The thing that I like about PRS vs a lot of the guitar manufacturers IMO is their quality control and consistency. I used to work at a guitar shop and there were rarely any PRS guitars, whether their top line Private Stock down to SE models,j that weren't set up correctly. They all played well and all very similarly. You hear a lot of those stories with Gibsons and Fenders where you have to play all of them to find "the one" (and when you do they're fantastic, I've had quite a few).. but with PRS they're all very good.

I think most people just associate PRS with the custom 24 because that is their most famous model. But I never fell in love with that model. The first PRS that made me fall in love, was the Special 22 semi-hollow. Then I came across the Modern Eagle V and that’s when I was sold that PRS does make incredible sounding guitars. Those two guitars are the best PRS models I’ve ever tried.

I tried a Custom 24 about 10 years ago and did not like it. I assumed since that was their most popular model, PRS guitars were not for me. A few years later I tried a McCarty and fell in love. Fast forward to today and 3 of my 6 guitars are PRS (Silver Sky, McCarty 594, McCarty SC 594).

I've a 2012 PRS Studio which is built like a Custom 22 , with narrowfield pickups in the neck and middle positions and and a 57/08 Humbucker (splitable) in the bridge. It's a beautiful guitar - with a pattern thin neck, reminds me a bit of the 1960's LP carve but maybe even more comfortable. It's got a great range of sounds and although not a guitar for every occasion, it is a swiss army knife - suitable enough for most. I think you are spot on - it's finding the guitar that is right for you. I've watched videos of people complaining about PRS not having "Mojo" and then run through 50 Les Pauls before finding the one that speaks to them. I think this is the case with most guitars. In PRS' case, quality is less of a worry and finding the model(s) that are right for you is the challenge. Guitar is a very tactil experience for me and I don't really have one "thing". I've a number of guitars - Gibson, Ibanez, Gresch, Fender, D'Angelico, Squire, James Tyler, Taylor and others (a partscaster is a favorite) - each has their own flavor and job. I like them all, but I do have favorites and they are not like each other. I'm convinced the Mojo is your relationship with the tactile feel and the sound you want. And that's different for each of us.

I have an PRS S2 singlecut 2019 and PRS SE McCarty 594 and love them both. They feel and sound great. I think the only reason people say silly stuff like PRS has no "mojo" is the guitar heroes of the past generations played Fender and Gibson. If PRS had been around in the 1950, 1960 and 1970 decades, then Richards, Clapton, Moore, Page and others would have played them and we would never hear that silly crap about "mojo" again. PRS makes guitars that sound and play great.

I love your channel and your down to earth feedback, not to mention amazing playing. I've only been playing for a year, started out with a Squier Strat, then Epiphone LP, upgraded to a Fender Strat AM Pro II, but after watching some of your previous videos (and various reviews) I bought a PRS SE Paul's Guitar from Peach Guitars online based on your recommendation of them. I live in Kuwait, so guitar shops and choices are very limited, and Peach Guitars had amazing customer service and shipping. I must say this guitar has become my favorite (even more so than my American Fender which costs twice as much) both in terms of feel and sound, which is amazing for an SE. I can't imagine how much better their new S2s will be or their Core models (saving up for those to buy in a few years). It got me hooked on PRS guitars, so I bought a PRS SE Hollowbody II which is another great feeling and sounding guitar. It's still early in my guitar playing journey, but I'm hooked on PRS guitars and will probably keep buying them in the future (craving an S2 McCarty and much later on a Special Semi-Hollow).

Hey John. Thank you for this Video. I’ve owned a few PRS higher end Guitars and for some reason I just couldn’t Bond with them. Same thing with the Gibson Les Paul Custom Shop Guitars. I ended up selling all my PRS Guitars and Gibson guitars as well. Yesterday I was at my Local Guitar Shop and I had tried several Gibson Standards but they were just so heavy that I couldn’t get comfortable with them and couldn’t get a sound or a presence I enjoyed. Funny thing is I picked us a used PRS SE Custom and it just felt so good in my Hands and the Sound IMHO sounded so much more Alive and Powerful. This Surprised me as I’ve always Gravitated towards the Higher end Guitars with the mindset that the more you pay the better the Guitar. The PRS SE Custom that I played has Definitely made me rethink somewhat at how I look at my Guitar Buying. I know the SE line will never be a good Collector Guitar but some of them definitely has a nice sound and Playability.

