In December 1963 at The Dream Bowl in Vallejo California Johnny played this song from his new album we were the audience to hear it.

There is a statue of John Henry in Talcott Wv where the competition supposedly took place, at the big bend tunnel

Not the only song that pays homage to John Henry. Good song.

I love Johnny Cash and I certainly have heard about John Henry, but I don't remember this song. It was as good as I expect Johnny's music to be.

My favorite version of this is the one he did on the Live At Folsom Prison album.

Same here. I should’ve specified. I had never heard the version he chose.

Hey Don, you need to react to Tom T. Hall's "More About John Henry"

Thanks randallking for our morning selection. This to me had the same rhythm and cadence of some of his train songs. Johnny wrote this himself although June and JR helped. Johnny released this in 1963. You asked who thinks of this. The answer is, anybody who picks up a book on American folklore. For me I like story songs about Folklore because they put well known stories to music. Although good, it was not 9.5 good as your have to be in the mood to hear stories or your telling Alexa to "Skip song" or you're changing the station.

The real John Henry was supposedly like 6'8 and 280 pounds. However, the only record that they could find of a John Henry who worked on the railroad in West Virginia around that time was a Black man who was more like 5"6" and 215. Something like that anyway. In any case, they must have been a powerhouse.
