However at the time rock was in its infancy and was still looking to be established as a genre. Country had already been around for fifty years. They didn't know what to call Johnny's music. I first got into Cash when I was little right before passed on and I even met a former bus driver of his who told me some stories of how he meant well despite his flaws. After years of listening to other musicians, I finally got around to listening to his songs again and I'm surprised how poignant and beautiful they were lyrically. I'm in music school now and anytime there's a concert where they ask the ensemble to wear all black dress clothes the joke of the day is always "Yup, it's Johnny Cash day on campus!"
