Clinical psychologist here. I've done hundreds of C&P evaluations with veterans (non-forensic). First off, Hughes is an embarrassment to the profession, while Curry is a gem - she was fantastic. Second, Hughes thought she could give a bunch of clinical assessments for a forensic setting (other than maybe the PAI), while Curry used THE gold standard MMPI-2. Third, Hughes did not complete the CAPS-5 correctly, so it is invalid. (The PCL-5 is a joke for a forensic setting, especially with a pathological liar.) The first question in the CAPS-5 is VERY specific about index trauma, which means you have to clearly state the event that caused the trauma (e.g., a combat veteran who was shot in the leg during an ambush; sexual assault on X date; learned about your child being killed in a drive-by; etc.). "Complex trauma" is not exactly a thing (not in the DSM-5-TR), and usually refers to childhood trauma over a long period of time. Currently though, PTSD is related to one index event. Lastly, Hughes was correct about Curry overstating how debilitating PTSD is. PTSD exists on a spectrum, so somebody can still meet criteria and function very well. That is why in the VA we have a rating system for compensation (0/10/30/50/70/100%). Borderline Personality Disorder is usually associated with past trauma, so it's plausible that Amber does have a history of trauma. That is why it was so egregious to not specify the index trauma in the CAPS-5. Hughes disgusts me, for multiple reasons...

@@solea4945 And that's acting as if the concept of nuance doesn't exist. It is amazing how many people this case is offending. I am slighted as someone who has a ptsd diagnosis when I separated the military. I went through 4 different antidepressant medications, gained 100lbs from the meds and lack of interest in trying, constantly contemplating life and asking my subconscious why, distrusting everyone and losing all of my friends (still dont feel like I need friends, and still dont trust anyone except my wife and son), and I contact my parent/sister/family MAYBE once a year sometimes less. Thanks to trying different med combinations I have found a combo that allows me to function better than I have the last 4 year. I would not even be able to write this if I was without my care This doctor doesn't deserve her license imo, and needs to be extensively evaluated before being allowed to practice Psychology. Actual severe depression and PTSD is very much disabling. Edit: I also want to add that it took 3 years of weekly therapy sessions before my psychiatrist gave me a PTSD diagnosis . The diagnosis changed several times throughout the three years from depressive disorder, to major depression with anxiety then to PTSD. My doctor eliminated any other possibilities before giving it the PTSD diagnosis.

I’ve been diagnosed with c-ptsd and I totally agree with the symptoms your talking about as Trauma I suffered was so severe I lost all hope in my heart and basically shut down and the repeated trauma thoughts over and over again for years which I had no control over it and it was completely debilitating to say the least . I haven’t been able to hold a regular full time job in years since experiencing this intense trauma .. which I used to socialize and be around social scenes and now I isolate cause I feel safe.. The trauma I experienced was due to 7 year smear campaign on me by my ex-husband along with him using our kids as pawns to cause harm to my life by projecting his abusive behaviors towards me and our kids onto me making me the abuser and it ruined my life as I was so severely paralyzed with anxiety and mental and emotional dealing with the betrayal of close friends and family and others in our town believing this smear campaign and not ever seeing anything with their own eyes so the smear campaign turned into disgusting gossip throughout the town and it was so hurtful and along with this I was in mental pain cause my ex lied about his actions to our children and he also made our kids lie about me to further the belief of his smearing .. so I suffered so much as my kids didn’t ever deserve this and it is not right . My ex was out to ruin my life for me leaving him due to mental emotional financial and sexual abuse .. a decade of my life was so painful . I believe Johnny was set up my Amber and she’s a liar clearly . Sickening these evil people ..

