Well... what's a comfy chair without a footrest? In this video I cover how I made one for the chair i recently built that's pretty unique - it's gear actuated and fits completely beneath the chair when folded in. Like I said in the video, the complexity of this was off the charts and the video would be several days long if I included all of the details that had to be worked out. To give you an idea of how much time went into it, overall it took longer to design, build and debug than the chair itself. A challenge indeed. The gears are 3D printed from PETG and they are holding up very well, but I would like to make new ones from wood (or aluminum!) in the future, now that I have the mechanism perfected. That's the beauty of 3D printing when you can design your own parts - it lets you quickly change parts during the design / build process. You missed the chair build video? Watch it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioazdoydn5Vjabs

For someone who is "slowing down" you are killin' it. I was impressed with the chair but the footrest almost has the engineering of the space shuttle. Nice job on the chair John.

Very cool. I like the 3d printed parts to work out the motion. I'm sort of amazed the friction of all those parts doesn't make it too hard to spin from the side like that. Thank you for taking us on your journey.

Yes that upholstery trick with the bag is champion as they say when saving the purpose built answer to a particular problem. Your sewing skills are really impressive for such good results so quickly. Like yesterday you picked up a sewing device and turned out some very nicely done pieces- that function ! Thrilling venture you’ve tapped into. So inspiring to me…wish I was younger and stronger so that I could learn these new skills of yours. So it goes. Keep up the ideas my Canadian brother of a different mother.

I've been playing with gears and timing belts the last couple weeks... This sparks a few ideas to refine my design!!! I love the custom details the you were able to add to the gears, shafts and bushings to make them work for you. That's the type of thing that was unattainable just a couple decades ago if you were in a home shop. Once again, awesome design John.

Truly an artsy happy seat cover. The whole enchilada. Wonderful design that looks easy to rest inside, like a cockpit of sorts. Awesome working out the necessary delineation of mechanisms. Damn I wish I could think and reason through snags like you do. I’m impressed with your 3 D printing process; you make every twist and turn seem easily worked through. The function of the raised foot rest is remarkable to behold and it looks like sitting in your chair is a reward like dream. Looking for reasons to use that fancy seat cover. It’s great to see you produce all the parts you need and I’m thankful you intend to incorporate wooden gear parts. Congratulations John. You rung the bell again!!!

(My wife does not like it when my projects have to be finished up in our living space, but she’s almost gotten used to me after ~1/4 of a century.) 😬 I was waiting for a knob you could clip into the holes to turn the wheel… the kind of knob they used to have on old pickup trucks and tractors. 🤣

Hi John. How your brain manages to come up with this stuff is beyond me, but it is extremely impressive. When you make the wooden gears why not make the control electric as well? It could be cool to have two preset positions, one for putting the feet on the rest and another one for resting your legs, and of course a third for returning the footrest to the folded away position. Merry Christmas 🎄

what if you make the gear teeth shaped like a raindrop, inlayed into the wood cog, then you could have all the teeth with the optimized grain orientation. the alternative would be some sort of segmented disks with enough segment that the grain doesn't turn substantially on the outer teeth of each segment.