My first PRS was “what was then called” a Standard, bought new in 1985, so I’ve been an aficionado since their first production year. I currently own several, including a few very high end models: 594, Silver Sky, and a Wood Library Custom 24. They have knocked it out of the park with their SE guitars. My Zach Myers SE cost me $700 USD used, and I gig with it all the time. Besides being a great guitar, it was a huge bang for the buck.

That is a stunning guitar. After having had some time with this, I wonder if anything is going to stand out with your DGT. I loved everything about the SE-DGT except that lower horn bevel - for upper fret access. I'm not big 'above-the-15th' player - but when I did get up there it just felt conspicuously awkward - obtrusive. I ended up returning it ...reluctantly. Other than the upper fret access, the SE DGT is probably the best guitar for that price range.

I have a few PRS guitars and love them all. My favorite neck of theirs is the Pattern Vintage. That said the guitars themselves play amazing and sound great. Sometimes I feel like they could use a pickup swap but that could just be me as I consistently change things and suffer from G.A.S. (Sounds weird saying that). Anyway I have a Gibson Les Paul and two Fender Strats but find myself playing my PRS daily and at every gig. That is not the case for the Gibson or Fender. Take that as you will. Love the channel and your playing.

As a company, PRS appears to care more about its workers than Fender/Gibson. Also the fact that it highlights on the SE series the actual company producing its guitars under license. In so doing, PRS is the type of company I want to see more of, so I purchase it's products in the hope PRS continues caring about more than just the bottom line (at least that's my impression). How nice if the other big companies followed the PRS example, but they are so big-- and have been for so long-- that it's not likely. Favorite PRS models? The DGT, and CE24. I'd LOVE to own a "Paul's Guitar" for the unique mini-humbuckers, or the new non-signature Tele (NF54?) again for its unique pickups but those would simply be the icing on the cake ;)

My favorite PRS? My S2 Vela in Vintage Mahogany - direct into the amp, it sounds like a great recorded telecaster, but thanks to the pickups, coil split, etc. there's a lot more than that tone under the hood. Nearly always the guitar I grab to "do the thing" when I'm recording.

I have had several SE models. The SE DGT and HB standard piezo changed my view on all the previous SE’s I owned. I then used them (and a bunch of other gear) to get 10+ year old beat up core models of the dgt and HB 1. Couldn’t be happier with that choice. LP will be sold. If the Strat and Tele weren’t Partscasters, I would probably sell them too.

Owned several, but keep coming back to my 2001 McCarty Soapbar, great neck (wide fat), dot inlays, replaced pickups with Throbaks, replaced pots, Bumblebee cap, refinished in satin nitro. For trem use I have a DGT ('stunt guitar'), but play it a lot less. Sometimes I doubt if the 25" scale, with the brass bridge appointments to be the cause of some refined/modern-ness twist on the sound vs Gibson.

I got mine at launch but to see them with the big discounts at the end of 2023 makes me think it’s possibly the best all round guitar on the market at any price point. Coil taps, articulate pickups, great neck and stunning looks/finish. My Les Pauls are 60s necks but the fatter 594 SE neck just feels amazing (ie better than any Gibson 50s neck I’ve tried)

PRS is such strong competition that its critics can only make fashion arguments against the brand now -- that it's a generally lifeless, boring, uninspiring guitar. It's been an absolute gamechanger brand that has even brought other "boutique" US brands, e.g., Suhr, Kiesel, Collings, onto the radar for more affluential guitar consumers not in the vintage instrument game. And so PRS is probably the most effective evidence that the average musician experiences music in a synesthetic way -- i.e., listens with both eyes & ears -- and Blues Traveller for one made this argument in a music video nevermind, say, the US pop & country music industry in general which relies heavily on "anonymous" but immensely talented pro studio musicians using whatever they have at hand to create music at the highest levels, e.g., James Jamerson who purportedly rarely changed strings, only ever used one or several poorly set up & mass produced electric basses, and usually just went straght into the recording desk or whatever he was told to plug into. So yeah, art seems to be something that appeals from the outset to prejudices & preconceptions including which artists & what tools have the right to make it thanks for one to this cooperative sensing of our own experiences. Hence guitarists mostly aspiring not proficient nevermind pro will likely not realize no matter how many times you play the same licks & produce the same sounds with a myriad of different guitar shapes, brands, colors, etc to drive home what matters most when it comes to making music that you are having fun trolling us. But don't get me wrong. I think you should because to become conscious of our own synesthetic experiences ultimately makes those experiences feel so much richer and the art so much more precious -- much as both hearing & seeing your daughter eating fulfills you spiritially.

