I had real neurological examinations a number of times just over week ago after being admitted to hospital for the first time in my life following a bout of campylobacter food poisoning!!! It was horrific and I had slurred speech, seizures nystagmus and parasthesia… lost my coordination too and thought I was having a stroke … lay on my driveway and called 999 with my phone next to my head on loudspeaker as I couldn’t hold my phone to my face .. I’m only 39! I’ve only just started driving again and my speech had improved (it’s still not 100% but I’m improving) My handwriting is still scruffy… but I’m alive 🥳 I was terrified I had permanent brain damage or something but it turned out that I had critically low phosphate and it caused problems with my nervous system. My nervous system is now re-learning. Sadly, because I had the worst headache of my entire life and was intermittently vomiting throughout, I didn’t get the “ASMR effect” during my neurological examinations 🤣 they made me feel even more sick and dizzy… but I did think of YOU while I was close to death Dr Gill! Had you been there in the flesh I don’t think I’d have been listening to a single word as I was feeling half dead anyway ! I realised that real-life examinations are not quite like the relaxing videos 🙂 Keep up the good work 👍

Absolutely re motor skills and coordination Someone with a problems with the nerves to the hand would have difficulty performing fine motor skills, so would likely not be able to do shoe laces - conversely, that patient may already have swapped shoes so they don’t have to deal with laces In which case we’d ask them to do and un-do a button

Interesting that you start sensation by testing C8 and working your way up the limb as you test the various dermitomes, rather than starting at C4 and working through the nerves neumerically, rather than proximally working up the limbs. Is that just a personal preference thing, or do you have a particular reason you do that the way you do, Dr. Gill?
