I love the fact that you can get an Everdrive and a wireless controller and give a new life on these old consoles cause unless you are a collector its just not possible to get catridges with current prices.

You can be like me and be into an NES MegaMan set for only $50.96CAD as an example if you only use my one secret tip. BUY YOUR GAMES IN 2002. Its also how you can be into a Bucky O'Hare and a Metal Storm for only $5 each... and a FULL Stack-Up with all the parts to R.O.B. at only $40 Its a Very simple trick. Buy games before the prices go up and you can get them cheap.

Thanks for the awesome video! I actually have used the EON Super 64 for about 3 years now and have also bought a couple as gifts to friends who were just getting into N64 and they love the ease of use compared to other HDMI hook up options as they were not ready to get into researching or paying for mods. It's literally like combining an S-video cable, retrotink 2x, and it's own power suppy all in one small little shell that sits nicely into the back of the N64.

Hey John. On Sunday, I went to the flea market and bought a nintendo wii for $5. It came with power and video cables but no controller or sensor bar. At home, I plugged it in, it powers on and reads the game discs. On amazon I ordered a offbrand wiimote/nunchuck combo and sensor bar for $30 with tax and free shipping. So basically I got a wii for $35. 👍

Tried to show Mario 64 to my Girlfriend, she enjoyed Mario Odyssey since last year. But the N64 controls were quite offputting for her and she had troubles getting started so I realized that this older gen of consoles did have its flaw : the N64 controller.(I love the N64 controller and the Mario 64 controls, but they are of another era, it's evident now that I see it as it is.)

You should look into the hyperkin controller. Maybe it was called admiral? Its like an original n64 pad but it has a more modern stick. I have a modern style controller for the n64 and i just cant get over the new form factor... it makes playing feel wrong. So the hyperkin controller was a god send for me. I got tired of the reproduction controllers flimsy sticks literally peeling off as its just a pin and plastic placed on top... whenever i buy original pads the sticks are never proper. If you find yourself wanting the original form factor, definitely recommend its on amazon but it sells out quite regularly. Had it for about 3 yrs now and its great.

Hey John, I've got a recommendation for your setup, If you want to play games on your big screen, but want the audio to go to some earbuds or headphones, I recommend getting a Bluetooth audio receiver. Mine has nfc so I can tap my earbuds to the outside of the case and it pairs together with the receiver. There is almost no latency when using the earbuds and it works very good. The delay is not noticable with any of my earbuds/headphones It even comes with a remote for controlling audio. It's a set and forget solution that I've used for a while , it's inputs are toslink composite red and white cables and a stereo 3.5mm headphone jack.

CRT is the way to go. Some game sugguestions, if I may. (I always try to give ones you might not otherwise get) Castlevania 64 (not legacy of darkness) way better than it gets credit for WinBack: Covert Operations - One of the most overlooked and wonderful games of all time. Space Station Silicon Valley - hard to describe, but way more fun than it should be. Twisted Edge Snowboarding - everyone loved 1080 but, this is where it was at pre-SSX IMO. Rush 2: Extreme Racing USA - hands down the best racer on the system, emphasis on the "stunt" level.

I like the Super64 and I like the wireless controller from Retro-bit because of it's Hori/GCN thumb stick and that it has built in rumble but the drawbacks to using these modern devices is that they get their power by pulling power from the N64 console itself which can make both your N64 and the cartridge you have inserted get overheated which is why I went switch to using S-Video cable with the retrotink 2X Pro and a wired OG or wired Retrofighters controller because my N64 being cool to the touch after a hour of game play is more important to me.

Transfer Paks are pretty cool if you happen to have Gen 1 or 2 Pokemon games. You can store your Pokemon between playthroughs, trade without multiple GBs and even play the games on your TV with the only official 2-4x speedup. Everdive adds a few more benefits, since you can backup your saves to dupe Pokemon etc. There's also a piece of homebrew to backup and restore your GB saves as well, and even dump roms. I haven't tested it much, but it should work with most games, not just Pokemon.

