Awesome recording from Cash. I think its way stronger than Neils original. Cash adds more soul and a darker touch to it.

I loved this song ever since I first heard Neil Diamond do it live and (God help me) I had no idea Johnny Cash had covered it and covered it so well, that it takes on a completely different but just as intoxicating identity all it's own. Cash was a genius. Not many performers can carry other people's songs off like he could, and God, do we miss him for it.

lol, I hate to necro a great thread....but whether which version was best or not matters not. The American recordings of Johnny Cash remain some of the best five volumes of covers in music history. Well produced and they are a treasure, if your a true music fan, give them a listen.

In that spark of thought, yes, thank you Neil Diamond. I remember hearing his version first. Then Cash --- and it was a new feeling altogether. Bob Dylan and Joan Baez often towered along with each other's version of the same titles / songs too. Anais Nin was right: "we don't see the world as it is, we see the world as WE are." Thanks for keeping an eye on the respect of homage.

Penetrating ! Through his music, Cash did not ever seem to brush-off a frightening or uncomfortable feeling. If Earth is the car and passenger, Cash seems to me the taxi driver who sees it all. Takes boldly the ride though lonely nights where you face only yourself in the mirror as you drive....drive.....drive, and become a philosopher the hard way.
