You can sharpen/strop cartridge razors using a leather strop, denim or just by using your forearm. There are people re-using their cartridge razors for over a year. You could use the same technique on safety razors as well although the savings wouldn't be anywhere near as much since safety blades are much cheaper. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3KnkoV_pt5jesU

I was given one from my mom for Christmas when I was 16 back in the 70's. Along with some old spice. (Still have that bottle with some of it in it still!) Had no instructions, no one to teach or guide me. I used that same razor all of my life. I do miss it now but its in good hands. My son turned down my offer to buy him a top of the line electric. He wanted mine! Now he's in the navy and it is his!

@Mike Dunning does happen if you are unfamiliar with it. So for me that means a couple times in the first 2 weeks. But when you know how to do it, the chance of cutting yourself is really low. Also if it cuts you, the pain is so minor you barely feel anything. Those cartridge razors I used to use tug like hell, everytime shaving is a torture, even if it leaves no blood at all. So I don’t care if I lose 5 drops of blood a year with a safety razor.

Also buying more blades for that razor is a lot cheaper too. With Harry’s no matter how many passes I went through wasn’t able to get the hair off near my Adam’s apple. With the safety razor, I was finally able to get the hair off completely shaved with a couple passes. I’m glad I made the switch.

I'm 63. I use my late father's Gillette safety razor made sometime in the mid 1950s, which he used every day for decades. It works GREAT, and the blades are CHEAP, but man oh man, do I get a GREAT shave every time. Modern cartridge razors are ridiculously expensive and don't shave as well. There's no reason to spend so much money when an old fashioned, double edged safety razor with ordinary bar soap will leave you with a smooth shave every time. I shave in the shower, with the water turned off of course after lathering up. The mess is all rinsed away when I rinse off, the water is already hot, the Dial soap is already all over my beard, and it works GREAT. Welcome back to the past, young men, don't throw money away on gimmick razors.

It seems to me that the disposables used to be good, but now they angle the blade so flat that it's impossible to cut yourself, but they'll do one shave but not two. And the multiblades are the same, one shave and then they clog up or something. Annoying. So, I (an oldtimer) decided to get a safety razor just like I had 20 yrs ago. And, lo and behold, everything is good. I don't have any trouble with cuts, shaving is completely easy, the single blade doesn't clog up, you can use it multiple times, .... definitely a win.

Good deal John. As you said, the big companies want to gouge the consumer with multiblade cartridge razors that don't even provide comfort much of the time. With a safety razor, you can shave daily if you like. No more dreading shaving. I switched to DE shaving about 3 years ago, but progressed to straight razors and shavettes. I wonder if you've also discovered shaving soap and a brush as well. Much more comfortable and certainly affordable. While many find that this turns into a costly hobby, it doesn't need to be. I got my first brush for around $15 on Amazon. You can find products at the local store, though the selection is limited. I also shave my head. There's a world of traditional wet shavers out there, and many groups on social media to get together. Welcome to comfort and savings.

I couldn't agree more. I switched several years ago and don't regret it. The blades are cheap and it's a close comfortable shave. A vintage Gillette flare tip is inexpensive and will last you a life time. But I have found a good shave soap also makes a big difference. I usually used Arko with a brush, now I'm using a product called Cremo shave soap. Use as directed or seen on KZbin. Blades are "generally" the same, but if you start using a safety razor get an assortment package from "Try a blade" and see what works for you.

I just started wet shaving and it definitely has a learning curve. What has helped me is using the the bar on the safety razor. I thought about the name and the bar is the safety part of the safety razor. I lean or press the bar (that is in front of the blade) against my skin, then find the blade angle. Other common sense steps need to betaken such as making sure the face is very wet, (make sure face is very wet before adding shaving cream) or a pre-shave oil is used before adding the shaving cream. I love shaving this way, hope this was helpful

It was then I figured how ignorant I was thinking the cartridge razors I've been shaving with, in a short time turn dull, but havent felt it. What I failed to observe is the triple blades do the trick but think the razor is still good to go. Think of slicing a potato using a grater that has one blade and another that has more than one. The latter may seem efficient but it actually rips the potato as they turn dull compared to the dullness of the single slicer which is what happens to the skin. Been a year since I switched to DE and not only I save quite a sum, I also get to protect my face skin most importantly.

Vander Hagen is extremely mild or, I dont want this to sound bad but it is not very efficient. As a starter Razor I really recommend a Merkur 34 C. Not extremely agressive but does the job very well with a 3 pass shave. I recommend watching "Kevy Shaves and Paul H films, also Ken Surfs to learn about blades, razors and techniques. DE shaving must be learned. And takes patience.

Great vid! Also important point is we throw away billions of plastic disposable shavers every year, and three are a great way to reduce waste . 👍🏻

Great video mate. And welcome to the "Dark side" - just be openminded and remember to experiment 👍🏻

An additional plus about these safety razors is the fact it is less plastic waste.

Those are not “novelties”. My dad had one of those, my grandfather had a straight razor; they passed on but their shaving “novelties” still work.

I'm thinking of swapping to a safety razor but can I ask if you actually *need* a brush and soap? Would shaving foam suffice?

Switched about 3 years ago. There is no going back. I really don't understand how the hell cartridge razors got so popular.
