Thanks for getting to this one, Craig. Ira Hayes was a victim of the time of how Native tribes were seen and treated in that time. The lyrics will always enrage me. "Ira started drinking hard and jail was often his home. They'd let me raise the flag and lower it like you'd throw a dog a bone." He experienced what most of us can not comprehend to save not just the US but the entire world and they mocked him. He died at 32 in 1955. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. I don't think I've heard Johnny Cash sing with more passion or anger. Ira Hayes and ALL veterans, not just in the US do not get the support, gratefulness, or respect that they so deserve for what they did/do.

So many American Indians were overlooked for their patriotism. What a shame! There is a possibility that the war would have been different if not for the Navajo and Comanche code talkers. I had the priviledge to meet Comanche Chief Charles Chibitty who was a code talker in the European theater. He was a remarkable man. Very interesting how they created the codes they used to confuse the enemy. I salute them!

True story about a man that sadly is unknown to far too many. There is an iconic photo of six U.S. Marines planting the American Flag at Iwo Jima. One of the men who planted that flag was indeed Ira Hayes.

A little tidbit ... the backup singers were the Carter sisters and their mother. One of those sisters was June Carter Cash ... Johnny's wife. They did a lot of backup singing for him. Sadly, Johnny died just a few months after June did. Some say he died of a broken heart. He couldn't live without his June. May they all RIP.

You can see the story in Clint Eastwood's "Flags of Our Fathers". The story follows the lives of the Marines who raised the flag atop Iwo Jima.

Had not ever heard this song before. Listened to it because I knew who Ira Hayes was, thanks to the movie that Tony Curtis was in where he played Ira Hayes a medal of honor winner. Great song and Reaction.

Johnny is a distant cousin of mine. His voice is one in a million. This song is so sad. The American Indians were treated so bad and in my opinion still are. RIP IN PEACE JOHNNY AND IRA HAYES

A lot of them served in the Pacific theater. Navajo was the basis of a makeshift code because who in Japan spoke that language? Trying to crack it like a typical military code was not going to work.

I have been to a number of Pow Wows and a few Potlachs. In the southwest in particular veterans wear their uniforms to these events with pride. The other side my very good friend who is a jail guard( also a veteran) has told me many times how appalling it is with how many veterans that are coming through his jail.

Indians were the real heroes of WWll because of the code talkers. The enemy could not translate any information of America because we has code talkers in every battalion of the army.😊

Ira Hayes was a victim of PTSD. That is why he drank. He was from the O’Odham people. He barely excaped death and unknown to many at the time of the war, most of those men who raised that flag in the famous photo were KIA. They predicted 3 to 5 days to take Iwo Jima . . . it took well over a month.

Pretty sure it was not PTSD, Survivor's Guilt especially since he got to get out of the fighting by pure chance while his buddies were still over there trying to bring it to an end.

The song you should listen to with this one is "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" solo by the author. Perhaps the best anti-war song ever.
