Was it a plant?? Don't think so since it caught Carson off guard (he turned his head away from the camera). You have to remember back in those days on the Tonight Show. They didn't need a plant to make or break a skit. That wasn't Johnny Carson's way. Besides. There were more applause for Ed than the woman. Just another bad skit with a great ad lip one liner (from the audience). Since the audience in those days respected The Tonight Show crew since The Tonight Show didn't think their viewers were stupid. Carson made sure of that since that boy who grew up in Norfork, NE never left him.

Johnny was a great host, and also a great performer in the bits he performed with either a staff member or a guest. I found his interviews to be very good. What was most amazing was how well he could interview a guest. Whether it was a comedian constantly joking, a person or celebrity very uncomfortable on a talk show, or a guest with some strong opinions, Johnny could respond and react to the jokes, interact well with the uncomfortable guest, and talk with the opinionated guest in a back and forth without creating a tense, argumentative situation. Sad that he's gone. Great that these clips are here to remember him.

Ok to add my 10 cents to this: this was also during the time that Carson was trying to get back into the show. This wasn't too long after a Wall Street Journal article that Johnny was losing his edge. He was still winning but losing the important 18-34 demo. There was a news conference that was held at The Beverly Hilton where Johnny's braintrust came out and told everyone he was still the king of late night. Basically he was but was losing to a younger demo that was watching David Letterman. Over the following years it got worse when people were just watching him to get to Letterman. Plus cable and stations around the country started delaying Johnny to air Love Connection or other shows because they could make $$ before airing The Tonight Show. In the end: Johnny was just trying to get some life back in the show. He and Ed were more than friends and Ed wrote a book after Johnny had died. Loosen up people they were soul brothers before the term had ever been coined.....

Ed wasn’t in the studio when Wayne Newton barged into Carson’s dressing room, jacked him up against the wall and said he would return and beat him to death if he told one more joke inferring that Newton was gay.
