I came to the Lord about 40 years ago. I will never forget that one week after I accepted Christ, I was laid off from my job and within a couple weeks, I was down to my last dollar with no food and living at a friend's. EVERY DAY that week, someone called me up and asked if I would like to come have dinner with them. That was my assurance that He is ALWAYS there even in the bad times. It also helped me turn from a life where all that mattered was what I possessed. He has been there through every good time and every bad. When I was laid off from a job, it might have been weeks or months, but somehow the next step was something better for me. I'm now in my late 60s, but I know everything I have will be dirt. I feel you brother. As a recovering opioid addict, this song, of all the drug themed songs out there, hits really hard. Trent wrote this song at 19 or 20, so I see that as a cry for help, which I relate to. But now that I'm much older (started using in my early 20s, now I'm in my 40s), I get, partly, what Cash's version means. Like many others have said, Trent was crying for help, Cash was recollecting on regrets, but both come from the same source. Both versions leave me sobbing like a widow. Amazing how a song can affect people like that. I hope you're still doing well, brother. "I hurt myself today to see if i still feel" is a metaphorical line implying the review of a memory. It's illustrated by using self harm, though the "hurt" itself is just a memory. Not a physical act of self harm.
@roberthoughton71274 жыл бұрын
Whoa. Didn’t even think of it that way. Makes sense.
@Atomsk4844 жыл бұрын
@@roberthoughton7127 a lot of the colorful symbolism contained in Trent Reznor's music was written to evoke this kind of powerful imagery, though it eludes to a more relatable form of turmoil. Like when he says "i wear this crown of shit upon my liars chair. Full of broken thoughts i cannot repair" he's talking about the rose colored lenses with which we view our past through. How we structure our memories in a flattering light in order to lessen the pain. Both our own pain and the pain we cause others. It fractures those memories like a broken mirror. He's admitting that he's watered down those memories to make them easier to wade through, but they aren't truthful. But its to the point now that he doesn't really even remember the actual events anymore. It's become irreconcilable with the truth. The point of the song, as far as i can gather, is that he's admitting that he's an unreliable narrator and that uses these doctored memories to indulge in his pain. It's absolutely about self harm. Just not physical. It's mental anguish. He's indulging in torturing himself. At the end when he said "i would keep myself. I would find a way" he's saying that he would trade those memories that he uses to hurt himself for peace. Essentially, he would erase those experiences altogether.

I commented on someone elses breakdown of this song and just wanted to put the same comment here because I think it's still relevant. The NIN (original) version that Cash covered was written by Trent, alone in his room, fighting with his own demons. You can see that his interpretation of the song is quite different but also very similar. Johnny built an empire with his fame and in the video you see him surrounded by all this wealth and extravagance which to him means nothing at this point in his life. Throughout the video you see flashbacks of his life. It's like watching him die because the flashes of his life are going past and at the end, he is this old man closing the lid of the piano and music is his whole life. So for music to have been his whole life and him to be surrounded by all these incredible things and to still have such a strong theme of regret in the way that he emotionally applied the lyrics of this song, it's almost cripplingly sad. "You could have it all, my empire of dirt." His daughter on seeing this video said "Dad it's like you are saying goodbye." He responded, "I am." He died shortly after recording and shooting this video.

One of my favorite songs by far......listen to it quite often when reflecting on my life and everything I need to make right. Trent Reznor was flattered when Jonny Cash requested permission to cover his most personal song... “Trent Reznor remembers the first time he saw the video for Johnny Cash's cover of his 1994 song "Hurt." "Tears started welling up," he said. "I realized it wasn't really my song anymore. It just gave me goose bumps up and down my spine. It's an unbelievably powerful piece of work.”

"everyoen goes away in the end" with the photo of Mother Maybelle Carter, who was an early supporter of John and helped him come to the Lord. This video moved so far beyond the NIN song that they truly are two different songs. Trent Raysor, the writer, said seeing the video made him realized the song was no longer just his. He'll grow into the Cash version, if he's blessed with a long life.
@cozmiccow99362 жыл бұрын
Both versions of this song hit so deeply on so many different levels. For Johnny's version, we see a man at the end reflecting upon his life wondering if he was the man he should/could have been. In Trent's version, we see a young man trying to cope with the pain of living and contemplating ending it. With the exact same lyrics. This song is relatable in different ways depending on where you are in life, what's important to you, and what your experiences have been.