I got a 594 SE and its sensational. I got it on a very very good deal. Feels and sounds like a modern lighter improved take on a Les Paul. I don't adore the way it looks (ideally all guitars would look as good as a jazzmaster) but the more I play it, the more I appreciate that it is its own thing. Chasing the "classics" of a bygone era instead of enjoying the gems we have today is directly antithetical to what any of the "rock icons" were doing in their time. I think I might buy a few more. The soapbar SE looks very intriguing. The DGT seems like an instant modern-day classic.

I have A PRS Custom 22 SE. It's semi hollowbody. I do like the neck, think it's the 'wide fat', color, weight of it & the general feel of it. What I have a problem with is the tone of the pickups. They are really strong to me & have seem to have a lot of mids. I've thought many times I'd just get rid of it but keep holding on to it. After some research, I found that some have just lowered the pickup - neck pickup is the main culprit - I did that, lowered it quite a bit actually, & it really helped so far. I think I like it too much to just sell it so I'm still working with it. Even the main preset I use on my Helix, I have to l adjust it specifically to use with that guitar so I created a PRS version of it.

But here's the thing. My early CE( bolt on) is not perfect in every way, but it is the best designed and built guitar that I've ever bought. I'm sure some other guitar out there is my soulmate, by why should I wander the world searching for true love, when it's simpler at my relatively low level of proficiency, to adapt my playing to suit the guitar, why not love the one you're with rather than thinking the grass is always greener elsewhere. On a serious note, as soon as I played this instrument the way it was designed to be used,( thru a warm amp, but with the volume down for low gain parts) it started to sound amazing. Having done most of my early learning ( by accident during long out of it garage-band jams) on strats or Teles, I was used to playing hard snd putting all the character you could into what are more neutral sounding ( singlecoil axes). My playing on Les Psuls was the same learning curve, you just have to play certain guitars a certain way to coax the best out of them. Constantly seeking the "one", is , to me a very first-worldish sort of thing, ( not if you're in a position to do it) but it's easier to adapt yourself than look for domething better; but you're married, so you get that,( then again , as withe SE DG little cheapie on the side, if it works go for it I say. Today's Sermon comes to you courtesy of guitar-a-holics infamous.orgy. As long as you play those sweet intros, I listen to anything you say!

I've come around to the PRS guitars after being very frustrated with the "other" brands..... I am also preferring a "Wide Fat" neck profile. Just got the 3rd generation SE Santana model (new-to-me). 22 fret with more of the Santana signature shape, but with 22 fret neck & the older SE Santana control layout, which I prefer. Great sounding & playing guitar that was super affordable! I have 1 Core 1st generation McCarty (it now lives at my Son's house...early coil taps were not very usable....) & 4 SE models, with the Santana & the Paul's guitar being favorites...and I do enjoy the 277 Baritone!

I’m a PRS guy. I bought my custom 24 in 2016 for £2750. It’s a lovely guitar with quality parts though I did have to send it back from the uk to the USA to be fixed because the finish had problems on the neck. I would never pay 4k though, it’s just too much. Absolutely go for the SE range which have come on a long way since the early 2000s. I think the CE range is really good also. Don’t pay 4 grand for a guitar….my favourite guitar is actually an awful PRS SE from 2009 when they were pretty bad. It has a fatter neck and I painted and modded it with a JB humbucker and a Dimarzio Crusier and sounds amazing.

I've not changed my mind about PRS guitars as a whole, but have come to appreciate at least a few models. Specifically the 245 and McCarty .594 singlecut standard. They have an oldschool vibe and familiar controls. Very simple layouts that feel comfortable to me. All the other PRS models I've tried felt awkward and just had me scratching my head? Sitting there trying to figure out how all the knobs, switches and puckups work?

