All these years and I still miss “Jumbo”! Al Hirt was my hero when I was a kid in the 1960’s learning to play the trumpet at 8 years old. Ann Margret referred to him as “Jumbo” on the record they made together. He was a great in more ways than just the trumpet.😊

That was special. I would have been about four when it was televised. If it was on I have no recollection. Thank you!

in the mid-60's, I was given an Al Hirt album as a birthday gift by my next door neighbors. At the time, I was in middle school (junior hi, we called it then), and playing cornet. I played that album about a thousand times, and played right along with it. Later, I gathered a number of Al's other albums and upon entering college, switched to trumpet. I managed to play along with a number of his songs, my favorite being Carnival of Venice. I actually did a passable rendition, if I do say so myself. What an honor for the "challenger" to have played alongside Al Hirt. On Al's Carnegie Hall concert album, the back of the record jacket mentioned that Al had said something like he was "going to play all night long". So, the jacket said, "If Al Hirt ever plays in Alaska, it would be worth the cost to go - because their nights last six months!" Still haven't gotten my Al Hirt signature trumpet. Maybe someday! Thanks for posting this. New sub.

I'm a big Herb Alpert fan but also an Al Hirt fan, too. Al was a classically trained trumpeter and virtuoso and played Carnegie Hall in the 1960s.

Don't forget Doc. I remember when Al was in a New Orleans parade and someone threw a piece of brick, hitting Jumbo in the mouth. When Doc heard about it in California, he called Al to check up on him. Al's comment is supposed to have been, "Doc, how did you throw that brick and get back to California so fast?" Great players, great compatriots.

@@jasonstarr6419 I know that after that terrible incident Al said he wouldn't participate in the Mardi Gras parade anymore because the city had become too dangerous. That was decades ago and things are arguably worse in NO nowadays.

That's a good way to start a fight, pardner!!! lol.... the same sort of argument can be made about Al vs. Doc Severinsen. Having listened to recordings by both of them along with recordings from many other trumpeters (Maynard Ferguson comes to mind) as well, I'd say choosing which is "better" is more likely either focusing on a particular aspect of play or style combined with personal taste. Oh, Harry James, too.