As I approach the final times of my life ( I'll be 87 in November) and I try to validate my existence, I look back at the path of my life. My sweet wife of 26 years, Janet, died of brain cancer. I had spent the last year of her life attending to her needs, 24/7. I was angry at God for taking her first. ( I am 12 years her senior) A typical "Why Me" response. I had no reason to live...until my Hospice Grief Counselor (Joanie) found out that I used to write poetry to my wife and she encouraged me to continue writing. This all led me to music. Appreciate the reaction. Not to take away from Cash, the video and idea was brought by Rick Ruben, the same video producer that produced NIN's Closer video and worked on other NIN projects. He recommended Cash do a more simple version, using mainly 3 or 4 chords on guitar. The NIN version uses some crazy chord variations, and of course, is about loss, but more about Trent's self loathing and addiction with heroin. Of course, Trent is now clean, put on about 100lbs of muscle, married and has 5 kids. Would really love to see someone react to a HD live version of Trent's Hurt with full production. It's just amazing to turn the meaning and reflect on Trent's life and success.

"acquainted with grief" its an interesting passage and it made me think of a line in a song by prog metal band Pain of Salvation "Seeing guilt has taught her guilt she's raised on disbelief Merely twenty beautiful but with a taste for grief She has learnt all that there is to know about hopelessness Seeing that no effort in this world can stand her test" The song is called Rope Ends. As the title and lyrics might indicate in the micro sense (its part of a concept album so there is a larger macro story at work) its about suicidal depression. So its very interesting that the grief lines are so similar. When you look at the cross (literal and figurative) that Jesus had to bear, its a wonder that his outlook on humanity was not complete hopelessness. Just a musing from a Deist/Theist perspective.

Yes, Trent Reznor wrote this and Nine Inch Nails recorded it in 1994. Johnny recorded it just a few months before he passed in 2003. It was the last recording he made and I am totally convinced he knew his time here on earth was very near over. When Trent heard this version he said "This is Johnny's song now".

Hearing this with you reacting to it made me think about Saul in Samuel in his last days. He definitely went from the anointed king to losing everything. The lyrics with empire of dirt made me of think how the kingdom was taken from him. He went through madness, depression, loss, and only at the end did he see that he was alone. Powerful

I wanted more at the end great reaction. This song gets me everytime. You never know someone's struggles doesn't matter where we start it's where we end. We all struggle and we all go through it some more than others. But with faith you know in the end you will be in Heaven. We think we will be happy with a new vehicle or a bigger house but doesn't work that way It's our sinful nature to be glutinous and greedy but in the end it's just an "empire of dirt".

Trent Reznor's version of this song was instrumental to my life when dealing with the fallout from my fiancée's suicide during a time when the church actively chased me away for asking too many tough questions. Ultimately, I hit the bottom of the spiral, and I found God at the end of a shotgun barrel. I think I've been back to church five times since then, three times of which were for funerals, and yet I feel like my faith is now stronger than it ever was when I was in the pews every week. Johnny's version of it here, as you've stated, hits so much harder. In response to Gage's analysis of Cash "making it his own," I've often said that Reznor created a masterpiece, but Cash aged it to perfection and bottled it. Thank you for this. I would also like to echo the requests for Nine Inch Nails "Closer to God," as well as Brad Paisely/Allison Kraus "Whiskey Lullaby"

This song makes me cry every time. You can feel the hurt in his voice. ❤ such a heavy song for me and one of very few covers I prefer over the original

This was a wonderful reaction. It's rare that i see someone analyze it as thoroughly as this, whether through a Christian lens or not. Thank you! I echo someone else below and recommend that you take a look at Heilung. But make sure you react to their live FIFA concert so that you can get the important visuals as well. I actually suggest you watch the entire concert to get the flow and to see the amazing instruments 😂, but lyrically, you're going to want to review Krigsgaldr.