As long as it has a Pattern or Pattern Vintage neck, I know I'll enjoy it. The McCarty 594 Hollowbody II has been the dream guitar for some time, but the Semi-Hollow Special 22 has also caught my eye lately!

I had a PRS SE Custom 24 for a year. I bought it after my 8 year break from guitar. I liked it for a while, but after trying other guitars, it sounded dark and muddy to me. So I sold it. But I did play a S2 Standard which was really nice. Unfortunately the strings were rusty so I couldn't fully enjoy it, but I was really impressed with the tone. I definitely need to try out some higher end PRS guitars, but I kinda don't want to because of their prices.

PRS guitars are really well made instruments. The good thing is, there are many used ones out there. So you can find a used one for much less than what a new Standard Gibson costs. The wide fat and the DGT necks are great.

Still have my 2002 Custom 24 with HFS and VB pickups and will never get rid. The bridge pick up is certainly hot but suits high gain v well. Bridge pick up does Gary moore sound v well and it holds tune like no other guitar I have, and I have many expensive guitars. Also I would say the PRS trems are the best around bar none. Beautifully made and when i look back to paying just over £2000 in 2002 , I think this is far better than most other brand custom shop standards.

Beautiful guitar. I've got a Custom 24 SE that I've never fallen in love with - although it's stunning to look at and plays quite nice. Lately I've been brewing the idea that I need a Silver Sky - even though I've got 5 Strats. Thanks for the video John.

I'm a Fender guy and was looking for another guitar for a different sound ( NO I WON'T GET RID OF MY 🇺🇸 STRAT) . So I checked out Gibson, forget it and PRS American and Asian and I didn't like the feel of the guitars. So I decided to check out a Mex telecaster and modify it...they were ok , then I checked out an 🇺🇸 professional 2 telecaster and it is the guitar for me, it fits my hands like a glove. Well a few months later I was in the music store and checked out an Ibanez prestige asz and I was pleasantly surprised to see that this guitar is definitely a guitar for me ( after checking out different guitars I didn't think that I would like the Ibanez) . Squire sucks as far as I'm concerned, the necks are trash

My main guitar is a 2008 Core Mira. I used to hate on PRS cause the birds. Once I got an SE in a trade and played it I quickly realized how easy they are to play. I’m a huge fan now They’re guitars (all the ones I’ve played) play so easily. I don’t have to fight it or retune or always set it up.

I have 2 SE's - A Standard 24 and a McCarty 594 double cut, both almost flawlessly made and set up from new. The cheaper Standard 24 may be even better made than the McCarty 594 so at half the price is a really, really great guitar. Both different sounding but equally good. I love the wide thin neck of the standard 24, it is so easy to play, the only slight downside of this thinness is that it seems to move more with temperature changes than the thicker neck of the McCarty 594 and needs more frequent 'tweaking' of the neck relief.

I bought and sold 4 or 5 PRS' until I actually tried a Custom 24-08 , which stuck. And even that was after they had TCI pickups. In the past it was always the pickups that turned me off. ALL SE levels for me. BUT, I still do have more Gibsons (5), Yamaha (2), Fender/Squier (2/1). Heck I have as many specialty guitars like a Line6 JTV- Variax, and Danelectro electro-resonator as the one PRS. So, it isn't that I changed my tune on PRS, just that I finally found one that gel'ed with me.

PRS S2 Custom 22 was my very first electric guitar, which was a little a little unfair to the guitar because I didn’t know how to play and I sure didn’t know anything about guitar tone as a newbie…ended up selling it because I thought I could find something that sounded better when undoubtedly the problem was me, lol. Mostly play Fender and Gretsch now but I have always loved the looks of the PRS guitars and would love to pick up another one of some kind or another at some point. I personally have always loved the PRS birds and the colors. Haven’t found an LP yet that made me feel like I just had to have it.

For some reason I could never get on with them and I had about 5 (trying to find 'The One.' ) I think it's the scale length. The guitars are extremely well made with incredible wood, workmanship and they sound great. A lot of tonal options too. Still can't figure out why.

I have a 2008 Custom 24. I changed the pickups some years ago. It stays in tune for days and I love the feel of the neck. For studio work, the 5 way rotary makes it very flexible. I also have a JM Silver Sky, which I was not planning on getting, but it was the best Strat guitar I tried (and I tried a lot) when I was looking for a Strat. That has my favourite neck.
