Interesting to note as well is the fact that the rf 85mm f1.2 is the most zoomed in of the bunch. I've actually seen in several reviews that the sigma 85mm is actually a few mm short of a true 85mm. I think the f1.2 is actually a hair longer than 85mm (which will give a bit more compression and blur) so I actually like that personally.

Another excellent video...thank you. Well I've a hard time parting with any of my "L" and Art lenses for the RF engineered plastic replacements...but I did buy the RF 24-70 after selling my "L" 50/1.2. I did compare two RF lens rentals and to my eye, my "L" 85/1.4, 24/1.4 and Art 135 were just as sharp w/o any focusing issues, but the RF 50/1.2 outperformed the "L". Used my R (selling) and R5...RF adapters are great.

Thanks for this. I still haven't jumped into the RF system yet. It's a big gulp. The 85 is my money lens so this is a great video. One point you don't mention is carrying round the 1.2 all day even in studio is a real challenge. I still cannot decide what I would do but tbh that is a huge factor. If you really don't need the 1.2 1.4 f-stop and shooting with flash predominantly and are at f 7.1/8 most of the time I am not sure the big extra money or weight are worth it. The 1.2 looks more like a 90mm based on this an other reviews. Not sure why they did that.

Thanks Peter! This afternoon I will probably post a supplemental video to this one that shows what the lenses look like at 5.6-8 away from the center. Basically the macro is crazy sharp in the middle and then falls off. Whereas the models hair is sharper in the non macro images.

Thank you for this careful testing and presentation! I recently upgraded from the 5Dmk2 to the R5 and I've found that the R5 makes painfully obvious flaws in EF L-class lenses that didn't bother me so much in the past. The 85/1.2Lii still takes breathtakingly beautiful shots with great contrast, but working with wide apertures, the false color in hair and in reflections on glasses' frames and the like is really objectionable at high magnification. It's hard to un-see these things once you see them. Of course, stopped down to f/5.8 or f/8, these chromatic aberrations disappear. I would be curious if you have any demos showing the EF 85/1.2Lii vs. the RF 85/1.2 stopped down to studio apertures.
@JohnGress4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ken. Unfortunately it has been a year since I had the EF 1.2 II, but antidotally, the Sigma Art seemed like a much better lens just based on the flare I was getting with my hair light, where as the SIgma was crystal clear.

Getting caught up on my JG videos cause, ya know, can't be missing any! Digging the Christmas change up in the intro music. Love these comparisons. Frankly I'm shocked with the Sigma ART, those lenses have always been razor sharp when you nail focus so to see it lagging behind the Canon glass is surprising. Maybe if and when they bring out their RF mount lenses the sharpness will get back on par with the Canon glass. I still haven't pulled the trigger on any RF glass yet, I'm not sure where I want to go, lol.
@JohnGress4 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! I hear all of that, 100. I was blown away that the Canon lenses were so much better. If it wasn't for using my C200 for most of my videos, I would unload all my EF lenses. Very interesting review; useful information. I have a decent monitor but not a great monitor and I could only detect a small difference between the RF 1.2 and the f2...up close I couldn't see hardly any difference (except that the Sigma wasn't as good) Hmmm I have been using the OLD canon L 85 EF 1.2 and I bet this RF f2 blows it away and it has been a good lens. I was going to buy the 85 RF 1.2 but might just get by with a RFf2 for now. I do think either will beat my old original EF 85 1.2 it was a C.A. and flare monster.

@@JohnGress Ok just watched...Well damn. I 'll say this for the money that f2 is really a good value. I shoot mostly wide open and not usually in studio. I do all sorts of stuff including portraits...but I usually shoot outdoors and I like shallow depth of field (mostly) So, yes that is another check mark for the 1.2 and even the 1.4. However, f2 is not "slow" by any stretch and I thought I could live with it not being as sharp as the 1.2. wow that is a huge difference in price though. I might get the f2 for NOW and then look for a "refurbished" 1.2 later when available. I think I will email canon CPS and get a loaner to try. Thanks Good stuff!

You will have to wait a long time , I bought my 85mm.f/2 some time ago and to date Canon have never produced a lens hood for this lens, however don’t worry JJC can supply a really good lens hood for about $15 American. You won’t be disappointed. Cheers.

Halo... May I have your experience using RF 85mm F/2, as I heard this lens has slow autofocus? I am EOS RP shooter and thinking between this lens vs Tamron 85mm F/1.8 VC. Thanks!

I have the Samyang 1.4 and I am shocked at how good it is. I rented the canon 1.2 to compare. It is easily as sharp and once I updated the firmware no issues on the r5. It has a different overall look than the 1.2 canon but I really like it. Time will tell if it is well built enough for professional use but so far it is an amazing lens. Given the price, I would recommend any photographer using the R system look at it as an option.

I see that this video was made a year ago. I'm looking to by an 85mm RF lens for my Canon RP. What would you recommend that is not crazy expensive? Is it just the Canon 85mm RF lenses that I should be looking at or is the Sigma 85mm an RF lens as well? Also, would you say that 85mm is the best focal length for portrait photography? Thanks for any help!
@JohnGress3 жыл бұрын
I do think an 85mm is a great portrait lens and depending on your budget the EF 1.4, sigma EF 1.4 and the RF f2 could be good choices. Just make sure you see part 2 😁

since rf cannot be used on dslr, i gonna need to mount it with an adapter (i use 6d mk ii). will it affect its performance, esp. contrast and sharpness? i was considering the sigma one but undoubtedly the rf lenses pack more powerful performance
@JohnGress11 ай бұрын
I don’t believe you can put an RF on an EF mount. The sigma is probably your best option. The last canon EF 85 1.4 is probably technically a little better, but I’m not sure.

I have the Rokinon RF 85 1.4 and nonoe talks about it. It is super light, fast quiet focus and just beautiful. The only negative is that the lens is a little warmer than my other lenses. But on white people that might be a plus. It cost $650 similar to the RF 85 2 but you get 1.4

13:45 “ I didn’t even notice that it wasn’t that sharp.” Perception is reality. And the perception that matters the most is that of your audience, not your pixel peepers. All three lenses are fantastic in terms of sharpness. I think this message is lost a little bit. Anyway, great video.

It’s good review like many other reviewers on the same shoot out but I am surprised you are pissed off with end findings. Would you honestly think Canon will make 600 dollars lens better the 2700 dollars lens? I have one and its best 2 in 1 in expensive optics. What you pay, what you get. In fact, more you get in this case! Well done Canon and no need for Sigma Art

Once again Canon showed why their signature lenses cost so much. When you’re trying to make your images stand out their 85, 135, and 28-70 have a special look. They are good quality and last in pro use.

Should I keep my EF85mm L 1.2 MkII and adapt on my R5 , or go with the F2 macro . Or sell & save up for the RF1.2L ? I normally shoot lifestyle , natural light portraits at F2 , and studio portraits at F8 , and product shots at F14 with it.

With those F-Stops in mind, it seems like adapting it could be the way to go. But I sold the lens you're using to get the Sigma lens because it was better optically.

Even after watching this IM STILL in a pickle LOL. I don’t want to break my bank with the 1.2 this is my problem. Sharpness is my main focus and my greatest pet peeve. If I can get sharp images everytime that’s what I aim for. I do have an RF 35mm f/1.8 macro so maybe I guess I’ll just get the 85mm 1.2 since I already have a macro lens? Lol at the moment im focused on only renting the 1.2 on occasion especially for weddings only. And in the meantime I guess I’ll buy the 85mm macro and when I make enough money from my shoots I’ll buy the 1.2 instead of renting… BUT lol