I was a military police detective for 20 years (well, we weren't called detectives, but you get the point) and dealt with the recording of expert evidence for the purpose of production at court on many, many occasions. I'll say just this: the fact that this doctor *KNEW* that the material recorded during her consultations with AH would be produced for this trial is a travesty in terms of her trying to explain away the "88 pages of notes." Why? Because of one factor: the opposing counsel will simply bring up your slovenly attitude towards filling in official forms and reports. And wouldn't you know it - the psychologist was humiliated on two separate occasions for this exact reason. All it does is demonstrate a blasé attitude to the task at hand. She may well have 88 pages of notes, but it means sweet FA when the opposing counsel is berating you on the stand for not doing something as simple as filling in a box with a number. Some may question, 'why even have the box at all, then?!' As a specialist interviewer myself, I interviewed child and adult victims of rape, sexual assault and serious physical assaults; the fact that I recorded pages and pages of notes was a good thing - but they were my reference when compiling relevant reports. Yes, those notes were admitted as 'unused material' when the evidence bundles were forwarded to the prosecution, but the notes weren't the things being examined at court - the video recordings were, or the report was. For this psychologist to turn around and say, 'yes, but my 88 pages of notes blah, blah, blah' means absolutely nothing. What is being looked at/questioned? Yes, that's right - the report itself. So, to try and argue the toss that relevant points were scored for a diagnosis - where the notes are scribbled all over the form like a small child with a crayon, is shocking for an 'expert' charging $1000 per hour. Indeed, the time frames used in the examinations are relevant; you brought up the best example to prove this, when you discussed the origin of the PTSD and how the shrink fitted that into the alleged IPV complaint. It doesn't fit - it would never work. The best defence AH had, which would have worked, would have been to say, "I was violent towards Johnny because PTSD made me do it - the PTSD that was caused by my father abusing me as a child... ...ergo, it's not really my fault blah, blah, blah." Instead, AH, with the help of this shrink, purported that her mental suffering was caused as a result of the alleged IPV. Your subsequent point is correct - how does she know she suffers from PTSD from the alleged IPV involving Johnny, when she suffered at the hands of her father as a child?

I wish that they could bring in a neutral expert in psychiatric testing. One problem with abusive & manipulative people is that they manipulate both the professionals conducting the tests as well as the tests themselves. Occasionally they lie to themselves as well. My ex was evaluated on 4 occasions within 12 months by 3 psychologists and each time he had a completely different personality. One psychologist concluded that he was the victim not the abuser, even though he was being given free anger management help by the DV shelter. Another concluded that he wasn't intelligent enough to lie or deceive psychologists. Yet another concluded that he wasn't aware, had amnesia etc. Finally they said we can't help him because we can't find out which personality is the true person and which is fabricated. Different tests results even completely opposing results do not prove one expert to by incompetent. It proves that the subject being tested is smart enough to understanding the purpose of each question then give answers that we lead to the outcome they choose. I'm not saying that's she educated, just a practiced manipulator.

@afelias2 жыл бұрын
Dr. Curry's testimony prior showed that the test methodology accounts for this. There are deliberate questions placed there that would assume that your PTSD is so extreme that it's unbelievable. If you answer positively to too many of those questions, you're likely not to have PTSD, but are feigning or exaggerating. (Which doesn't mean you're necessarily a liar - it can mean that you don't have a grasp of reality which is a completely different problem, or that you were kinda psyche-ing yourself out on something and exaggerating.) That's also why further interviews (which are also in that manual) are recommended. Dr. Curry said she would have done further testing, herself, but Amber was uncooperative and she had a time limit. Amber Heard tripped all the false positives. The test clearly shows she's feigning/exaggerating. It's her expert, Dr. Hughes, who is misrepresenting the test results.

I came from the Nick Rekieta stream, someone there said "I am an actual war veteran and I've been diagnosed with PTSD, and even I didn't score as high as Amber did." Dr. Curry showed that Amber scored so high on the PTSD tests that it was suspicious, and she tripped all the "false positive" questions that were so ludicrous that they were designed to detect people faking PTSD. There's a reason certain tests are called "standardised": they are meant to be administered in the same, STANDARD way, each time they are administered, whether among DV victims or burglars or aged care residents. Some of these administrations may well be accompanied by notes bearing a number linking them to the test: the notes do NOT substitute for the standardisation of the test, they supplement it. As to PTSD and level of functioning, one needs to factor in what was "normal" prior to the event: a high functioning individual before the trigger occurence/s, whose PTSD causes 15% loss of function, is still above the average after the trigger. They are unlikely to become babbling idiots.

@@sp00kyd4ddy6 its a matter of what's useful in forensic evidence vs clinical use. In forensic evidence the last thing you want to probably do, is offer a list of the symptoms to a defendant, right before/as they are talking about their claims.

One thing that I've learned about these so called "experts", is that they are either going to lose their jobs or lose a lot of patients/clients. I'm happy that this trial is televised not only for Johnny but to show how incompetent our justice system is. Furthermore, it'll take other people who a pursuing certain careers more seriously so they end up becoming true professionals and "experts."

