Super useful video. A point to note for viewers, the Snowflake on the tyre means they’re usable in Germany in winter. Many 4 season tyres aren’t actually legal in winter in Germany as they don’t have the snowflake symbol so haven’t met some EU standard. I run 15 inch Vredestein which are properly 4 season rates and are great, BUT 16 inch is the way to go for all the benefits John mentioned. John, you just cost me a grand 😉

Often stated on forums are that dedicated Camper tyres should be chosen (like Vancocamper from Continental) because they are designed to withstand being stood unused at home or in storage for long periods of time. Now I know that isnt a problem for full timers but do you think it might be an issue to consider with these tyres for the more occasional users out there?

Can you up the tyre pressure and park on tyre savers to reduce flat spots? What sort of mileage do you do John? I suspect none have done much in the last year anyway!
@tonytca94393 жыл бұрын
Average daily users very unlikely the tyres to last 10 years which is where most tyres are past their use by date. To enforce this i read recently that 7.5t and over must now have the tyres replaced at 10 years regardless of the tread due to rubber perish increasing the chance of a blowout. In any case its very bad for any vehicle to sit idle. Everything made of rubber on a 2001 or older very low mileage motorhome is trashed. The tyres, suspension bushes, bump stops, steering gators, drive shaft boots and timing belt and aux belts etc. Not to mention probably everything else has rusted from lack of use.

Always good to hear a first hand review, especially on tyres. I had 99% decided to switch to Michelin Agilis Alpin for next winter up here in the Scottish Highlands as I've watched videos and read reviews from quite a few Camerpvan'ers over in the colder Euro Winter climates suggesting they were up there with the best snow handling tyres during their Ski season..... and now you go and throw this spanner in the works haha. I've used BFGs extensively during my 12 years living in South Africa, on 4x4 Toyota bakkies and an off road trailer, covering many 1000's of miles and they never missed a beat either on road or off road, however for sub zero / snow conditions up here in Scotland I was wondering if the Alpins would be a better choice......... decisions decisions ;) At least I have a few months before deciding, and as the current original Agilis on our Hymer Ayers Rock have only covered 5k miles there is no rush. Maybe I will swap to a couple of Heat Lithium first, an easier choice haha. Cheers, John.

We've had front wheel drive motorhomes for about 16yrs and only had to be towed off twice. If the grass or ground is wet or soft i always Reverse as all of your driving forces are on the front wheels if you drive forward all the weight transfer goes to the back and allows the front wheels to slip so if you Reverse the weight transfer stays over your driven wheels.

I can vouch for the strong side walls of these tyres, sorry "bad ass tyres". I have the same tyres on a Toyota Landcruiser Colorado, the truck weighs 2250 Kgs. I came out one morning and spotted one tyre was a bulging a just bit, I went to work and checked the pressures later on the way home. The one that was a bulging a bit was at 5 psi (I found a nail in the tread) but due to the stiffness of the sidewalls it didn't look properly flat. And it didn't wander or wallow when I drove it. Great tyres they last for ever, I've easily had well over 80,000 miles out of a set, and I don't hang around when driving. They grip like a certain waste substance stuck to a blanket, dry or wet. Good off road in the mud good in the snow, and even with the mid range aggressive tread no noticeable road roar. I've towed all sorts of vehicles out of muddy fields, a Peugeot estate car with caravan attached, Ducato van well loaded with tools Transit camper, all sorts. I towed one muppet who assured me his handbrake was off on his Transit 500 yards across a field with his rear wheels not turning. I didn't bother to stop, I had enough grip to cope! Great fun, great dollops of mud flying all over the place.

John the tps you just have to take the sensors out of you old wheels and put them into the new wheels and the van will recognize the sensor and you will have no light on the dash
@johnmandy3 жыл бұрын
Are they inside the wheels/tyres? So you’d need to take the tyres off the wheels to swap them over?
@dougjowle17783 жыл бұрын
Unless it uses the abs system, then they have no sensors. The basics...... Inflated tyres have a bigger rolling radius, so as you loose pressure on a tyre then that begins to rotate faster then the others.
@dougjowle17783 жыл бұрын
@@johnmandy the TPMS sensor is part of the tyre valve, interestingly they kind of use the valve stem as the antenna and if you put a metal valve cap on, it can interfere with reception

Hello John, really interested in this set up. Having these tyres would give so much more confidence both on the road and on park ups etc where terrain is soft etc. You say in one of the previous comments that you don’t carry a spare but ‘have several ways to repair punctures’!! Can you tell us what these are? Reason for asking is that we have the standard Fiat 16inch alloys on our Rapido with the Michelin camper tyres and carry just spare tyre (to cut down weight) and of course the puncture repair kit that Fiat provide. We had the puncture prevention treatment fitted to our old van (some sort of goo I think!) which I thought expensive (have been quoted £200 from MH/caravan dealer for new van) but haven’t had the chance, due to lockdowns to have this done to the new van, and wonder what your thoughts are on this? Any comments would be appreciated. Cheers

Hi John, about to order these 'bad ass' W&T but just before I do, did you bother with a spare & did they affect insurance please? Many thanks!

Did you need different wheel nuts

Only if you’ve swapped from steel rims to alloys.

BFG's are generally the tire to get. They also have a general following and fan club. Beach buggies, defenders ect have them. It's all about the name and white writing. Almost a fashion. For good reason, a strong tire. Look at old photos going back year's, the vw beach buggies run them.

Hi guys. I am elite wheels now about to have a set fitted! I was unsure about putting bfg’s on and your video was really useful although one supplier refused to put them on the van! Although I have to have the 130pcd size, were yours 118’s? I mentioned you and they gave me some discount so thankyou! I have to ask, who is Louise? 😂 hopefully see you at one of the meets this year.

Great review guys, love them wheels they look amazing and then the tyres really make it look fit for any purpose. You could probably do the dakar in that now. Hope you have a great week and Best wishes and stay safe and well to you both and your families ❤️ 💙 ❤️ 💙 ❤️

I think the Dakar might be a bit too extreme even for me 😝😀
