Tie on a swivel and hook it to a loop of fishing line tied to... let’s say a chair back so the swivel can spin. Open the bail and start walking, not on water lol, but let more line out than you normally fish. Close the bail with rod pointing to swivel. Crank the line tight. That swivel is spinning and getting the twist out. After 30-45 seconds, start reeling with some tension pointing your rod while walking back. Done.

Soak your new spool for about 24 hours in a bowl of water with a few drops of fabric softer before putting it on your spool. It relaxes the line and removes the twist created by the factory spool. Works great for limbering up cast nets as well

Soak it in very warm water, spool it up, throw a hook on your line after putting it on your rod. Attach the hook to something sturdy or your trailer hitch, lock down your drag and let out line while being pretty tight and give it a couple pulls every 10-20ft. And then reel it up, boom you jus took out all the memory in your line, lays flat as a board

Casting out line without a lure behind the boat and take off trolling with the big motor and let out most of the line and reel back in is the most amazing trick for fixing line twist, because the water actually pulls all the line twist out and there's ample resistance on the line when reeling back in. Try it ! You won't be disappointed! I've done it with line I thought was garbage and after the respool and treatment with reel magic oil which can be used to treat the line everything was like brand new line.

My Mitchells 308 and 408 have the small capacity spools. I like to put only about 100 feet of 4lb line on by laying line down across the lawn then cutting to that length and reeling it in. STILL (even using a barrel swivel) I occasionally get twisted. NOW, I've been told that with the 308 and 408 - there's really little anyone can do. I'd like to hear your thoughts, thanks.

Most likely you moved the twist to the end of the line. Unless the line is fully stretched out and the end of the line free to rotate, reeling it through your fingers will untwist the line going onto your reel at the expense of putting more twist on the end of the line.

I think it's something that is so automatic to people who have been fishing with spinning gear all of their lives that it never gets mentioned. The bane of any spinning reel, or spincasting reel for that matter is a loose loop on the spool. Sooner or later, that loose loop is going to allow line to unwind off the spool prematurely, and once that happens, you have a birds nest. This is true with or without line twist, but a twisted line makes it worse, because twisted line wants to twist on itself as soon as you put any slack in it. If you see a loose loop on the spool, you need to cast or otherwise get enough line out to get past the loose loop as soon as possible and make sure the line properly respools when you reel it back in.
@russlehman2070
@russlehman2070 2 жыл бұрын
@@email16v No. Pulling line off the drag, and especially reeling while the drag is spooling rotates the spool. This is a major source of line twist. His "anectdotal perception" is entirely accurate.

I only use the very best equipment ( my custom G loomis 1 piece 7' 10" rod with Shimano stella is my goto for throwing big lures at Southern Bluefin tuna & Yellowtail Kingfish here in Victoria Australia. Using 9 & 12 inch sluggos unweighted combined with a super fast retrieve gets the fish. My Problem is this style of fishing is the worst for putting Line Twist in Braid. I'll be interested to try these tips of yours and see if they work.

@JohnCrews

Renaud Theis Hey Renaud, I do but it’s not a huge help. On 2, pressure is needed but not too much on a spinning reel. It doesn’t get enough dig on hook set to cause too much problem.

I re-spooled two 6500 class spools doing the old school spool facing real method with mono - both clockwise and counter-clockwise, and it was a disaster. Spooling it like a bait caster and keeping tension seemed to work better. I have to take these 6500s and toss sinkers only to see if they twist or not, before committing to bait and hooks.

Something that is helpful to understand is that line twist is inherent in the way a spinning reel operates. Since it works by winding the line on to the end of a spool with its axis parallel to the rod, rather than by rotating a spool with its axis perpendicular to the rod, as a bait casting reel does, if you reel untwisted line onto it, the line on the spool will have a half twist for every loop on the spool. However, when the line comes off the spool in a cast, it will again be untwisted. This would be perfect, except that most spinning reels, when you pull line off the drag, feed line by allowing the spool to rotate, with the result that the line comes off the reel still twisted. Add in lures or baits that rotate when you retrieve or troll them, the line will likely get some twist in it. Another consequence of this is that you should not machine spool line on your spinning reels. Many tackle shops will do this, with a machine that works by rotating the spool. This will result in the line on the spool having no twist, but when you cast it, it will come off twisted. If you reel untwisted line onto your reel, it will come off the reel with no twist. As long as you reel with some tension on the line, the twist in the line on the spool will not cause any problems (if you reel it loose, it will tend to form loops or kinks).

