@@linngal5 I don’t think it’s about attractiveness, just that the actor really fit the part here with Johnny. Edward’s receptivity and innocence I don’t think would have fit the Tom Cruise intensity. Johnny was nuanced and his personality allowed you to read into the character. Plus, his eyes told the story.

See in my head the film was a version of beauty and the beast. He's the stranger, nobody takes the time to really try to know the inner person. In this version there's not much to change, or make a Prince, because inside he is an understanding and caring guy-his personality, vulnerability, wanting to be of use, (pruning the trees), they are the qualities that make someone lovable. A real life Prince CHARMING. With substance underneath, and not trying to convince the world that he had scissors for hands AH, but that in the fairy tale, or STORY, (can someone ask her how much difference there is to playing a naked billboard?) Depp always adds so much depth to his characters-even if it's a depth of humour, or silliness (Captain Jack Sparrow) or serious, (Transcendance), or strange and silly in the right amounts at times as Willy Wonka. NOT one that the famed Dr Speigal (Smeagol) decided to base his speech and cognitive processing on. I mean even down to his earliest works, like Nightmare on Elm Street, or yeah 21 Jump Street-so what if they were "teen heart throb" roles. You need money to pay rent, bills for food. He is diverse with his roles. Tom Cruise-with one 2 exceptions, both creepy but "Collateral", was a deeper and good role. All of the others are playing a handsome, rebel but WITH A CAUSE, with a surprising amount of scenes in a male half naked setting ( locker rooms in Top Gun, or another guy in the car), goes "against the rules", but wins in the end maniacally laughing, and gets the girl...for kissing and then fade to black. Doesn't appear to require much acting really IMHO.

It would’ve been mental, I don’t think he’d have to act much as the character was a maligned outsider. What made Johnny Depp’s casting a genius casting was that he was known as a heartthrob prior to the role. Once the pale make up, crazy hair and costume was added it showed that there was more to him. Although, I thought he looked amazing as Edward.

Funny thing's that Depp was the author's choice to play Lestat in Interview with the Vampire, but Cruise was cast for his box office. Tom was pretty good in that although Depp from that era as Lestat would have been a treat. Main thing about Depp is that he did roles that uniquely suited him. He cannot be an action hero like Tom or a leading man like Pitt or DiCaprio, likewise his roles wouldn't be the same with other actors because Depp often personalized them. So Depp is right in saying Tom would have been good but it would have been an entirely different movie, and Tim Burton wouldn't have been happy.
