How to test the Neurological Reflexes of the Upper Limb (C5-C7)

John shows you how to test nerve root level of the biceps (musculocutaneous nerve) through C5, brachioradialis (radial nerve) through C6 and triceps (radial nerve) C7 and a normal response is classified as 2++. Any reduced hypo-reflex (1+) or increased hyper-reflex (3+++) with clonus and Babinski positive as might indicate some form of upper motor neurone lesion like Multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal cord tumour or brain injury. Any altered reflex will need further investigation as a possibility of disc or neural pathology. These techniques and more is taught on the Neurological Master-Class at the University of Oxford.

during the examination of bicep reflex why do we hit the reflex hammer on our finger?

The thumb changes the tension within the biceps tendon as you need to stimulate the muscle spindles and works better (not all the time as sometimes just tapping the tendon will work on some patients, regards JG

My neuro told me I have absent c5-c6 reflexes in my right arm I don’t have any other problem though. What does it mean? MRI showed decreased vertebral height between c5-c6

I have a bad c4 and c5 .knots in my shoulders. I reach to pick up something . I get a sharp pain going down my bicep elbow forearm and to my fingers. I scream out.. like hitting your elbow. The tingling and numbness in my fingers , do not go away. I have degenerative disc disease.. lower back too. Bone spurs. Neck spurs. I am 50.
