Hollywood actor Johnny Depp, U2 frontman Bono and Bob Geldof are amongst friends and family of 'The Pogues' frontman Shane Macgowan's funeral in Tipperary, Ireland.
The singer-songwriter passed away follwing a recent hospital stay after being diagnosed with encephalitis at the age of 65.

I’m from near Birmingham and a Catholic. There’s always been a big population of Irish in the West Midlands and they were largely welcomed. The Irish formed a big part of our congregation and our schools. I had many friends of Irish decent at school and my own maternal grandfather’s grandparents came over from Ireland.

In all honesty, I'm glad people know Fairytale of New York but, my goodness his writing is so very much more than that one song. Here in Canada when the first Pogues releases came out I heard them at nearly every door and in every pub all that first year and beyond that. He was a huge talent and song writing kudos from the likes of Tom Waits is no small change friends. Not at all. Good bye Shane and thank you for all the joy you gave us.

Yes there's loads of musicians who have made a career mainly in Ireland singing Irish music same with Damian Dempsey he tours in Britain but isn't well known unless your a fan of Irish music some don't like it cause they make it political jm English but like all music including Irish even some rebel songs I like cause I don't let religion or politics spoil a good song music to me is more important than religion and politics. My Grandmother Kathleen Kelly was Irish but grew up here in Liverpool which is mainly Irish but she christened my Dad Catholic but his sister protestant which I am but don't care either way. He spent most of his life in England so that's his accent but he lived for Irish music which is sang with Irish accent and wouldn't sound authentic without it. I'm English from Liverpool but I sing with a total America accent cause I love American music and all my hero's are American. When the Beatles sang Elvis or Chuck Berry they don't have Liverpool accent or get back or back in the USSR, but they did in yellow submarine. If I sang Johnny Cash with Liverpool accent would sound stupid the only time I sound Liverpool when I sing is if I sing Irish songs cause our accent is similar. Graham Nash is from Manchester but you can't tell in CSNY songs.

It was Four O' Clock in the Morning on a Rainy Night in Soho. He Was a Man You Don't Meet Everyday and He Had a Pair of Brown Eyes . He lived in Dirty Old Town by The Old Main Drag. His London Girl was The Sun and Moon to him and he always told her I Will Love You 'till The End. He was a Navigator and it was the Hour When The Ship Comes In. Being The Gentleman Soldier he had her Sit Down By The Fire and drink The Parting Glass before he sang her Lullaby Of London. As he Waltzed His Matilda down the gangway, The Irish Rover turned and said If I Should Fall From Grace With God have me cremated and scatter my ashes on The Rocky Road To Dublin . That's how I would like to see it. My condolences to his bride and family. He was a great artist and I am saddened by his passing. Love ya Shane, thanks for the fun.

Ken Murray was talking bollocks - it was never difficult to be Irish in the north of England - London may have been anti Irish but still they thrived until this day - the Tavern, in Cricklewood Road has a newsagent next door which has every Irish local newspaper the same day it comes out and, if you're what people call black, you're at least half Irish. Through a friend of mine, PJ Finn, I met Adrian Ennis who had The Red House pub on Whitechapel Road just down from the Blind Beggar - a great character. And even though IRA bombs were going off in London at that time I was treated very well by the English people that I encountered. Which surprised me.