4 or 6 lb. Fluorocarbon or mono. Or 4 lb braid with fluorocarbon leader. A small barrel swivel in between braid and leader will reduce twist. It's what I trout fish with. I have zero problems.......oh yeah manually close your bail. It add twist when you don't and nobody wants to hear that CLANG. Prolongs the life of the reel also.

@jeffarcher400
@jeffarcher400 4 жыл бұрын
Don't confuse twist with set. Twist should come out like shown. Set can be reduced pulling line through folded piece of inner tube. Twist stored on a reel will set and be unremovable. Most set is loops from spool. Letting line out behind a moving boat and reeling back is good if you have a boat. #1 cause on big fish is reeling against a running fish. Rookie panic move. Wait... Fish stops run, lift smooth without hearing drag. Crank as you smoothly lower rod tip. Bend in rod should not change. Repeat. Use a swivel on troll or lures that twist. Nothing causes frustration like twist. I would have spare spools so hot bites you slam a fresh spool on and deal with it later. Good luck and tight lines.

Hi John, Tip # 3 Are you saying come off the new line spool counter clockwise and take up on the reel clockwise. I was under the idea to come off the spool in the same direction that the reel turns.
@LightCarver
@LightCarver Ай бұрын
People get confused about cw/cc because it depends which way you are looking at the reel when you decide what direction to call the spin. Also some confusion with rolls of line since line will come off in the opposite direction it turns, or would be turning if it is stationary. Easier to pay attention to the loops.

There are a bunch of videos about not spooling line all the way to the top, but none actually explain how to not let the line get to the top..every video shows cranking and spooling but how does that line stop an 1/8 from top? Hey John……Too many comments to read all of them. Soooooo….I know who you are, all your accolades and your skill level….I went with your method in the video of over the top spooling with 40lb braid on big saltwater spinning gear. Less than 100 turns in I could see twist in the line forming. I watched your video several times and on the final time I noticed you said Sunline has a regiment they follow for labeling their spools. At that point I was curious as to if other companies not doing the same would that affect the direction the line should come off the spool. Maybe under rather than over???? Fast forward to me spooling per your directive and the results were mentioned above which led me to this comment. This question is directed to help everyone and is in no means a dig on your advice or criticizing your knowledge…..IF the results are the same for others as myself does that mean we should do the opposite of your recommendation? Maybe spool from the bottom rather than the top of this happens. Also I am spooling from large quantity spools. A couple thousand yards plus of line, could that make a difference? I know you’re a busy guy but an answer for all would be appreciated. Thanks for the informational videos and tight lines man.

Do you still use the line conditioner on the braided line itself?

I do but it’s not as much help as straight flouro

Also don't use braid in cold weather -3c is about the coldest I use braid in. It's like a frozen shoe string

I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well kzbin.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

I fish jerkbaits all the time on a spinning set up and there's really no way avoiding reeling up slack line. which is why braid to a leader is the best thing ive ever tried. outrageous amount of benefits compared to straight floro.

I though straight fluoro is better, so braid to leader works the best for jerkbaits, crankbaits and topwaters? What pound line?

Spinning reels will always twist your line , braid twist but not as bad because of no memory in the braid. If you want no twist then you need a casting reel .

Line twist and spinning reels go hand-n-hand, you can't have one without the other.

Using a small barrel swivel from main line to leader helps and you don't have to tie that God awful knot 😅. It will reduce twist. I always put line on counter clock wise. I believe it helps. I can't remember when I've had a bird's nest. I believe the biggest thing is learning to MANUALLY CLOSE YOUR BAIL. Every time you don't it adds twist. It's not a hard thing to do once you get in the habit. It will prolong the life of your reel also. Nobody wants to hear that CLANG either. You know you're around a child or extremely new fisherman when you hear it. 😅 A trout fisherman might literally run you off. 😅
