"Full High Definition" I don't think you know what this means. Not to be rude here, and just hoping to educate: 1080i is NOT 1080p. Interlacing on modern televisions can introduce a massive amount of input lag. Also, interlacing means the actual rendered resolution sent to the TV is 1/2 the final output resolution. So 1080i is actually 540 lines of resolution with every other line being "interlaced"... Meaning the pixels are basically faked from the actual lines of resolution in the original signal. So one line of pixels then one line of faked pixels filled in by the TV. Progressive resolutions will always have a lower input latency and cleaner image because every pixel on the screen will be output in real time from the original signal with no extra processing from the TV - with the exception of upscaling.
@IanHollis3 жыл бұрын
I've always thought 720p looked better than 1080i (in general, I mean).
@Arcaged3 жыл бұрын
Also, it isn't native resolution, its 480 that the ps2 POORLY upscale.
@ridokilos-actual3 жыл бұрын
1080i doesn't "fake" half of the pixels, it just posts half of them at a time alternating between odd rows of pixels and even rows of pixels. Hardware could more easily handle broadcasting and receiving (mostly cable TV pipelines) half of the pixels for a given image per frame than all of them at once even though, at the time when 1080p and 1080i were both regularly used, 1080i would generally post at double the framerate. 1080p was clearly more favorable as displays grew larger and the interlacing became more noticeable. Part of the problem with interlaced scan was that anything that depended on frame precision (like slowmo video) resulted in you only getting "half" of a frame interlaced at a time. Modern TVs now days CAN de-interlace a 1080i signal however, which (depending on the method) does sometimes result in the "fake" pixels you described. Back in the day, displays didn't do all of the upscaling they do by themselves today and depended on the device broadcasting to them to basically do that with interlacing.

Not to mention that there are a plethora of Playstation 2 games that support 480p output which is a pretty big improvement over standard 480i, and this can only be enabled by using these cables. Some notable examples of 480p games on Playstation 2 include Burnout 2 (the very first game to support this feature) onwards, Guitar Hero II onwards, Rachet and Clank: Going Commando onwards, all Rock Band titles, Jak and Daxter II onwards, The Simpsons Hit and Run, both God of War games, and many more.

What would really be cool is if big tvs in the near future were capable of running retro games/consoles at both they're native resolution and screen size for correctly displaying them while turning off parts of the tv display that's not currently in use! 😳 I'm sure this has been thought about yet it's either too soon till its actually possible or its just a fantasy. 🤔 (I guess I can't sell myself too short since decades ago we all used to dream about VR and here we are today playing VR games and witnessing different worlds created from VR. 😏)

As long as you upscale by whole integer numbers and maintain the aspect ratio, you're fine, regardless of the original resolution. That's how Xbox does it with their backward compatibility program. If the game supports widescreen modes, it'll look damn near perfect on an HD TV, despite the age of the source material. Though one could argue Xbox cheats a bit here, by maxing out texture filtering and other graphical options far beyond what the original hardware could handle, but, hey, you don't hear me complaining about my free 'remasters'.

It honestly made the pixels so much more visible, sure it was High-Definition, though it became so 'pixely' (for lack of a better word).

The best-looking game at the time when the PS2 was and this is my personal favorite the bouncer. The graphics for that game was the best-looking game on the PS2. then came next Midnight Club one these were the two best looking game on the PS2 you can ask the see the potential that the PlayStation 2 had to offer when it comes to graphics with these two games but then after that the graphist got downgraded after these two games until I got my hands on Transformers on a PS2 and again you can see the power of the PS2 the graphics on that game was insane 10 out of 10 and then after these three games the graphics went downhill with the graphics after that but that just shows you that the PS2 had the potential to rival the Xbox when it came to graphics had they kept the graphics the same with all there games like with the three games I just mentioned.

with Bravia's at the time - ( I had the rear projection types ( for darkened rooms - that lost definition on the screen :( even 39 inch screens weren't crisp back then )

Well that's amazing what's yall favorite PS2 games. My is gta San Andreas
Some games also supported 480p, Tekken 4 can do this, but u have to hold X and Triangle on boot-up of game, u'll get a prompt about swapping to 480p. Games looks fantastic in this mode, Tekken 5 also did this but u could swap it in menu instead of the "hidden" button presses. Fatal Frame 3 also supported 480p, there's a list online of all the PS2 games that support progressive or higher resolution.

I actually did know this for the reason of, when I eventually replaced my TV, it no longer had the S-video/composite inputs. and component inputs do not always take composite, at least sometimes when they do, you actually lose the color on the tv. Not like it is unsaturated, but that it actually straight up has a chance to become Monochromatic. On a hilarious note I recall having to changes the setting from composite to component blind. and even though it can do 720-1080i, it looks rather sharp and gets rid of some blurs that make certain games look better. Like in Okami.

This feature improves "sharpness", resolution., but pixelated graphics on HD TVs are noticeable when you are too close to the TV, the farther you are from the TV and the farther you look the image you see less pixelation, another factor is the size of the screen, if the HD TV or monitor is less than 32 inches you´ll see less pixelation, so you need to have a smaller screen and look it from a farther distance, but of course the best solution for the pixelation problem is to use scalers

Component cables for video and fiber optic for audio tapped into your 5.1 Dolby sound system was kick ass back in the day. Did that for the original Xbox and first revision of Gamecubes too. Sadly, there was no fiber optic output for the Gamecube though. And if you really wanted the best picture you would get Monster brand cables if available for that system which were the best at the time.

I was never able to get the component cables, so I used S-video for everything. nice and sharp for it's day, even at 480.
@TheDukeOfZill3 жыл бұрын
found that component cables at least makes games look much nicer (crisp) on an SDTV that has component inputs (my old bubble tube 40" CRT), not in terms of resolution, but signal clarity. it's much nicer than s-vid.

Guaranteed, this isn't as secret a feature as you think. The Gamecube and Xbox also had the ability to use component for a higher definition signal. The only real issue with the video is calling composite video cables S-video cables. While both cables produced a similar signal, S-video inputs were much more rare, and allowed progressive video (480p) versus the traditional or truly standard definition (480i). I'd suggest, for the most part, 360p is pretty similar to 480i and 720p is similar to 1080i for MOST TVs. I'd rather have a progressive video resolution, personally, but it could be argued that the 1080i signal was easier on plasma displays when they were more prone to burn in.

You forgot to include Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria to the list. Another game released in the US. That game also outputs 1080i when using YpbPr component cables. Many complain about still poor quality image, but if you used the official PS2 and later the gold plated PS3 component cables, the image is crisp and detailed.
