and did not get warranty. We actually have a pretty good guy in Havasu but Ken is wanting to do more himself...he was not a DIY guy when I met him, but turned into one as his health improved. I think with a ladder, I could prob get under there to reseal without removing topper...may need to shed about 20 pounds to make it easier though! 😆 It’s small enough that I think we can manage until we get back, at worst, we will keep slide in when it rains (temporary fix)

You have no idea how much this helped. I just got a used RV and need to replace a few of these. Thank you. Now I do have a few that you have to manually roll out on the opposite side that won't lock Into place well actually none of the manual ones will lock in place I feel like I'm missing something.
@JohnCRV
@JohnCRV 3 жыл бұрын
Glad the video helped. If you're talking about the window awnings, they usually do not lock automatically, the strap that's used to pull them out have a loop at the end that goes into a plastic hook that's attached to the wall just below the window,

Great video John! I think you hit the nail on the head by saying to go slow on a project like this. It's one of those things you don't want to find out you messed up later simply by rushing things. I'm sure it would be easy to have things get caught, ripped to snared if going fast.

Hello Chris, it was more time consuming than it looks that’s why I mentioned to have patience LOL It would have been a 2 hour video..... but it is easy and yes it’s very much the same on an awaning, we helped a friend a few years ago. My first motorhome had those vinyl roofs and I’m glad I never had to replace it but wondered what would be entailed doing it or if it could be pealed off and not replaced with vinyl? May be coat it with something else. That would be a good video. Thanks for the great comment Chris. have a good weekend.

I am so grateful for this video! My topper has become very destroyed since the last windstorm we just had. It’s almost ripped all the way across but there’s a few feet still connected to the RV. I am wondering what will happen if that middle section rips completely off from the RV? Will the spring loaded roller have to be dealt with differently?
@JohnCRV
@JohnCRV Жыл бұрын
You don't want it to unwind at a fast speed, it can damage the spring without controlling the speed. They are meant to wind and unwind at a slow speed. I suggest you insert the pins at each end as shown in the video. Do not use the slide until ready to replace it. Slide a pin in the hole on each end of the tube to lock it in position so to prevent the spring from unwinding. I used Allen keys as pins. Good luck

@@JohnCRV thank you for the reply. I live in my RV full-time, and my bedroom slide is stuck in at the moment waiting for a part. It’s really hard to live in the RV with both slides closed for that long. But I guess I’ll have to.🙏🏻 I’ve watched several videos about this, and I am pretty confident I can do it. I was just thinking there might be a way to hold the roll bars in place while I wait for the replacement and be able to keep the slide out. I am familiar with the pin method. I wonder if I could remove the old topper with that method, and with the pins holding the springs, then put the slide back out and wait a few weeks for the new topper?

We just followed your video and all went smoothly. Only one challenge. Putting the anti billowing device back on. In the closed position it anchors just under the bracket on the motorhome body. When I looked at the other slideout it has the anti billowing device away from the body. Could you please tell me or show me the correct position it should be in when the slideout is in?

Is the make of your mechanism Dometic? If you are not sure click on the link on my description for the anti billowing part. further down you will see a link for the manual of the same make and model. On page 8 you will see instructions. you may want to save the manual, it may come in handy some day. Let me know if the link works since I haven’t checked it for a while. I hope it works out. Good luck

Just an FYI. The purpose of this device is to stop a slide out topper from unwinding while driving down the road. that is it. it shouldn't interfere with anything else. To position it, put your slide out in and make sure the little leg is at one o'clock on the driver side and 11 o'clock on the passenger side.

I just paid $500 to have 2 slide toppers replaced (fabric only) and they are both wrinkled. The tech said they always wrinkle at first and after some use they will smooth out, is this true? They replaced the fabric on both in about 45 minutes and were in a big hurry because they had one guy waiting to pull out and a wrecker waiting to pull in another rig and I was blocking them both.
@JohnCRV

If the new cover was not delivered wrinkled then there should be no wrinkles after the install. If not installed properly (evenly on both sides) it can wrinkle and they will not go away. If installed properly (Even on both sides) the wrinkles will go away with time.

John, excellent explanation and I learned more from you. I like that you not only do the work but you show the work, plus you mention that it should be clean, and explain why, Thanks for this video. John do you need a class B licence to drive your RV? Like 65 Gary

Hey Gary, Thanks for the kind comment, I try to explain as much as possible but try to keep it short because whats important to some is not the for the others. Paying attention to Audience Retention but it's not easy. Although I have a Class B since I was 18 it is not needed for RVs without air brakes.

Thanks so as long as the RV does not have air brakes I can drive it with a Class C license that is good to know. I used to have a Class A but after driving rigs for 5 years I gave it up, plus I lost both of my knees. Thanks for the information. Gary

Why when you placed the lock out pin in, rather than walking on the slide out roof you didn’t bring in the slide out so you could reach it?

I see Eternabond tape on the roof :) could tell you were soaked with sweat must have been very warm up on the roof and why is this stuff takes SOOOO much time to do why can an awning not just be unclip here and here and reclip done....hopefully we have a few years yet before we have to do this
@JohnCRV
@JohnCRV 6 жыл бұрын
Eternabond tape on the roof has been there for almost 7 years now and it was the best thing I ever done. Working in the summer is really not a good idea here in Florida but i was not taking any chances on going away and the old one would brake on me LOL. It's really not that bad if you have help. Thanks for dropping in my friend and Safe travels.

Any idea about winding the tube? My awning ripped off in the wind and the tube unwinded itself
@JohnCRV
@JohnCRV 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about you mishap Kyle. Wind the the tube toward the RV until you have tension, the amount of turns to wind it on my A&E awning from when you start feeling the tension is 4 full turns. Call your dealer or manufacturer to find out if yours is the same. After locking it on both sides slide in your new tarp and follow the instructions from the video from there. Make sure the springs were not damaged when it unwinded suddenly. If you feel any slipping. Inside the tube that means you need to replace the spring.thats comething I would not tackle. Hope this helps.
