@@IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadio Agree! Yeah growing up, being a Nintendo guy then was somewhat difficult at times when seeing games like; Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Crash Bandicoot, GTA and loads of interesting titles not comong to Nintendo, but I agree that the N64 still had in the end of the day the most re-play valued games and best multiplayer games indeed.

Dont take me too seriously. That was just meant to be a tongue-in-cheek nod title. As a 90s kid who grew up in the transition from 2D-3D was a Sega Genesis kid, never had a Saturn or PlayStation but got a 64 around 97-98. This is so cool to see the backstory. This type of stuff should be preserved it’s insane that these companies themselves don’t produce full documentary and archives on these moments in gaming. The beginning of the 80s to 90 is important but 94-98 as the 3D revolution is so pivotal to gaming we still have now. We might have VR/AR now but this change almost 30 years on still is the dominant method in which we expect all games to play outside of 2D games built for nostalgia.

I have mixed feelings on the N64. I grew up on Atari 2600 and Colecovision, finally got an NES in 87, was a full on video game enthusiast who got the SNES upon release, then got an N64 in May 1997. I had Mario and Turok and initially loved them and beat them both (had to cheat for Turok). But the novelty of 3D quickly wore off and I found new games too big to explore and too time consuming and I lost all interest in getting the new consoles upon release. I still play some old stuff but my serious love of video games died with the N64. I did later buy a used Goldeneye because it was mandatory, and I think I got NHL 2000, but I haven't touched anything N64 related in over 15 years. I'm 2D for life. Except for Twisted Metal 2, the only PS game I own and the sole reason I later picked up a used PS1.

I remember getting frustrated that Nintendo had been pushing back the release date. I was out of highschool, working and eager to play. I went to live abroad in South America for a number of years for business and first saw the N64 down there at a friends house in 1997 and played Mario 64. I was later in Santiago in the middle of town and saw an N64 display showing Turok and I was blown away by the graphics. What irritated me, after the N64 release, is that Killer Instinct was never released on the N64. Not the version in the arcade. If you play the arcade version, I distinctly remember the arcade saying something along the lines of "soon for release on the Ultra 64".

Oh yeah, I remember getting turok for my birthday and loved the game. Not just for the gameplay but the music of that game is great! I was always confused by that voice announcing “coming soon to Nintendo Ultra 64”. My mom worked at a bowling alley in the 90’s and I always hung out in the arcade area where both the cruisin usa and killer instinct arcades were there. I was 9 at the time and didn’t have a Nintendo power subscription so I had no idea what was going on about the N64 until it actually came out and I saw a demo kiosk at a Target store. Still even after its release I still thought a Nintendo Ultra 64 was out which was better than the regular Nintendo 64. Man was I wrong! Making this documentary solved and pieced together so many mysteries and questions I had growing up!

52:14 That couldn’t be further from the truth. Because they have the mentality of selling their children’s IP with the biggest profit margin possible. Meaning quality actually comes last because they use decade old hardware and sell it to families with a big profit margin, and you can’t get quality on ancient hardware. That’s why the N64 used cardridges and suffered, because they are dependent on selling their console as the family game toy more than 3rd party support, so they have to protect their IP. Also why Nintendo feels like they have to take every one to court today because their family toy sales depend on their IP.

Thank you so much as to what I was trying to do with the first 7 or 8 minutes of this. When you tell a story, even if it’s not exactly the subject, it’s always good to lay a foundation to give the subject (nintendo 64) the weight it deserves. Yeah those RPG’s PlayStation won over killed the N64’s longevity. The few Zelda titles kept it alive into 98 and 99 but man. I feel it’s a system that never got to realize and harness its final form of power.

@18:09 Didn't the Sega Saturn have the analogue stick controller first? "Notably the 3D Control Pad beat the Nintendo 64 to market by a month in the US and several months in Europe, so the Sega Saturn stands as the first video game console to support modern analogue stick support." Sega was always ahead of the curve and their magnetic Dreamcast analogue stick is still superior to the stuff that we have even today.

With all the push back of the release date I’m sure Sega saw what Nintendo was doing in 1995 and beat them to the punch by putting out that controller then. I’m sure had Sega not known what Nintendo was doing a year prior, an analog stick wouldn’t have been a glimmer in their eye.

The Virtual Boy really harmed the reputation of Nintendo. Instead of saying, "Save up for the N64. It will be worth the wait. Until then we have some killer new games to keep you on the SNES." Instead Nintendo said, "Spend all your saved up money Christmas and birthday wish lists on the Virtual Boy. This is the future of gaming and console we will support. All the new great games will be on Virtual Boy so don't be left out." Neither myself or any of my friends bought a Virtual Boy but we all felt lied to. How could we ever put our faith in Nintendo's next console the N64 if it would just turn out to be another Virtual Boy lie? The PlayStation was already out for a year with a ton of great games so it wasn't just a promise.

Always found it funny that some of the biggest goof ups Nintendo made, turned out a blessing in disguise. Take the beef with Sony, if they hadn't betrayed Sony, Sony would never have made the PSX to compete (and get back at) Nintendo. This actually incentivised the big N to push for new tech and ideas just like they had to do when Sega was still around. It was already clear by that time Sega and Atari would not be able to compete in the console market any longer as Sega made utterly weird decisions and Atari... well.. Jack happened, need I say more. (do we really need to talk about 3DO, NeoGeo, or Amiga? they never stood a chance to begin with) As for Philips, it thaught them how important their intelectual property was which ensured in the long run that they were able to create a somewhat cohesive game universe where Mario, Samus, and Pikachu could occupy the same game.

A bit unfair to throw the Neo Geo in there, considering it was originally only made for Hotels and rentals, until so many people pestered SNK about it, that they noticed that people really would throw a ludicrous amount of money at them for this system. Only then was it released to the general public and for such a incredible niche system, it actually did quite well. It sold more units than the Jaguar, 3DO, Amiga CD32 and Virtual Boy combined. I'm glad it existed, not only was it the ultimate bragging rights system back then, it (and still is), also introduced the concept of memory cards.
