The reason Johnny Depp and the rest of the Pirates of the Carribean cast would want to film in Australia is to take advantage of our pristine waters, our beautiful rainforests in Queensland and our natural and untouched environment. It's in this beautiful condition for a reason. The government tries very hard to protect our environment from foreign and introduced diseases and we're still working on problems bought over by Dutch and European ships hundreds of years ago. Not saying that Johnny Depp's domesticated dogs pose a specific risk to Australia, but he should be no exception to following the law. Just like anyone else who brings an animal into Australia it needs a permit and to have the required health checks, as Johnny Depp said himself "he thought he had the permits done". So he recognizes this is a requirement upon entry. Sounds like someone made an error and now wants to blame the government for ever having the law in the first place. EVERY OTHER PERSON HAS MANAGED TO HAVE A PERMIT, WHY CAN'T YOU?!? Not a single Australian has every complained about having to get a permit nor any other celebrity to has had to get a permit to bring their little pooch into the country. You come to our country to film the coastline and rainforest... It's pretty simple, protect what you enjoy Johnny Depp.

It's called showcasing the environment, filming the environment is visual stimulation to the audience and a form of education. It's like when people see the rolling hills and vast greenery in Lord of the Rings and they see how beautiful New Zealand is and they understand why protecting the environment is important. It's important to remember, if you go into the wild and you want to film "nature" you are a guest, it is a privilege and you need to respect it. Johnny Depp can stay in the country whose laws he likes and his pets can do whatever they want without any health permits/checks. When the legendary Steve Irwin or David Attenborough filmed in Africa, in South America they did their best to minimize their disturbance to the environment, they're in their field because they care about the environment. David won a scholarship to study natural sciences at Cambridge University and Steve runs a Zoo and actively advocates animal protection in Australia. Filming is not equal to exploiting. "Exploiting" it would be if we accepted money and allowed the film crew to spill oil in our bays, to chop down trees and stab our wildlife dead. Australia has very strict 'quarantine laws' for a REASON. We don't have RABIES, pest & other diseases prevalent in the U.S. & other counties. We have every right to PROTECT our native wildlife & ecosystem. Depp deliberately smuggled his two dogs in on his private jet then falsified his entry documentation stating he had nothing to declare. While here Amber took the dogs to a dog grooming salon which was beyond foolish & arrogant as they could have easily spread diseases to other dogs. They breached the 'quarantine act' which carries up to a 10 year jail term & a heavy fine. When found out Depp was given 72 hrs to fly his dogs back to the U.S. euthanizing the dogs would have been a last case scenario so he got off lightly.

I had to put my dogs in quarantine and go through a lengthy process of tests before even arriving in Australia. That is the established rules of the country. There is no Rabies, Leptospirosis, etc in the country. Why should Johnny Depp just be allowed to bring his dogs into the country illegally? If his dogs played with another local dog, and had a slight fight as dogs might do, something could be passed over. Australia admittedly has severe import laws, but you need to respect those laws, especially as a visitor.

I think he was wrong to threaten to euthanise them however what Australia did was completely rational. Because Australia is an island, it means that we have don't have diseases (etc) like rabies. If we didn't have this quarantine laws then animals could be brought in and bring that pathogen with them. As an Australian, I believe both parties are at fault. Johnny and Amber should have made sure that the dogs were cleared before entering the country, because if you don't they do have the potential to spread diseases it's just precaution. But our agriculture minister shouldn't have threatened to have the dogs killed if he didn't take them back, he should told them to fill out the paper work, put them through quarantine and if the dogs have had regular vaccinations and cleans, they would have had them back within a couple of days and maybe get slapped with a fine, that's it. Barnaby Joyce is a twat, but Johnny Depp should not take something as important as customs and quarantine as a joke, it stops outbreaks from happening.

They left out THE most important part of Barnaby's news conference, which was the two dogs could cause a lot of harm to the local fauna by carrying foreign diseases and if not properly brought into the country, along with a quarantine, it could endanger their ecosystem and potentially lead to millions or even billions of dollars worth of losses. Alright Jimmy, here's the thing. He IS just doing his job, protecting all of us Australians from foreign diseases. We don't have rabies here and it doesn't matter that Johnny is famous. Him being famous doesn't prevent his dogs from contaminating other dogs unknowingly. They could have just been carriers for other harmful things. Sure we have a lot of dangerous animals here but we know how to deal with them because we're used to it. They're natural and we know how to treat injuries caused by them.
