While this is not balsa airplanes I watch all of your builds and I think you are a craftsman. Craftsmanship is being lost and everyone now depends on throwaway junk.

I love the wooden knob on the head of the screw that tightens down the pencil. Great finishing touch!

I am always amazed when I see someone scribe. Two pencils held together by a rubber band (for a quick fix) was the first time I saw this done. Great work John.

Oh John you make the coolest, best looking tools this side of the prime meridian! Your mini compass is getting jealous, which is why you made sure to mention that it was "mainly" going to be used for scribing cabinets...nice save guy! Good video, thumbs up.

This is a purdy pair. Last winter I picked up the combination pack from Harbor Freight with inside , outside dividers , n such. While keeping warm in the evenings I'd file ,.polish these items. After they looked presentable I rust blued them. Sure they ain't Starett , but it gave me something to do while watching TV.

I'm yet to build anything you've posted but this will be my first project in my metal shop. There have been countless times I've needed a compass and I'm just too dumb to remember to buy one. Thanks for the instructions.

This is an awesome video. It shows how much skill and precision goes into even a small project. Awesome video can’t wait to see you use it in future videos. Also really liked the jig for the table saw to cut in the end. If you made a video for that I missed it.

cool,,, got some thermal wood, cooked white ash, that is almost chocolate in colour, , great idea for x mass presents , as i give my wood working friends, a hand made wooden shop tool for the last 4 yrs, ,,,, this is cheap and fairly simple to make , , tks for sharing, love these shop tool builds john , keep them coming

Another cool build project. I don't think John has ever simply thrown away a drill bit (which is pretty awesome). Really like the "high-def project fly-by" pics at the end!

If you make a dowel with a spike in it you could have yourself some dividers, handy for measuring out dovetails. (Maybe a spike in the other end of the pencil?). 👍

Oh yeah!!! Using $300.000 worth of equipment to make a compass!!! I'll just pop into my garage and get my drill, hand saw, and jigsaw!!! What is the point of showing this 'precise' piece of equipment when the majority of viewers have only a few hand tools? Oh wait! I forgot my beltsander.
