Balk Rules 1) You can't just be up there and just doin' a balk like that. 1a. A balk is when you 1b. Okay well listen. A balk is when you balk the 1c. Let me start over 1c-a. The pitcher is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, batter, that prohibits the batter from doing, you know, just trying to hit the ball. You can't do that. 1c-b. Once the pitcher is in the stretch, he can't be over here and say to the runner, like, "I'm gonna get ya! I'm gonna tag you out! You better watch your butt!" and then just be like he didn't even do that. 1c-b(1). Like, if you're about to pitch and then don't pitch, you have to still pitch. You cannot not pitch. Does that make any sense? 1c-b(2). You gotta be, throwing motion of the ball, and then, until you just throw it. 1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have the ball up here, like this, but then there's the balk you gotta think about. 1c-b(2)-b. Fairuza Balk hasn't been in any movies in forever. I hope she wasn't typecast as that racist lady in American History X. 1c-b(2)-b(i). Oh wait, she was in The Waterboy too! That would be even worse. 1c-b(2)-b(ii). A balk is when the pitcher makes a movement that, as determined by, when you do a move involving the baseball and field of 2) Do not do a balk please.

He's good at it. His left leg is moving first every time, but it's in such a quick succession that it's not noticeable unless you're looking right at it, and umpires aren't looking at the left leg often. He gets called for a balk more often than any other pitcher I've seen.

It's like how offensive linemen hold on almost every play, but usually get away with it cause they make it subtle enough where the refs can't see it. He probably balks every time, and you would be able to see it if it was in slow mo, but it is so slight that the umpire can't call it. Balk moves are pretty much the status quo for right-handed pitchers, and are taught at the higher levels of highschool ball a and really aren't that big of a deal.

Okay, I'll get it straight for y'all. Cueto's move IS a balk, as according to the official MLB rules, cause his left knee slightly bends first. However, it is so subtle that the umps can't see it clearly, so he doesn't get called for it much. Most good pickoffs moves do have a slight movement that could make it be a balk, but umps do not have a good enough view to call it every time.

:55 Watch his left foot, it's so subtle but just enough to get the guy to freeze or start his secondary. Watch it in slow-mo and you get a really good look. It's definitely a balk but almost impossible to see it. Just part of Cueto's genius! Easily most exciting pitcher to watch (on TV)!

there are multiple ways to balk but usually a balk is any move a pitcher may make that can be intentionally or unintentionally performed that may deceive a baserunner in any way.

Freddy Paulino yes faking a throw to any base (but second base when there is a runner on second base, yes I know it's a bit confusing) is a balk. plus a lot of other small things. like moving any part of your body but your head after you have pulled your leg closer to your body is a balk unless you are attempting a pitch or a legal pickoff. Or throwing to first without taking your foot that is touching the pitching rubber off of the rubber before you throw is a balk as well. there are even more ways but those are a few.