I was a kickstarter backer of the original wired Brawler 64, and was sent a fix kit for the shoulder buttons, and had a good experience with them quickly resolving the issues, so from that I backed the 2nd round to get a see through red controller, and they are a god send for playing N64 with some generic extension cables. for my memory/rumble pack I use a Nyko pak that double as both, and so far after it's never let me down in saving my games, I just make sure to use good AAA batteries with it, and not Duraleaks. Also I went on Aliexpress, and got a generic multicart with a loaded micro SD card that works great as I could not find an Everdrive for sale, and also it looks great on my 27in Panasonic CRT with the official S-video cable I've had for years that runs through a 3 device component switch box with the stereo audio from the CRT going out to my 5.1 Dolby digital surround sound setup in my game room. I'm going to have to pick up some more wired Brawler 64 controllers, and extension cables for a 4 player Mario Kart 64 night with the family as that's still such a great game.

The Brawler 64 for PC is definitely my favourite modern N64 product. Even though playing on an actual N64 is ideal, but I personally prefer to emulate most consoles to avoid managing many consoles, and the ability to upscale games, use savestates, cheats, and more are also great factors. The only N64 games that I've played in the past 2 decades are Super Mario 64 and one of the Rampage games.

I never got the N64 or even played it back in the day, but recently picked it up at a retro gaming con here in Sweden and played the game I got enough to know it works. Will be hooking it up permanently along with other consoles to my TV. The two things that look the most promising for me are the memory pack without batteries and the region bracket :D Nice video! I got a Framemeister xrgb mini back before they were discontinued and I'm glad I did because while my previous TV had a scart adapter (only RGB compatible, not S-video though!) my current one only has component which is weird since it was never really used (much, some things have had the connectors in the past as an afterthought) in Sweden :p

I have my original console bought in 1996. I recently bought an original first party controller at a resale shop, the joystick is in far better shape than my old ones. Most of my memory cards failed, though I do have the expansion pak which I also purchased at the time separately from the games. I have the transfer oak but never use it. Stadium was kind of a dud. I have the rumble pak as well as two third party versions. I'd love to get myself an everdrive, a no-battery memory card, and a rumble pak wired to use system power rather than batteries. The carts hold up better than the controllers and that is saying a lot. moreso, the games themselves hold up. Nintendo 64 was one of the best investments I have ever made and to this day it continues to pay off.

finding replacement controllers has become a huge hassle for me. Part of the reason I stick with the original hardware (in gaming in general) is because of the controllers. I got burned with a few online controllers QA but found some descent replacement parts. I love the idea of a wireless controller for the n64 but would definitely need that weird upside down Arwing shape.

My personal experience with the Retro Brawler controllers is that there are a lot of problems with them, especially when trying to use more than one at the same time. We couldn't seem to get the wireless connection to be reliable, especially with 3 or more players using three different ones at once. However, the analogue stick on them also just seems to be a bit sketchy and significantly less consistent than a standard controller. I have personally tested the hyperkin hdmi adapter, but I also have an RGB modded N64 with a RAD2X Retrotink adapter, and while there definitely is a difference between the two, the difference is not really obvious, and I'm very happy with how well the Hyperkin cable works, given how cheap it is. There are some adapters which can be found for cheaper which may be as good as the Hyperkin, but some are definitely significantly worse.

In 3 years, this console will be 30 years old. I’m 14, so I never had the experience of owning an N64, but gosh-darn-it, I wish I did. I bet it was fun to be there in the moment as companies like Nintendo, SEGA and Sony paved the way and created amazing new experiences never thought possible to little gamers back then, like you guys. But game companies aren’t the ones doing that now, are they? Now, every game is the EXACT SAME, with stuff like “open-world” and “4k-graphics” being the only things the market cares about. Yeah, indie games sometimes make an old-school experience like this, but I wish it was the norm again. I was born in the wrong generation.

I live in Australia. I have an NTSC American N64 with a PAL/Australian power supply (they're removable). In my opinion the best, non invasive way to play N64 in 2023 is to use a Retrotink 5x + Svideo cable from Retro Gaming Cables (recommended from RetroRGB) + an Everdrive 64 X7. That's my current set up and it's highly recommended.

I was a playstation guy during that generation and had no nostalgia for it, so I just got an ultra hdmi modded console, an everdrive and a couple hori pads to check it out a couple years back. I've been rather pleased with my set up.

