He was most often right, but not always. He far too often acted out of line, even when he was right. I love him to this day. He is great for tennis. His outbursts wouldn't have happened if he didn't have the passion that is within him. His 1984 season is probably the greatest of all time. Remember Johnny Mac always played the long game with chair umps. Challenge them in the smaller venues so he had leverage in the big ones. The announcers mentioning Ings and the US Open is a classic example. 80's tennis put a large amount of pressure on chair umpires to get their work up to snuff and rightfully so. Up until the 80's most chair umpires never really took the time to improve themselves. With Connors, McEnroe, Wilander, and a few others putting on the pressure, they did. Now the pressure has flipped back to the players by giving them a chance to overrule via the computer.

McEnroe was always 1000% right when he made outbursts. That's why he considered these incidents such injustices: because not only did he know he was right, he was so obviously and clearly right everyone in the entire venue knew it too. There were plenty of calls against him, even bad calls, that he didn't make any outburst about. He only called out injustices when they were truly egregious and deserving of it. Good for him standing up for what's right. He was literally standing there at the line ready to play. Ings clearly made a bad call motivated more by "standing up to McEnroe" than calling the game properly.

Disagree, and its Becker's right to start serving, to start the point. Everyone who knows about Boris Becker, knows about his ritual before he serves, which John is right, is about ten seconds. Had Boris done that, and McEnroe was looking another direction, THEN there could be a legit argument made that John was delaying. Instead, Boris was doing this dramatic schtick, of looking behind him, then forward, then behind, looking for John to acknowledge him that hes ready. You can say John was a lil rude for not sticking his racquet up, to signal hes ready, but he doesnt HAVE to do that to prove hes ready for the serve. Instead of Hollywooding it, Becker should have went into his routine, and McEnroe would have played the point. Simple as that. Regardless of all of this, I think the way it looked, and how John stated his side, I think Ings should have been able to admit he was wrong, and waived the penalty.

Mac was completely right in this case. He was standing in place to receive serve. There was no reason for Becker to not serve. Mac wasn't preventing Boris from serving. There is no rule about how you have to stand to receive serve. Becker ALWAYS took forever to serve, even after starting his routine. With the clock now, Becker would have been penalized over and over again, and Mac would have been getting freebies for violations. John was over the top way too much in his career, but there were a lot of cases in which his outrage was justified. This is one of them.

Well, McEnroe himself normally took a lot of time before he served. But I personally believe that in this case it was basically a misunderstanding. Becker thought apparently that there were people moving in the stands, that's why he turned around to the crowd, who were delaying things and preventing McEnroe from being ready to receive. So, he obviously thought at least that McEnroe was not ready to receive. Maybe this was just acting from Becker's part in order to provoke a code violation for McEnroe. John normally stood very upright when he played and hardly bent his knees on his strokes. But I am not sure, what really was the case.

In this incident, Becker MIGHT have initially thought there might be people moving around in the stands, but after one look, that possibility was gone. THEN, he KEPT acting like it might be people moving around in the stands, when he knew that wasn't the case. McEnroe never indicated that people moving around in the stands was an issue. He never hinted at it. Becker was playing into Mac being pissy, and it was just as bad as Mac overreacting to the previous line call. Being dishonest in your actions is not justified by the other player overreacting to a call.

He did things like that at many other occasions, too.

I have changed my opinion, in regard to my previously-posted comment, about the controversial moment in the McEnroe versus Becker Paris Indoor match. McEnroe was absolutely right in his argument with chair umpire Richard Ings that Becker after bouncing the ball and then looking up, proceeds to take about 10 seconds longer before striking the ball on his serve, so McEnroe as he correctly argued, had plenty of time to bend down into position to receive serve! He rightly argued with Ings that why should he (McEnroe) have to bend down while Becker takes time going through his service preparation ritual!? There is nothing in the rules of tennis that states that the service returner has to be standing in a bent-down position throughout the server's pre-serve preparation ritual! It can, however, be rightly argued that it was not the usual thing for McEnroe to stand straight up awaiting his opponent's serve like he did at that controversial moment in the match in the 1989 Paris Indoor match against Becker, and that, therefore, Becker could rightly assume that McEnroe was not ready to receive serve.

Those were the days. It added spice to the game. Now if you look wrong its a ten thousand dollar fine. The only thing I can say is at times he took it to long. But he rules. Fantastic. Him and Connors. True rivalry. Now its political correctness. Just money and prestige. It was more real back then. Everything meant more. Now its fake. Mac was right, but as usual, he didn't handle the situation well. Becker showed real class when he told the officials that he does, in fact, take a long time to prepare his serve. He was defending Mac. They should've listened to Becker, but it seems officials are almost always intransigent about their calls.

Mac would make a good lawyer. Mac is only exposing the weaknesses (gray areas) in the rules of the game of tennis. Instead of learning to improve the rules with the help of Mac, they go against Mac and any change to the rules like a bible. This happens everywhere, not just on the tennis court.

The fiery one, Fred Stolle, and Cliff Drysdale, are all time great announcers. But they are wrong on this one and McEnroe was completely correct. He was ready to play. And Ings really is a good example of how bad umpires were back then. He made a horrible judgement. Yet again. Had I been Mac, I'd have told the supervisor, "You're the supervisor. SUPERVISE!!!"

Jack Kitchen the penalty point call really was a product of all the abuse the umpire took up until this time. He made the wrong call here. He should have penalised Mac, if he was going to, with a verbal warning for abuse earlier,

Mc Enroe was often right about calls. However as he has often admitted, he couldn't control his violent outbursts. His good friend Mary in commentary also states how poor his behaviour was. A legend of a player and a suberb tennis commentator - with a violent temper that did real damage to those around him - he admits it himself. ✌️

As much as Mac had a persecution complex I do agree with him here, Boris was stalling and its why they now have the serve timer because players were just taking however long they wanted. Unfortunately for John because of his reputation and history with that umpire Boris didnt have to do a thing to automatically have the ump on his side and it showed.