Good analysis & deep conversation. Regretting things in the past, this has been my greatest struggle. I constantly dwell on what I've done, shouldn't of done, should of done, could've done to save them if maybe I had done it this way or that way. Keeps me awake at night reworking through them in my mind. Apparently sometimes I'm talking out loud according to my wife. I thought atleast those incidents from decades ago would go away w/ time. Makes me want to sleep it away during the day to take a break from dwelling on them. But the worst is it makes me scared to take action in the present which has further fueled the cycle. The only time I've felt relief was when I was using. But now I can feel decent relief when I'm purely in the present usually when dedicating myself to helping others, doing a creative project or in spiritual study, prayer or mediation. I just pray that 1 day before I leave this shell behind I can feel truly peaceful waters in my mind just once more, even for just a moment.

This reaction hit me more than any reaction you’ve done. Not that the others aren’t good, they are, but just turning 50 and battling so many what if’s and regrets, this one really hit home. 50 is just a number, but I know I’m well into the second half of the book God has written fo me. I haven’t been handling very well. Wish I could go back.

I was wondering why the heck you picked this after a long line of metal (and hope you do continue with metal) but yeah this was really good and glad you did. I'm fonder of the original NIN tho... Also.. Yup... [TOOL] Parabol/Porabola

Hey man, you and I are probably very different men in many aspects of life, but as long as we both can shed a tear over a song like that, we can remember that we're all fellow humans, and that's what matters.

Such a mic drop on an epic life...he made mistakes and you can see the consequences in the lines on his face and the look in his eyes. Closing the piano lid is so much like closing a coffin lid. We are watching him die. RIP Johnny.

I really want to thank you guys for your thoughts and discussions on various songs as well as the theological insights that you also provide. I have certainly learned a lot from you. This song has always been tough for me as it hits very close to home, through losing people due to death or pushing people away due to the toxic person I was for many years, I always tried to avoid listening to it. What I have learned over the years is to try to be better than I was yesterday, I see my solitary nature as karma for having so many opportunities to embrace people over the years but rejecting those out of convenience, it would be interesting to get a Christian viewpoint on karma. I don't class myself as an atheist or follow any faith but I do believe in a higher being so to speak.

This was one of the first songs that got me to learn guitar. It has left an immense impression on me, and has been with me as I've worked through dark parts of my life. I too, have an emotional reaction to it. You guys did it justice with the analysis. --- On another note, would you react to "The Game" by Gideon?

This song will forever be ingrained in my mind because of The Devil's Share. Possibly the greatest cold open to an episode of television ever created and it is set to this song in its entirety. Person of Interest was/is incredible and this song will always remind me of it.

Loved the analysis as always man, your videos are always one of the highlights of my week. You guys should check out Travesty by Haste The Day, Wrathbearer by Nodes Of Ranvier, or The New Breed by Oh, Sleeper. All three are excellent songs with great messages behind them.

Firstly, thanks for another great analysis! I like deep looks at music, and I’d do it with my friends if they were the type of people who were into that. Secondly, thanks for more or less being my church service during the pandemic. I believe I watched your Right In Two video shortly after it started. As someone struggling with their faith and a musician, it’s nice to have you guys around. Finally, I’ve been vibing with the song Grand Canyon by Puscifer. Another MJK work, and something I think you guys would like to listen too. Hope you guy’s are doing well!

I have a grandfather on my dad’s side who played guitar, but I unfortunately never heard him play, let alone see him a whole bunch till the day I helped bury him. My uncle has his guitar and I asked him, since he heard him play, about how good he was at playing and he replied with a “he was DAMN good.” Which, like I’ve said, is a shame I’ve never heard him play. He also, according to my grandmother, came across Elvis at a gas station before he was famous. Idk how they remember if that guy was him, but that’s what I was told. He also played with some country artists I haven’t heard of, so it made him seem like a Johnny Cash kind of grandfather to me, even though I haven’t known him a whole lot.

as someone who was pushed away from Christianity due to the hate against lgbtqia+ in my old churches, I really appreciate how yall can talk about your faith without pushing it in anyone's faces. Because I truly believe that for someone to come to faith properly requires understanding and just sharing the little seeds rather than forceful pushing and mass fear. I also admire how yall are willing to talk about "non-christian" songs and have dialogue.