I've filled enough of depression tests to know that if you want to mislead the administering psychologist the test gives you clear instructions how. These tests are exactly as efficient as you want meaning that if you actually have a problem you want to fix they help in giving information that helps forming the basis of therapy but if you want to make the situation seem more or less serious as it is then your therapist is completely at your mercy especially if they are predisposed to believe you.
@dll76582 жыл бұрын
exactly. That's why tests with controls are necessary in cases like these where the person is predisposed to present themselves in a way that would be beneficial to them in court. But the fool of course did not

These type of doctors have this savior complex to the point where it becomes seriously toxic. She's probably seen plenty of women more than men and then took it upon herself ignoring the data that more women are likely to tell people about abuse than men, while men receive more on average , to "save" women more than men. When you spend all this time and money in a career only to end up becoming nothing better than a activist on the street with a sign is just laughably sad. With that said not all doctors are like this woman, just thankfully she getting fucking exposed.
@MrRavellon2 жыл бұрын
That happens. However I do not believe that's the case with her. I genuinely believe she's just a bad person and driven by malice more than compassion. She does not care about the women. She just hates men.

@notan31442 жыл бұрын
Unless I'm missing a stat I don't think you can say outright that men receive more abuse. You can say that men are less likely to report abuse than women because of stigma therefore the numbers are deflated. Also from a utilitarian biological perspective: on average when a woman exerts herself to the same level as a man she's going to do less damage, so the man may perceive that as an issue not worth reporting because he thinks he can handle it regardless of the fact that it's abusive behaviour. Whereas if a man exerts himself to that same level it could seriously hurt the woman leading to hospitalisation and a report being made. Exertion level is a product of intent, so if both are equally exerting themselves then they are equally as abusive psychologically, the physiological outcome is just different.

@@notan3144 Interesting comment, friend. Couple of notes: every NCVS, the largest such survey in the world, shows women are by far the primary instigators of violence in relationships. In addition, of the 12% of couples where only one partner is violent, in 8.4% it is the woman, and in only 3.6% it's the man. And while, unsurprisingly, more women than men are killed due to DV, men are slightly more likely (55 to 45%) to be seriously injured thanks to women's more frequent resort to weapons. As an aside, women's violence is particularly evident and prevalent when their victims are smaller. More prevalent, more injurious, and more deadly. For example, every annual DHHS Child Maltreatment Report ever published shows mothers acting alone are, by far, the primary abusers of children--not to mention how well understood it is that of all the pairings violence is most common by far in les(ian domestic partnerships. For se(ual violence perpetrated by women see feminist icon Hanna Rosin's 2014 article "When Men Are R___... Women Are Often the Perpetrators" and Lara Stemple's supporting research in Scientific American from 2017. (It's too bad yt doesn't allow direct links.) Cheers,

She’s actually contradicted her own testimony - AND she has back-tracked in this testimony. The jury (if they’re worth their salt) are either confused or have realised that she has contradicted herself. Maybe that’s what the defence team wants. However, compare this testimony with what Amber bleated out in her final testimony and it is plain to see that this shrink and Amber’s bollocks don’t add up anyway. PS, she DID use checklists as tests in her original testimony - I know, having undergone the tests and checklists for PTSD myself.

A lawtuber called Emily D. Baker has been streaming the trial, and after the testimonies on this day, spoke with Runkle of the Bailey, who was actually in the courtroom watching the jury (guy in the blue suit with long white hair; at the start of the video, you can see him if you look past Elaine's shoulder). Apparently, the jury didn't seem very convinced by Hughes or by Amber's sob story.

As someone diagnosed with C-PTSD and went through years of therapy for it, the scale assessments were what I was asked to fill out before each visit, because it provided my therapist with kind of a mood thermometer for the period of time between my visits. It was NOT used as a diagnostic tool, just as an on going mood measurement that allowed her to track my progress over time.

And everyone knows doctors are never wrong or make mistakes. Good thing there's no such thing as malpractice or getting a second opinion.
@advertiserunfriendly2 жыл бұрын
Let's say hypothetically amber heard wanted to go to a different psychologist, the fact is that her new psychologist would ask for copies of these standardized forms for medical history reasons. the fact that she did not properly fill out all fields is really bad and is borderline malpractice. These forms are extremely critical in helping clients for diagnosis and treatment reasons, and should be filled in regardless. She would have saved herself if she even just put in "N/A" or a brief summary or anything, but as we can all clearly see she failed to do her due diligence as a medical professional, and is unironically extremely unprofessional. Her excuse that this form is solely for "research" is absolutely asinine and not true in the slightest.

Wow, first when defending what she does, she tells that you need to just follow the manual: 6:34 But when she need to fill up standard tests she doesn't, she writes her aswers in other pages away from the stardard... Her notes are more important than standards.