I went in to my local retro game store after a long stint due to work, I was shocked to see how much they were pricing games, particularly Sega Saturn which they got a big complete US and JP collection in not long ago. Nintendo 64 games have blown up quite a bit and Sega Genesis seemed to be bubbling up too, particularly if they came with the box/manual. I’m thinking the Everdrive solutions may be the way forward unless collector prices calm down. Thankfully I built up a nice collection of N64 games by the used market and conventions before prices blew up so an Everdrive would make playing much more convenient. As for HDMI, I can’t wait for someone to finally make a modern retro console for Nintendo 64, it will make the HDMI issue much easier and will probably do better output than the HDMI mods since it would be with new hardware.

I don't use the original Rumble Pak but a Gamester device that serves as a Rumble Pak (no batteries required) AND as 4 controller paks all in one. Apart from this, I go old school: CRT and original cartridges and controllers, although I sometimes use a Retrobit tribute controller, especially for some racing games and for 1080 Snowboarding (which I don't like to play with a regular controller)

The Thumb Stick on the N64 controller is better for Mario 64 compared to the Wii and Switch versions because you could creep walk or crawl with Mario very slowly

I've been wanting to grab an Everdrive for ages, to play all the games that didn't come out in the UK! Also, the Brawler controller looks really good! So I've had my eye on that too!

Just want to give you a protip, I personally would go for the wired versions of the Brawler 64 with some generic extension cables as they are cheaper, and work just as well as I have 2 from the original 2 kick starter campaigns, also the multi carts that come with a loaded Micro SD card on Aliexpress are far cheaper, and work just as well from my testing. Just make sure you get the one for your region, so you don't have any issues on first boot, and they will come with PAL, NTSC, and NTSCJ games, plus some have the option for Game Shark codes before loading the ROM as well.

Think a good setup that's missing in the video is playing with the NSO N64 Controller with the BlueRetro N64 adapter. It's like playing with a brand new N64 controller with the correct stick precision and sensitivity(Brawler64 and those hall effect replacement sticks all are more sensitive and deliver a less authentic experience) but wireless and it has built in rumble. The BlueRetro N64 Adapter also emulates 4 controller paks for save games. The NSO controllers are lubed and thus won't wear out nearly as fast as original controllers. The only hassle is that the first time you need to connect to the BlueRetro via Phone/PC with BT and then format the memory slots before N64 games can use them.

I’ve heard of the EverDrive, but didn’t realize what it was. Being able to play home brew is always fun. That was one of my favorite things on the Dreamcast, just checking out the home brews. The forever pak is also cool. I wish I still had my n64. I tend to emulate. But emulation of n64 is kind of a pain.

I'm still waiting for the next batch of PixelFX kits. I was lucky enough to get a Hi-Def NES and installed it with my NESessity 1.4 in my old NES and they are fantastic together. Next project with be a full resto and upgrade of an SNES and then after that I'll be tackling my N64.

Great idea for a video. I love the Brawler 64 controller. I have the wired and wireless for my N64. I connect to my HD TV with a quality S-video cable to an S-video to HDMI upscaler. I had the EON Super 64 but did not like how it had problems adjusting to games that switched resolutions like Killer Instinct Gold. The Expansion Pak is a must. I am glad I got mine before prices went crazy. Keep up the great work. Definitely, a good time to be a retro gamer.

I have 2 Setups In my living room its my Childhood N64, connected to a 5 way Composite switch, (Along side my Childhood NES, Childhood Gamecube, SNES which is the only console I owned as a child that I don't have that console of as my brother has that one, and my Original Wii) which then runs out to my Retro Tink 2x Pro, which runs into an 8 way HDMI Switch which runs into my Flat screen TV. In my Office I have my Second N64, My Toploading NES, My Second SNES, My Adaulthood moved away from home Gamecube (DOL-101), and my Second Wii) All connected to a 20' CRT because I need a space where I can play Zapper games, and can play Gyromite, Stack-Up, and Super Glove Ball Properly with R.O.B. and the Power Glove Respectively. All my Cartridge based games and Disc games up to Wii live down here and get transported upstairs when I want to play them up there anything Post wii (Wiiu, Switch, and my Wifes Sony/Microsoft games) Live upstairs and don't come down here.
