This guy's technique is so underrated because of the Boom Boom cliché. He was volleying deep and to the lines, CONSTANTLY, and continuously changing effects on his backhand. He is remembered as a slow, powerful, emotional and competitive beast, but not for his outstanding variety of shots. Too bad he had such short fuses, that lack of speed and merely acceptable accuracy - the three things that made Sampras overpower him (and everyone else)

@dominikk85474 жыл бұрын
Players like Nadal and djokovic delay a lot but they also play 30 stroke rallies all the time because courts are slower. Back then the points were like 4 strokes at best usually so they don't need breaks

It was actually Lendl who started slowing things down between serves... In a way, even if they were not the most iconic players of the decade as The Big Three are now, it was Becker and Lendl who brought tennis from the wooden frame sport to the power tennis still prevailing now.

@garycolageo57092 жыл бұрын
Becker 1986 may've been even better.
@michaelbarlow66102 жыл бұрын
@@garycolageo5709 . I'd have to check Becker's 1986 record in terms of number of singles matches and tournaments won compared to his 1989 season. But 1989 was the only season in which he won two or more major singles titles (Wimbledon and the U.S. Open). Unfortunately, I have never been able to find a website that lists the best male and female players' season-by-season won/lost records in terms of matches and tournaments.
@jasoncowell51332 жыл бұрын
@@michaelbarlow6610 macs record greatest ever...82-3
@michaelbarlow66102 жыл бұрын
@@jasoncowell5133 Yes McEnroe's 82-3 season in 1984 remains the greatest single season in singles play in the open era in tennis history. But overall, Bill Tilden had a period of consecutive years in which he went undefeated. Of course back in the 1920's there were not as many tournaments during the year and there was no organized men's tour like in the open era. McEnroe at his peak in 1984 demonstrated, in my opinion, the greatest level of tennis play I have ever seen, with Sampras' level of play from 1993-1996/1997 a close second. It is a shame that McEnroe ridiculously regards Federer, Djokovic and Nadal as the three greatest male tennis players ever, failing to examine the underlying reasons why those three players accomplishments are so grossly disproportionate and inflated compared to the greatest players of the previous and earlier eras in tennis history. You would think he would know better!
